RV in the UK - Eurotunnel and another vehicle encounter August 2019

Фильм және анимация

Folkstone, UK, Eurotunnel. What started out as a video for folks wondering if you can take an RV on Eurotunnel turned into something completely different 😳
Decided to edit it and share for those fearing having a bigger motorhome and encountering British country roads and ....erm .... other big vehicles!
Happy RV travels folks, wherever you are!

Very helpful video thanks. I'm new to the American RV on UK roads thing and have been struggling, but it's getting better. Our roads are simply outdated and too narrow.

Wife and I just watched this as new RV owners and currently doing our licences. Great video, thank you for sharing. You're learning points are excellent and your approach to the challenges are a credit to you.

As an Artic driver in the UK I sympathise. Might help you to know that white road signs are "non main roads" when I am in my wagon, I will only take roads with green or blue signs, avoid the white signs like the plague. Nicely handled though, I know the stress of squeezing a big ass beast down some English B roads

Rory, that’s an interesting bit of info. I did my class C licence a couple of years ago and it wasn’t taught on the road and wasn’t part of the theory test. That seems like a pretty basic element of learning to drive a bigger vehicle. Perhaps that’s because it was a fundamental part of my car test in 1984? 🤷‍♂️ I accept it’s almost certainly in the Highway Code so the responsibility is mine. However, it should still be a more prevalent fact for all road users though in my humble opinion. Thanks for pointing this out in a civil manner. I just learnt something!

@@CarriageReturn it is not to my knowledge in the highway code and I spent years as a driver before anyone told me! Once I knew it made sense, but I had no idea for the longest time. That I why I thought I should try to share the love a bit, hopefully help someone as it helped me.

Rory, interesting that such a great bit of advice isn’t more widely broadcast! Thanks again for the info. I’ve been looking at signs even in my car since your advice and it makes total sense!

Nothing wrong with your driving there :). I have a 35ft Damon Challenger (wide bodied) and had a similar situation on the way to British F1 this year. My mate is a heavy recovery lorry driver and even he does not like driving LHD heavy vehicles on British roads. One problem is that if it gets tight you are able to see how near the edge you are but it is difficult to judge how close your offside front corner is to the approaching vehicle. Petrol stations are also fun especially when you run on LPG.

Paul, yeah. I really don't miss the LPG juggle. Reversing out of petrol stations is never fun! I'm diesel pusher now. HGV pump. Fast delivery of £300.00 of diesel then 600 miles of grins!

@@rich7447 Its a Cummins ISB300 5.9 6 cylinder diesel. Runs on diesel only. My previous was a V10 Triton ford 6.8ltr and was adapted to run on LPG here in the UK. But yes, you can run a diesel on LPG. Someone always disagrees but ...erm.... you can't!

@@CarriageReturn Now that I re-read my comment it does look like I was commenting on LPG on your current rig, but I really meant that I am surprised that any class A is LPG powered. Gasoline powered class A coaches are usually underpowered to start with so running LPG would make that worse. You were smart to swap the Triton out for a Cummins. Cummins make a lot of nice L6 engines. My daily driver is the emissions controlled 6.7L version of your 5.9 ISB, while my class A has the slightly larger M11 450. I prefer the M11 since it has no emission controls and a lot more power (650 lb ft vs 1,450 lb ft).

@@CarriageReturn How much diesel does 300 gbp get you? My 42 foot bus only needs about 65 gallons for 600 miles and that would only cost me $145 usd/100 gbp on my fleet card ($2.20 usd per gallon). 300 gbp/$400 usd would get me a long way towards a full tank (200 gallon).

Great job! Last year we rode National Coach through the English country side so we saw some of those roads first hand. I have a bit of a reputation of being willing to drive our coach almost anywhere, but I don't think I'd enjoy miles of those narrow roads! My wife chalks that up to my having driven fire trucks, which I have often told her that when you're driving to a fire you have to get the apparatus wherever it needs to be; and, get there safely. That's what's expected. Thank you for sharing. HwyLife

Nice job. It's good that were only running a mid-size class A. If you plan on doing many trips in a coach that size I would suggest investing in a trucker's GPS since they let you input your vehicle type and dimensions and then limit navigation to roads that are suitable for your vehicle. I have the Garmin 760LMT in my 42' Monaco and it has saved me a lot of headaches.

I’m running Co-Pilot Truck Rich. The route isn’t actually prohibited amd had no weight height restrictions. It was more lack of local knowledge and planning that let me down. As mentioned before, the colour of the road signs is crucial.

if you still have the RV I'd suggest investing in a Garmin satnav, I think they are quite deer at 200 or maybe more since we got ours on discount. We had one in our motor home and you can put in the size of your vehicle and it wont take you down roads you can't fit in.

Charles, the iPad on the left of me is running CoPilot truck which does the same. The route wasn't actually restricted (hence why there's a double decker bus on it! ) so it wasn't an incorrect choice to go that way, just an ill-thought out one! As others have said, the colour of the roadsigns is the key to the suitability.
