Thanks for addressing multiple 12v LA batteries in parallel. Most RV dealers are equipping the larger TH with these because they are cheaper and have generators attached for charging out while dry camping. I have a bank of four 12v that last a long time and charge up quite quickly. Great info!

Thank you Jared. I love my BattleBorn batteries. Yes, lithium batteries are expensive, but unless you know you’re only going to use your batteries for a short time, lithiums will be less expensive in the long run. (And they’re lighter weight.)

The main thing to consider with any of these batteries is to get some form of battery monitoring system. Jared has done other videos on meters, look them up. Take some advice from me, I should have known better and went out dry camping for the first time and ran my batteries dead. I thought I could charge them with the converter running the generator for an hour or plug into the trucks 7 way plug and charge. It doesn't work. I was using the level gauge idiot lights on my RV control panel, they are not a good way to keep track of your voltage level. You can also use a good portable DC clamp style meter to avoid the installation hurdle.

I bought multiple BBs and saved a bunch. Also get 15% off cabling and all accessories. I think it's a better battery, IMO.

We have a couple trips coming up where we may have an over night stay in a CB or similar. We really only need some minimal lighting and possibly the heater fan depending on temps. I assume going with 2 of the 6V golf cart batteries will be fine. We typically stay with power hookups.

I run lights & motor with 12v ,but have 2 big 6v that (when combined) run like 1big 12v to run 12v interior electrical

We typically boondock on weekends a few times per year. I bring my Predator 3500 Inverter generator and don't let my original RV / Marine lead-acid batteries get below 25% discharged. I'm happy with my OEM 3-stage converter-charger. I like the improved battery technologies, but I can't justify the cost in upgrading for the amount of time we use our small travel trailer. Wait till the graphene technology comes out. Game changer. The reason I want RV graphene systems is because RV realities and life is the best testing laboratory that will uncover any flaw because in an RV almost any contingency is possible and usually happens.

We are upgrading to dual Lion Energy UT1300's as Costco did a 'special buy' on them and the converter/charger in our new rig has a selector switch for either lead acid or lithium. That should make install easier; although, I want to install the batteries under the bed so I'll have to do some rewiring. Eventually, the idea will be to add a Multiplus II to the system so that we can go off-grid more effectively when traveling longer distances and, possibly, some dry camping. Your information has been well presented and extremely helpful in our decision making. Have a fantastic Christmas.

Herb what are you powering? A van? Motorhome?

I'm currently running dual Trojan T-105 6v GC2 (golf cart) batteries rated at 225 Ah, weighing 124 lbs total. They do OK, but after two years they just aren't keeping up with how I want to camp. Walking around my RV with a headlamp on to preserve the house batteries gets old real fast. Even with all LED lights and solar, the golf cart batteries aren't enough. Plus, the monthly maintenance is getting old. Every month I check the electrolyte levels and add distilled water as needed. Once a year I check the specific gravity of each cell using an hydrometer. If you use the golf cart batteries, consider buying from a golf cart retailer. I bought my T-105 batteries at a golf cart store for a price that was far less than I could find online or from other "normal" battery sources. My plan is to construct my own LiFePo4 battery bank out of eight 280 Ah cells in a 2p4s configuration. This will give me 560 net amp hours at a cost of about $1100 and weight of 92 lbs. There will be additional cost for a BMS (Battery Management System) but that won't exceed $150. With all that, I end up with a battery bank that is smaller, lighter and far less expensive than the equivalent amp hours of BattleBorn. Once I get the battery bank in place, I'll start upgrading the solar system to provide more juice. The biggest downside of the new LiFePo4 battery bank (besides cost) is that I need to relocate them inside the trailer. This will entail significant rewiring. However, since I considered the existing wiring to be undersized, this presents an opportunity to make an improvement.

Hello I don't know if you're aware of this or not but there is another KZreadr called Ray and name of his channel is called love your RV. Com and he has some of these Lion energy lithium batteries and he did a test on one in a freezer he actually got them down below freezing they must be pretty strong to be able to do that so they are good battery

Thanks for the quality videos. I have two 6 volt lead-acid batteries with a 1000 watt inverter in my truck camper. I'm trying to decide what size generator I need to charge them while boondocking, 2000 or 1000 watt? I can't do solar cuz I live in a state where we don't get much sun and I camp in the winter. I don't see why more people don't build their own LiFePo-4 batteries from readily available and affordable prismatic cells. Lion Energy uses 4, 100ah prismatic cells in their Safari 1300s. We just ditched the 2 FLA golf cart batteries that we wore out over the last 4 years (as we boondock a lot) and replaced them with a custom built 560ah 12v battery made from 8, 280ah prismatic cells. The grade "A" cells we chose have a 6,000-cycle mfg. projected life at 100% DOD. This means that if we cycled them 100% every single day, 365 days a year, they would last over 16 years! The main reason we went with these cells (other than their price and quality) is that they fit perfectly under the steps of our motorhome where our old pair of GC-2 golf cart batteries used to reside, saving 35lbs while having over 5 times the energy storage capacity. To eliminate the cold weather charging issue that you mentioned, we insulated the battery compartment, cut a small 1" hole in our step risers and installed a tiny computer CPU fan to keep this space at close to room temperature. The fan is mounted so it blows over our 5a active balancer to keep this component cool and healthy, prolonging its life. Our battery has about the capacity of 2, 270ah Battleborn Gamechangers, a pair of which will set you back over $4,700 these days, yet our equivalent capacity custom built battery only cost us $1,500 to assemble, complete with a 330A Heltec BMS (with a 1,200a surge for starting our generator) and a 5a active balancer. Plus, it fits under our steps, while we couldn't fit more than 200ah under there using prebuilt lithium batteries, regardless of brand.

Great information about batteries! I've gone with AGM batteries on my motorhome and used VMAX TANKS for the first two that I purchased. The biggest negative with VMAX is their customer support is totally non-existent. I used every method available multiple times to communicate and they simply don't/won't respond. Because of that I found that NAPA carries a good AGM battery at a fair price.

AGM battery is sealed and are safer against fire. Are used in race cars and most motorhomes in Europe too, and can be shipping with airliners. They are solid and can not cause any danger leak. have got two AGM battery in my RV for almost 10 years. The negative side is the heavy weight.

Great video. I am still undecided about which battery I am going to need. I am going to mix boondocking with rv camps. I have a Coachhouse platinum II. I am a newbie and right now there is a regular 12V battery in my RV. I live in Florida so I don't think the ACM will work for me since you mentioned heat reduces the life span. Any suggestions? My generator is propane and I do have an invertor but can't run my air/heat off the battery. That is only propane.

So, if I'm going from a standard 12 volt system typical of many travel trailers, to a 6 volt lithium...or just golf cart batt...do i need to change the convertor and charger unit...? If so... are plug and play units available? Great videos always friend, thank you.

We have not been able to run the heater. Not sure we have enough battery storage to run lights, water pump and two sleep machines at night . GREAT VIDEO! Quick question.. I have a brand new class c. 580 watts solar with a gopower pwm 30 solar controller with lithium setting. Just bought 2 safari 1300s and wanted to drop them in. Eventually will swap out converter or upgrade to inverter. Do u think it's necessary to install dc 2 dc charger to protect alternator? It's a brand new Ford 7.3 with 220 amp alternator which I am sure has a 60 amp fuse.. I keep hearing lithium low resistance will damage alternator without dc to dc charger but I am not quite sold on that... the charge controller is sending 24 amps and charges those safaris just fine (as long as there is sun) so at this point I am not too concerned about lack of full charge from alt,gen or shore power(converter with only la setting) thanks

I just purchased a Jayco trailer and it annoys me that the dealer never offered me a battery upgrade. I'm stuck with the lowest specification. Question; would one AGM to replace my single rv / marine be the most cost effective upgrade. Side note, I only do three day camping every month so the trailer is in storage most of the time.

Just picked up a new Group 31 65ah AGM at AutoZone for $95. We'll only really boondock overnight when making long trips. Other than that we'll be at campgrounds. What do you recommend to charge our Group 31 charged so we can use it while we sleep?

When comparing BB and Energy. Two other considerations should be looked at. Warranty and weather.

BattleBorn and The Safari UT 1300 are actually very similar and can both handle a moist environment. The 1300 is designed to the IP65 standard so boats and a little weather are fine just don’t submerge either one. I personally would mount both protected from the elements and not worry about theft too that way.

The only thing as an electrical engineer that concerns me is i've never had to lead acid battery burst into flames and burn down a project or a house however...............

Great video appreciate your attention to detail. However, I would like to take smaller steps. Wrapping up our 5th wheel purchase choice and should be taking delivery of a new Cougar 368mbi soon. I do want a total solar setup eventually, but due to extreme upfront costs of a complete solar system when coupled with the initial RV purchase .. it’s a huge $ hit. I was considering having the dealer to credit me the standard deep cycle lead acid battery cost and start with a 100Ah LiOn battery for main coach battery. (I can likely use the battery credit to buy a broom or door Mat.). But starting off with one battleborn or equivalent LiOn battery (vs the el-cheap-o lead acid) I assume I will have some charging issue. Isn’t the coach battery charger not compatible to charge a LiOn battery? So starting with the 1 LiOn battery, what other upgrades will be required so it functions and charges as the dealer installed 1st lead acid battery? Coach battery charger likely an issue and in addition how do I charge the LiOn from the trucks 7pin connector? Do I need a 12v to 12v charger to handle the trucks 300amp alternator source? So I want to charge while on site power and charge the trailer when being towed. (Solar later) Of course I want to size the solution so I can add more batteries later, then the solar panels and it’s associated solar interface items. Guidance or additional video would be appreciated

@@maddiesnuffles2241 still baby steps "towards" solar. Costco had a 2pack special on LiOn Energy UT1300's. We ended up purchasing a Jayco Northpoint 377. Initially purchased that Costco 2pack while our coach was on order. Dealer did credit us about $230 for the lead acids included in our purchase and installed our UT1300's for us. After we got the coach home ...purchased a second set of 2, so now we have a bank of 4 lithiums. I can run our residential fridge about 3 days on that bank. So this bank of 4 is a starter system. Next is some 2 panel "kit" from the E trailer place. Then phase 3 would be an upgraded whole coach inverter. Our roof has plenty real estate to place 6 or more panels .. and plan to add 2 at a time as I increase the solar foot print. We're not boondockers .. need just enough solar to keep our batt bank charged to run the residential fridge and lighting

It is very simple to do and you can check the price at $850 per battery, check the price on the new converter they put in.

I have $175 each for 2 Trojan T 105 amg batteries and the work very well biggest down side is the weight at 68lbs each

I think they are both fantastic batteries and have not been disappointed by either. The Lion Energy are a little lighter and smaller with a lower price tag. Both are US companies but battle born does a portion of the assembly here in the states. Either way you can’t really go wrong as both companies have been outstanding with customer service and great warranties from what I have seen.

All these unanswered .... Questions.

I am a brand new RV owner... looking to upgrade/replace the batteries in my 1987 C Class. All I want to be able to do is use all the interior lights and the ability to run a 40w Dyson purifying fan for about 6-8 hours or so without being connected to a power supply. My RV is just for day trips to the beach -- something I can park in the lot and come back to for a nap in afternoon after playing on the beach, a private toilet , a shower to wash sand off feet & dog paws, and place to eat a to-go restaurant meal with my dog and chill. I am looking for a video to find out how much power (how many batteries) I need for my use... I feel like a lot of the videos I've been watching are for full timers who are on the road 24/7. Can you please explain briefly how to do the math for my power needs? I know I need to add up the watts on all the lights, the Dyson, and other things that you forget about like the hot water heater & pump-- how do I find out how much power that uses? I've watched so many videos I think I've got information overload and I'm confusing myself. I know it can't be that hard to figure out.

Here is as simple a way as I can for you. kzread.info/dash/bejne/iYyo0pd_ZL2Wkaw.html. It is basically a simple way to setup a meter and run what you want to for how long you would like to and it will display how much you have used and then that will let you know how big of a battery bank you will need. But it looks like if you are just trying to run a fan for 6-8 hours a 100 amp hour battery should do it for you.

Spelling is important. It is "warranty."

With the AGM batteries maintenance free, do you still have to have any vented compartment vented outside or are they safe to use in the trailer

Lead acid battery has to be vented out . What about lithium battery ? Does lithium battery giving out any fume when storage energy is used ? Than you.

No, but the only problem about lithium batteries is they have a nasty tendency to burst into flames.

Style of use (not full time living) on a Lithium Ion battery, how is it affected if I use 2-Lion 1300s with a solar setup, but only use the rig occasionally during this year and keep the rig plugged into shore power in an indoor (not heated) storage facility between trips? Will the batteries be affected by not cycling for weeks or months? Should I be concerned about my solar during indoor storage? I also have a built in 5000w generator that I run every 2 weeks, that would keep the batteries charged in addition to shore power. I don't live in it yet, til I retire in 2021.

I keep wondering why nobody in the RV community is using carbon foam AGM batteries. Firefly batteries have 3000 cycles at 50% DOD and 1000 cycles at 80% DOD. They also aren't suseptable to sulfation if left in a low state of charge.

I would not be worried about the solar or the batteries in storage. These batteries actually store much better than lead acid. If you leave it plugged in I would just make sure it is a good lithium converter charger and it will be just fine. You would even be fine if you didn’t plug it in for months and used the battery disconnect.

The carbon foam battery is interesting but is more expensive than lithium. $540 for 116 amp hours at a 50% DOD to get the 3000 cycles is over $2100 for 4 batteries to have a 232 ah usable capacity. The Lion Energy is $1700 for 210 ah with all the other advantages of lithium.

Lithium is not a great choice in hot weather like ours in Middle East.

I can’t afford lithium right now and I’m looking for an alternative for the next 12 to 18 months. I’m debating between 2-6 V golf cart style wet batteries and two cheap 100 ah AMG for my 28ft travel trailer. Right now the interstate marine/RV batteries aren’t cutting it. Which should I pick? Go for the 100ah cheap Amazon AMGs or 2 - 6 volt golf cart wet batteries. The pricing is comparable between the two. Thoughts?

It’s a debate but I my opinion is yes because they can off gas in extreme situations. For me if you are putting batteries inside it’s lime to go lithium.

I was told that golf cart batteries can safely deplete to 0% and recharge over and over again, the way that golf carts do. Is that not correct?

I have 4 Lion batteries that allow me to run my van all day. I use a Dometic 13500 a/c that with full sun can run all day, we also use induction cooktop, electric water heater, dometic chest type frig..Now I can not run everything at the same time. If the a/c is running i can not run the water heater or cooktop. I cycle the a/c off in order to use other items. If there is no sun then I am restricted significantly. I have 600W of solar panels and am in the process of adding 300W more.

Everybody wants to talk about batteries, but they don't mention replacing the charging system, inverter etc, etc.

You have solar on your RV. Which battery do you personally use?

We have used Battle Born for a couple years and have loved them. I’ve switched over to Lion Energy Safari UT 1300 because of the output, capacity and size. I only had room for two Battle Born Batteries but the small area is big enough for 3 of the Lion Energy batteries.

So I’ve been communicating with Lion Energy via text today after watching your video and trying to educate myself further. I was preparing to buy Battle Born’s with my 15% off through escapees because of all the RV KZread folks that I watch bragging on them. The website for Lion says that you can drop these right in where your lead acid batteries come out. That is partially true but further investigation tells me that I’d get better charging to full capacity with a lithium specific converter charger. How much of a hassle is that Jared?

Thanks for the video. I would really like to go with lithium batteries but the upfront cost is prohibitive. Would there be a problem with installing one lithium 12 volt today and a second in parallel a year or two from now? Any problems with new and older connected in parallel? Cheers.

Yes lithium is the only battery type I would do that with. I was told by Battle Born and Lion Energy you could add to your battery bank after a year or two. So you could start with one and add a second one later.

Is it true that most stock converters are not designed to charge Lithium?

Correct they are not the best. They will charge them but not anywhere near capacity. It’s fine typically for the short term if you are upgrading things over a few months but doesn’t make sense to get the best battery and not charge it properly for the long term.

Okay, dumb question of the day because I'm sure you have addressed this in one of your videos, but I just can't find it. If I have a bank of two of the Lion lithium batteries, approximately how long can I run at least my air-conditioning in my travel trailer?

It depends on how many amps per hour your air conditioner draws. I would guess a typical rv AC would draw 75ah? If you have 200 amp hours of battery maybe 2.5 hours but I think it more complex than this. It’s very expensive and cumbersome to run ac on battery power.

Can you put lion energy and battle born together?

There are some serious ethical considerations related to lithium battery. One has to do with children harmed by lithium mining/production. Great videos in general, but the harm caused by purchasing lithium batteries is worth noting. Maybe you did -- I was unable to hear whole video yet. Thanks for generally great videos.

Battleborn is a true 10-year warranty that may be transferable to another owner whereas the Lion is not transferrable.

We have had Battle Born batteries for the last couple years and have loved them they are a great battery. The warranty with Battle Born is an 8 year plus a limited 2 years for a total of 10 years and is Non-transferable. I have heard of both giving replacements to the second owner of the batteries and haven't heard of any getting denied from Lion Energy for the second owner. Both are amazing batteries and I wanted to give first place to Battle Born but after running the Lion Energy 1300's through a handful of test I would have to ignore the results.

@@AllAboutRVs First let me say that I really enjoy your videos and you have a lot of great information and topics you cover. Disclaimer, I am an electronic engineer by education and I tend to overbuild things. Both of these batteries are great for the RV community, and I am glad there is finally some real competition for BB. Will Prowse over at DIY Solar with Will Prowse actually tears apart both the Lion and the BB batteries, Will, thank you for tearing up almost $2K of batteries so we can look inside. The BB batteries are made up of 4 modules of 30 cylindrical batteries, whereas the Lion uses 4 prismatic cells. If one of the BB cylindrical cells fails you will not even notice. If a prismatic cell fails in the Lion the entire battery fails. Anyway, Will Prowse does a great job of comparing the BB and the Lion 1300 and explaining the pros and cons of many LiFePO4 batteries.

These battery videos always lose me without putting into context of RV usage examples. Such as, “I’m boondocking overnight and with two lithium batteries I can power this and that overnight...”

TWO FACTORS YOU OVERLOOK… FIRST; I’m 70 years old and don’t even buy green bananas anymore. A buyer considering Lithiumu Ion Batteries needs to have a frank conversation with themselves and ask how many more years they are going to be on the road in their RV? Lithium Ion batteries may outlive their usefulness to the average retiree. SECOND; most RVs being re-powered with new battery banks that are six to twelve years old will probably not have a useful lifespan that at that stage will exceed Lithium Battery replacements… So, if you are young and purchasing a new RV, then order it with Lithium Ion Batteries.

Lion and battle batteries are so over priced, not reasonable unless being provided batteries as long as they show up on the videos. Not worth the cost as 4 cost $3600.00
