RV-12 - Part 2 - Left Wing Part 1
Juan Browne, myself and our friends & families are building a Vans RV-12 aircraft.
In this video, Juan explains some construction basics, we get the kids riveting ribs to the spar and make good progress on the left wing.

Good Stuff James! Thanks for documenting our work here!!
Good job Juan and James. Teaching kids is a rewarding experience. My hat is off to all those supporting this build program.
10/10 to both of you James and Juan. Those kids are so lucky to have you as parents and mentors. Get them of those screens. Now all they need to do is join EAA 😊
This video is riveting Sorry, I’ll let myself out. 😅 Honestly, great work with the kiddos.
Oh geez... building an RV with Brownie... how great could life be? I'll be following along through this adventure for sure!
I hope your hanger is holding up ok so far. I know Juan is concerned about the rain on top of the snow. I really enjoy your adventures.

I was able to get out there and shovel a TON of snow off the roofs of mine, before the rain came. A good work-out, for sure! Thank you for asking!
I learn something every time I listen to Juan - great to see the way he's working with the kids to bring them on. Shame I'm seven thousand miles away otherwise I'd be there "getting in the way" (sorry, "helping").
GREAT JOB, you're grooming a whole batch of engineers & designers. Good family time.

It's really nice! Wish I had a bit more time to spend up there, Juan is doing the bulk of the work. But lots of kids coming and going, as you can see from my clips, which is the whole point. Get them exposed to it!
Great having Juan on board and also great to have the kids assisting. This sure is an exciting project and lots to learn.. :)
Don't forget to have all of your helpers sign and date somewhere on the inside of the wing skins.

We did sign in the wings!
I've built two of those (RV-12) SUPER airplane. Good choice
Another fantastic video brought to us by a very nice couple. Thanks James and Diane.
This is awesome! Next clear day im going to fly down and see what your up to!
Just a helpful hint. Instead of dimpling the nut plates just use an -3 oops rivet and counter sync.
Excellent report James. It would seem there will be many Padawans to help in the build. Fortunately you have Jedi Master, Obi Juan to train the young ones. Working with one's hands, what a great lesson!
I am currently mentoring high school kids at the Tehachapi airport. We are building a RV -9 & a RV-10. If your down this way stop by and ck it out. Great to see others are doing the same thing.

Oooooh boy! I just finished my very first flush repair. This is all so familiar! Great video James! I've got a Juan at my airport, helping people learn as well. His name is Doug! So much knowledge and passion!
You should consider purchasing a battery powered rivet gun. They are smooth, fast and quiet...

Sounds good to me!
One you need to get a pneumatic, rivet gun they save your hands
I'm 88 now you'll finish on my 90th. The kids will be Graduated from high school Good luck and I want to know who's the test pilot?????
i like it!
I wish I had a bar in my workshop but I don't want to slow my build down any more. I know people have house decorating parties you seem to be having an aircraft building party.

It's always a party with Juan around! Except when he's being a slave driver. :)
That looks like a satisfying structure to assemble, until you discover an early mistake which requires lots of rectification :) Have a NC beer for me
15:00 Is he talking about the lightening holes or the rivet holes? I doubt that Van's does it any different, but both start with the same step at the Zenith factory. The rivet holes are CNC machined with a small milling bit and the lightening holes start with a small locating hole about the size of a rivet hole. The locating hole matches with a pin in the die that is used to cut and flange the hole to the final size in a large metal press.
2:16 Eight hours from bottle to throttle.

Definitely!
I've always wanted to do this. But, my fear is being gung-ho at first and then losing steam. I think doing this by committee makes the work go FAST. Was this wing assembled in one day, or over several days?

Good question, Nathan. The work you saw here was performed on Feb 4th to the 9th. Juan is an energizer bunny, and has more time to work on this than I, (when he's not on trips).
Dear Juan, at 11:45 I translated your statement to portuguese and sent it to many friends: Aos 11:45 diz o piloto Juan Browne, pai de pelo menos uma das crianças.
