Yikes... Thinking about it, the Empress herself told the Emperor that the his ruthlessness, coldness, and obsession with others maintaining facades was going to hurt the people around him, regardless of whether they were close to him or not. He did just that... and it is probably why (spoiler warning) it ticked him off when Ruyi and Yanwan put it in his face.

The Empress was suspected by some because of her refusal to adopt and the ill-treatment of Zhemin's son, Yonghuang. But this was never confirmed in the series and the Empress seem to deny it even in the presence of just Sulian who has been her most trusted maid.
