I saw him about ten years ago. He ordered a coffee at the bar where I was working. I was stunned since I did not expect to see him at that time and place. He noticed it, winked, smiled and thanked me for the coffee. Truly a modest and polite man. I can say I'm honoured to have served him.

+Reb3nga I had a similar experience. In 1989 I had bought a new motorbike and went to the dealer to pick it up. Outside stood a big white motorhome. There where two new bikes outside standing next to eachother; Mine, a full on sports bike and an all white huge Honda Goldwing with all bells and whistles and a little trailer in the same livery. I stood bend over my new pride and joy looking at all the details when I heard a voice saying 'nice bike you have'. Looking up I directly stared in the face of Rutger Hauer. All I could say was 'you too' (he was a youth hero of mine playing in a tv serie Floris in 1969 so it was a bit of a big deal to meet him). Then we shatted a while about our bikes and his big motorhome (which could store the Goldwing btw). Very friendly gentle man. Very nice to have met him.

I always thought of Roy as being a self-aware child who would murder in rage as a result of confusion resulting from a lack of childhood. He killed his "father"in a fit of rage once he realized that even Tyrell could not prolong his life. Roy finally matures and realizes his humanity when he saves Decker from falling.

Well that s precisely the point of thé movie. Show that thé replicants are more human than humans themselves. At thé vert first scène you already see it. Hosen is doing voigt kamp test. You can see Leon has émotions, when Hosen stays cold as a robot, that s the irony.

@@MrFrussel He actually didn't, he died on 19th of July. The news broke on the 24th after his burial. Wouldn't call it a "fun" coincidence neither. It's tragic.

I'm 37 and I've just seen this film for the first time in my life. A masterpiece. And the soundtrack from Vagelis was simply orgasmic for the ears. I can't believe I missed this film. Better late than never I guess.

Sounds like a very good choice, it is so easy to miss out on truly great movies if one just stays with the current titles. I watched Blade runner when it came out, but of course i didn't learn to appriciate it until maybe 10 years later. Since i was just 5 at the time haha! i have little recollection of that moment but i re-watched it several times later. I have a list of movies that i think movie buffs shouldn't miss out on at any cost. Blade runner is definately amongst the top of the chart. I grew up watching Jason and the argonauts from -63 and The journey to the centre of the earth from -59 it just rolled on from there. If you haven't seen any of those, i really recommend it. There is something about the special effects from the time that makes the movies alot more human. And doesn't distract from the journey or the messages or the plot.

As someone who grew up alone and unloved by those around me, Roy's words touched my soul in a way no movie ever has before or since. The pain and loss of your entire life experience vanishing unshared and unseen into the void is soul rending. Roy expressed these feelings in a way that instantly resonated with me. It hurt me to my core, and still does today. Roy and I are very much alike, both trapped in a world we don't really understand, filled with thoughts and feelings nobody else seems to want to share or care about, wondering what we did that was so wrong. In the end, we all just want to be seen and loved by someone.

I saw Bladerunner when it first came out. It blew me away then and still blows me away. Rutger was a superb actor and this interview reveals the depth and soul of the man. The flesh may be gone but the iconic image of Rutger as Roy is immortal.

For me this film almost 40 years old has the most authentic feeling of any futuristic SciFi picture. All the CGI and other tech haven't come close to capturing the same experience. The actors the scenary, the music which is huge just makes it feel as real as it gets. One of the best movies ever made.

Mike T I remember seen it as a kid and the use of Ford was brilliant contradiction to the fluffy Star Wars movies , it should not have worked but it did says a lot about Ford as an actor and how he could transcend been typecast as Solo , Hauer was a revelation in his role , I’m surprised he never popped up in a Tarantino movie .

He was the best thing in the original Blade Runner.

John Techwriter so true. Such a powerful performance by him in the classic masterpiece Blade Runner. Love the twist that he was the good guy all along and wanted to spare Deckards life to know that he was only a human who didn't have long to live and all he wanted was to live and was forced to be Slave and then hunted down like an animal. I'm guessing he didn't wanna be controlled so he escaped. Deckard had no idea that he was killing slaves. How awful poor Roy. Deckard is used as a bounty hunter to kill slaves as sport for I'm guessing the bad leader couldn't control them.

As a combat veteran in Vietnam, betrayed by our own country, I can strongly feel how that little speech laid open my pain; a pain that separates us from the civilians/politicians who creat wars and sennd us to fight.

He's done so much more than Blade Runner. This man was a true legend. He will be missed

i have never met Rutger, but when i was younger i started to collect things, and i found his poster on ebay, listed by his STARFISH foundation. i bought it, and asked him via email if he could personalize it for me. his assistant told me that this is impossible, because Rutger was in Italy back then...but Rutger will prepare something for me. couple of weeks later i got his picture from the famous scene wit h the quote: i ve seen things you people wouldnt believe... - to Piotr, with a little heart drawn. what a gift to a fan. this guy was amazing. will always be in our hearts ;(

The style of Blade Runner is often imitated... the soul of Blade Runner cannot be touched.

Rutgar was such a gentle, well-spoken man. Some may remember him from Blind Fury, or Split Second, or even the Guinness adverts! But for me, his dying monologue at the climax of Blade Runner was imperious. I'm too old to be even commenting to be honest, but I've shed my fair share of tears watching and re-watching the Tears in Rain speech. Truly touching.

So much of Science fiction is a mirror, an artifice for the current times political and social aspects. Blade Runner does not have this. Marry that with music that is emotionally centered, sets and technology that are not comical or outrageous, rather realistic and completely feasible and performed with authenticity, you get a timeless masterpiece. People can argue the story is an issue and that is of course fine, because story is personal and subjective. But Blade Runner is at the top of the cinema pyramid.

One of the best monologues in the history of cinema.

It is amazing , But when I think of Blade Runner , Harrison Ford is not the actor that comes to my mind , It is without a doubt Rutger Hauer .

David Joe In test screenings the audience sympathized with Roy. The studio freaked out. Hence one of the reasons for the terrible voice over version.

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe! Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion! I watched C-Beams glitter in the dark at the Tannhauser Gates! All these moments will be lost in time...like ...tears, in rain! Time to die...!" One of the most memorable lines in film history! Blade Runner is such a fantastic film!

I saw this in 1982 at the theater as a 16 year old. It changed by life. No movie has ever been able to live up to Bladerunner. Not even 2049.

Hauer’s monologue at the end literally made that movie into the classic that it is. Everyone was great but Hauer encapsulated the theme of the movie and made you care deeply for the androids in the most articulate and beautiful way-great collaborative film making

Flesh+Blood, The Hitcher, Ladyhawke are three other great movies with Rutger Hauer who is one of my favorite actors. Dire Straits, INXS, Eurythmics, Talk Talk, Simple Minds, AC/DC, ZZ Top, Cock Robin, ABBA, The Police... It just goes on and on... The vibe of 80s just can't be beaten.

Those beautiful Dutch eyes of this man will stay with me forever. His role in Bladerunner impacted millions, and his famous line is a comforting call in the dark to those who hear it. Dank u Rutger 🙏🏻😪

I re-watch Blade Runner about once a year in a pitch black room by myself, it is the only movie I do this with. Sure - if you really analyze it there are plot holes. But the key to Blade Runner is not to over-analyze but to go with the style, feel and message of the movie. It's sci-fi pulp-fiction but it also reveals something about humanity's soul. Don't agree? Your loss.

+shingnosis That's absolutely right. The plot is *good enough*, but it's a movie you have to feel more than anything else...let it wash over you, preferably with a good smokey whisky in your hand. (I recommend Talisker or Laphroaig.) In my opinion it's the most beautiful movie ever made...certainly the most beautiful soundtrack allied to a stunning visual and thematic experience.

Genius. Rutger Hauer took a potentially 1 - dimensional character, made him into a sympathetic character.

Rutger Hauer has an incredible charm and way of expressing himself that no-one else can. He just oozes intelligence and charisma, with a slight edge of danger. Brilliant performer.

He had the most wonderfull eyes, and personality❤❤❤❤😢😢😢

Blade Runner was and is a classic. And it was made so by Rutger Hauer's incredible performance... RIP and thank you.

It's incredible to live in a time when you can see someone in their prime and later in their twilight years reminiscing about their younger years. What a privilege.

I could not agree with you more, Stuart. He was a beautiful man, inside and out, and a highly accomplished and intelligent actor. I hope his personal life was happy. We shall miss him.

His performance in the movie and especially the last scene surely influenced my life and my way of thinking about things. This movie is still my most favourite of all time. I have a feeling this won't change until my last day. Great thanks to Rutger Hauer.

I agree. I say the same thing about John Carpenter's "The Thing." With all the advancement in special effects over the past 25 years, few sci-fi horror films can still match Carpenter's remake of the classic.

Such an underrated actor, never got the recognition he should have.

My grandfather took me to see this movie when it came out. I was 15. I loved it. But most of all I loved that it felt like my grandfather was sharing a glimpse of something way off in the distance with me. Right up there with the day he used the last of his firecrackers to teach me how to set them off, and still keep all my fingers.

Nice memory ! I wonder if your grandfather thought it was just a regular sci-fi like StarWars, or realised it was something so much more special ? Either way, it's really cool that he took you. I wish my grandfathers were still alive. I must be about 10 years younger than you, but remember my parents watching BladeRunner from a VHS recording in the late 80s, when I was about 13. I've since watched it many times on DVD/BlueRay, and will finally get to watch it tomorrow evening at a cinema, thanks to the BFI for organising this one-off showing across the UK !

visually Blade Runner is still one of the most interesting/amazing films made to date. and Like Brazil, when it came out the studio executives did not understand or appreciate it's brilliance and tried to change it to fit their own limited cognitive faculties...

a lot of things happen in the background of Brazil and it's easy to miss them. especially look at the posters and what they say or how they have been altered to say something else such as the sign at the Shangri la apartments that Sam goes visits to deliver the refund check to Mrs Buttle for her husbands interrogation over charge ...someone has scrawled Shan-Gorilla apartments across them...that's just one example. there's a lot of behind the scenes stories and facts that make Brazil a lot of fun...just like Blade Runner, it's appreciated more by the fans than the hollywood system pretends to care

Roy Batty was a freedom fighter, if there were more Replicants on Earth, he would've been a revolutionary, like Spartacus or possibly Gandhi. I cannot imagine anybody but Mr. Hauer in this role !

Daniel Appleton Just view this movie again after 2 decades. I got that feeling too and felt more sympathy for his character this time around. Wasnt much a follower of RH work then but checking out some of his more popular roles. Very under rated actor & I hope he was placed in roles with more range than just 'bad guy villan ' roles. But guess will find out.:)

pinz2022 He had roughly a lifetime of memories crammed into his brain, which was going to shut down / short out in 5 years. That would turn anyone sadistic & homicidal, & just plain old Joker - like bat - s**t crazy. & he's desperate because he wants a longer life - span. I'm not saying this excuses Roy & his actions, but it kinda puts them in context.

How he didn't win the Supporting Actor Oscar is still one of the biggest mistakes in Academy history. A truly great performance in a great film.

I've seen and loved many great performances in many great movies, but Rutger Hauer as Roy Batty moved me more than, I think, anything I've ever seen on screen. The horrible irony of a replicant understanding humanity better than humans do, moved me so, and still does to this day. I'm glad he was aware of the effect his role had on people, as now I'll never have the chance to tell him so myself. RIP Rutger/Roy.

Rutgar Hauer is an enigma! His role in Blade Runner is a look to the future. I appreciate that I saw the original release. I will never love Rutger Hauer any less. He is an enigma that will out live this lifetime. Bless his heart & I am blessed to see him in all these movies! Rest in Peace one of my favorite actors! Rest in Peace. You will always loved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw hundreds of movies - most of them forgotten. But this scene will stay forever, as it is such a deep feeling in all of human beeings - begging for more life. And accepting when its over and make peace with the moment... all those moments are lost in time... like tears in .. rain.

I agree, most of todays movie makers think (if they ever do) that they can get away with explosions, car chases and foul language. Wit and Intelligence seem to have been ...lost in time...like tears... in the Rain....

"The Blood Of Heroes" aka "The Salute Of The Jugger" with RH and Joan Chen is also a great film I rewatched many times, but doesn't come close to Blade Runner.

Rest well now. Your star has burnt long and bright. You will not be forgotten.

People who understand this film are always in awe of this eternal masterpiece of art and philosophy.

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die..." -- This was a fabulous interview. I saw the movie in the theater when it first came out and was astounded by it. I knew we had stepped into a new medium with it. The cool thing about Rutger Hauer is that he still loves it, appreciates the effect of it, is not jaded by it, and authentically reproduces in this interview the verse of his life, rather than the bloated remnants that become most great actors as years pass.

What a genuinely lovely man, who really truly understood what his work meant to people.

Brings tears to my eyes to see him. My father's been gone many years . He and Rutger Hauer could pass for twins.

Goosebumps every time I hear that line "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe" just fantastic. Makes me think so much about life contemplating what I am who created me. Also the idea we could possibly create life that could think for itself and then question us it's own creator in that explorative, mysterious, condescending, and superior manner which Batty delivers that famous line.

He was a very sexy man... What a great face and smile he has!!! It draws you in!!!

Roy Batty's"tears in rain" monologue is the greatest in movie history. Glorious, poetic, tragic and beautiful. WOW!

A unique, one of a kind actor. Always brought an indefinable, impish quality to every role. Goodbye Rutger. Thanks for all those moments.

Bert - Rutger lives on through his films and through each of us. An awesome actor whose loss has left a huge void.

Roy Batty's soliloquy is absolutely moving. Thank you Rutger for giving so much.

Roy Batty and Rutger Hauer are one in the same. Few times in the world of cinema has that happened. Few times has a movie line become iconic. May you see Orion forever.

Magnificent actor and a gorgeous man. There was something about him. That thing you can't put your finger on... I will miss you sir. His performance in Blade runner was haunting like we could see the future too. I know I did. I have to watch it again. RIP RUTGER HAUER.

Through the years I have re-watched Blade Runner on dvd, and this scene comes back to my mind unbidden at random times, as though to remind me of my mortality and the evanescence of beautiful or spectacular sights and events I have witnessed as I approach my end (not so far off now).

What an amazing actor, person (Rutger) and character (Roy) that is immortalised by that one amazing line that just froze time and summed up life in a single tiny few seconds. Love the film but that line has stuck with me for life.

40 years later it's still an incredible iconic awesome experience, it set the standard for sci-fi so clearly and highly that only Ridley Scott has been able to mach as time went on, I'm one of the blessed to have seen it in the theater on opening day and it was talked about in my art school for the duration of my schooling , the combination of the soundtrack and top quality actors took sci-fi to the level of visionary with windows to very possible future like events that the mind could escape to without becoming harmful to your spiritual life and make you paranoid about it but just enjoy the ride to wonders unknown through eyes of peace when Rutger Hauer surrenders to the end of his life it's a glorious moment in history and I'll never forget it as long as I live.

A true gentleman. Rest in Peace Rutger Hauer. The scene where his character Roy Batty dies is tremendously mocking. This will always be the greatest death scene in any film ever made.

And the way he spoke those "Shakespearean" lines were crucial to the soul within them.

I was lucky enough to see this in Theaters and I was one of the people who loved it from the moment I saw it. Furthermore, this one "moment" scene sort of brings the movie together; makes you understand the motivation behind all of the characters. Just outstanding.

Rutger made that movie and that Scene the best Scene of all time as far as I am concerned in Cinema History. I have always seen it as very powerful seen and never get tired of seeing it over and over. I am sad to see him go.

RIP Rutger Hauer - you saw the future 30 years ahead of its time and now you are beyond life itself.

I saw this in the theater when I was a teenager. I didn't understand why I was the only one in the movie house. A true masterpiece. By today's standards it might seem dated. In the early 80s everything was futuristic. Internet, video and cell phones. Way ahead of it's time.
