Rusty Gold | Blacksmith Tool Set Restoration & Handle Making

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Old tools are a dime a dozen at most flea markets and boot sales. It doesn't take much to bring them back to proper working order. Making handles and salvaging great quality steel in this Deep Dive!

    Why do you give tools shine? are to be used as a man ... Will it be because you're a ladybug? and you need your shiny gems. gay

    The faces on my gunsmith hammers are polished to at least that degree. Metal can be moved back into its proper place without marring the surrounding finish. It is handy for repairing bunged up screw slots, etc. If you can't appreciate that; perhaps, you should go back to watching "kittens playing musical instruments."

    The man gives respect to the tools. Old tools at that made no doubt before most of our days. You know back when folks took care of things and respected one another and took pride in their craft. You take care of your tools as you would your vehicle or your house or yourself. Especially if you depend on these things as a source of income. So if Mr. McAfee chooses to display the newly refurbished tools in such a fashion then so be it. Where they are they will get plenty of use and love for many years to come. By the way thank you Mr.McAfee for sharing your methods for restoring some awesome flea market finds.

    Your mirror finish in 3 easy steps makes us want to cry! We’ve been hand sanding from 60 to 3000 grit on these axe heads for the last 10 hours 😭 we’ll get a belt grinder soon and try out your 3 steps. Fantastic looking set of tools there dude

  • @skullandspade

    Thanks fellas! Certain tools definitely help with the process. The white compound/budding wheel combo is the real hero. Those wheels are cheap as shop equipment goes and will speed through those last few grits without overheating the steel.

  • @BrothersMake

    @BrothersMake

    5 жыл бұрын

    Brett McAfee that’s a great tip thanks dude. Do you even need strop afterwards or do they come straight off the buffing wheel razor sharp?

  • @skullandspade

    @skullandspade

    5 жыл бұрын

    Buffing wheel serves the same purpose. A strop is used to take the final bur off the edge, as it gets pulled/rubbed off by the leather. “Razor sharp” is also relative boys. If you can get arm hair to shave, you’re well good. Remember that if the steel got super got in your grinding/sanding, the edge might have lost its temper, and may not take an edge as well.

    Chris Schwartz just did a blog poast about hammer handles for his tool company. He mentioned if you shape the hexagon right you can feel the orientation of the tool in you hand. I’m guessing if you make two parallel sides longer than the others you could achieve that.

  • @skullandspade

    @skullandspade

    Tons of great videos on the tubes. Main suggestion from my end is getting a piece of leather, or ideally rubber, and putting a strip on the jaws. Grabs hold of anything!

    Great Video as always. I am curious though all the buffing and wire wheeling, what do you put on the metal after to prevent surface rusting since it is all new exposed metal?

    i just wipe with BLO or wd40. Keep them oiled along with the handles and they'll last a lot of hours.

    Is the blackening of the handle just for the aesthetic or does it have any benefit for the wood connection etc

  • @SciPunk215

    I love this! Is there a purpose for the burnt handles, or is that just for aesthetics? They do look awesome.

  • @skullandspade

    @skullandspade

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thank you! It’s definitely aesthetic but burning the handles also serves a function. Because I rough file the wood, the flame softens the grain and burns off any splintering. It also creates a layer of carbon/coal which is an antiseptic in case you get a blister or raw skin from swinging. A lot of traditional Japanese tool makers did this back in the day.

    As a kid I was always intrigued when ever I seen a bucket of old rusty tools. Didn't quite understand it back then. You just put that feeling into a video. Nice job. Really like the burnt handle look. Quick question, anyone can answer. When putting a handle on a hammer or an axe. I've seen people hit the back end on a hard surface, and I've seen people hit the back end with another hammer while holding it upside down. Any difference in the two?

  • @skullandspade

    @skullandspade

    5 жыл бұрын

    Holding an axe upright and slamming it on a hard surface could lead to it hitting you... Which probably wouldn't end well. Same with a hammer, maybe slightly less red goo. I'm not an expert, but the upside down hammer strikes is a preferred method for longer handled sharp pointy things, smaller blunt stuff can be done with a few slams. Oh, and it also depends on whether you're reseating on an existing handle. Hitting the butt end with a hammer can lead to mushrooming or splitting. I leave a little extra material on the end just in case, then trim it down after.

    Wow, such a well worked bucket of rust. Kkkk Is Drop Forge a good brand for old tools? I went to search because of the "Brasil" logo. Love to see brasilian products been used in projects like this.

  • @skullandspade

    @skullandspade

    "Drop Forged" is the process of how the tool was made. The steel is made hot, then put into a giant stamp/die. There is no brand on that specific hammer, but its a really great tool. The steel is great quality. +1 Brasil!
