Rusty Eyeletter Restoration

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Welcome! Today I will be restoring an old Bates Automatic Eyeliter, also sometimes called the Ajax Eyelet Fastener if built before 1927. In this video you'll see the complete disassembly, paint stripping, rust removal, polishing, painting and reassembly of all the components.
These eyeletters were manufactured for many decades, and as such is difficult to pinpoint an exact date of manufacture, though its appearance is that of an older style compared to the most recently manufactured Bates eyeletters. This restoration went a bit smoother than some in the past, though yet again I find myself finding an item that was originally painted green. I hope to find some projects that I can justify painting any color in the future to change things up.

    Today I aquired a cardboard can of "Bates Ajax Eyelets". I read up on them, their history, etc, but wanted to come see the machine that they were used in in action. I certainly got more than I bargained for with this video. I love it, and I really love the color you picked. I think they're so much cooler than Staplers. I love the fact that you can tell if important documents have been tampered with once an eyelet has been used. Does anyone still manufacture the eyelets?

    Thanks a lot! I'd like to add that I did an on-video test of this eyelet press at the end of my video titled "Old Rusty 1902 Eyelet Press Restoration." You can still find Bates eyelets on their website, and there are many other companies out there manufacturing different sized eyelets of many colors. Thanks a lot for watching!

    My husband builds wind flags for bench rest shooting and the tail/vane is .0079 thick aluminum. A length of servers tape is attached to the tail/vane with a metal clip. Without some protection, the consistent movement would damage the tail/vane and as a minimum enlarge the hole. He has been using a Bates 40 for many years for this application and no failures yet and it looks good. Just saw one on eBay in real good shape that sold for $30, considering that they retail for over $300.

    Really nice restoration! I happen to have one of these that I’d like to restore.. at least so it’s working correctly again (the part that looks like a bicycle bell doesn’t advance correctly). I’m hoping taking it apart and cleaning it will reveal the reason why it’s not advancing. Anyway, Do you know if Bates eyelets are really the only eyelets that will work in this machine?

  • @randomrestoration6858

    @randomrestoration6858

    Sorry for the late reply, but I'd suspect you could find other eyelets that would work in this. The trick is finding correct sized eyelets, as slightly too small or large sizes wouldn't work reliably. Good luck on the repair, hopefully you'll be able to g bring yours back to a working condition! Thanks a lot for watching!

    Thanks for watching, and thank you for the tip! That's the one thing that I would have liked to tend to with this project, as the fact that there is some paint in the lettering in places and none in others makes it look a bit 'incomplete.' I'll definitely be testing out a few different methods to fill areas like that in for future projects!

    @@RCichard Thanks for the reply! I actually tried out a couple different methods last weekend for an upcoming project that you'll see on the channel in several weeks. I found that using a very fine needle (the type of needle used for injection) filed with paint allows you to be able to apply as little paint as possible quite accurately in recessed areas. Then (after a few minutes of drying) any small amounts of paint that ended up where you didn't want it can be gently wiped up with a super low lint cloth. It's a pretty quick method and the results are fantastic!

    Thanks for the question! Effectively what this does is presses/crimps in a small metal ring, usually into cloth/leather (though it can be used for a wide variety of things such as binding sheets of paper together) the center is removed and allows a string/lace to be passed through the fabric and, for example, be tightened without wearing the fabric. A bit late responding, but I find that, as a general rule, whatever I am working on can be pretty easily disassembled without cleaning them beforehand. I usually only clean them after paint stripping just so that I can remove any excess paint stripper before throwing the parts into the rust remover. The paint strippers I've used in the past are great for cutting through most any filth like grease for example, and so I guess the long answer short is: It's a bit more efficient to clean the parts later on in the process.
