Rusty BMW E30 325i Brake Caliper Restoration

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today I restore a BMW E30 325i Brake Caliper! Car brakes are always a fun projected to take on. Anyone can do it and it's relatively cheap to do.

Just for the record, I personally wouldn't have red calipers on my E30. The red just looked too good on camera not to go with it.
Firstly I inspected the caliper for ware and tare and decided to order a full caliper service kit. I then disassembled it and degreased the main pieces. Once they were dry I placed them in the blasting cabinet and removed 99% of the rust. I then had to go over with a steel wire wheel, on a rotary tool to remove the rest of the deep rust. It was then a matter of masking all of the threaded holes and piston cylinder.
The caliper then needed etching, priming, colour, and lacquer. Once dry I made sure the grooves in the cylinder were free from any rust or paint and began adding the new parts. I started by greasing the first gasket and pushed it in. The outer seal was then added. I then greased the piston and pushed that back in. The two guide pins and their rubbers were silicone greased and pushed in. The two pieces then came together with new bolts. The cleaned bleed nipple was then added, and the red cap to finish the restoration.
- Disclaimer: I am no professional. Especially when it comes to electrics. It is certainly an area I am looking to improve in. I am completely self-taught and would appreciate any feedback, advice or constructive criticism.

Ahh so you are doing a complete E30. I was wondering why you were restoring all of these parts and hoping this would be the case. As I have several project vehicles myself i'll be following that series closely. As an aside. It's awesome that they make rebuild kits or at least offer the parts individually to rebuild those calipers! Looks like E30 support is still strong. The 3 series is just excellent.

Protip: Take some brake fluid on your finger and coat the piston seal and a coat the bottom half of the piston also. The piston will go in a lot easier and the seal won't dry out if you don't plan on using the part for a while. Also, install the dust cover on the lip of the piston first then press it into the caliper after the piston is seated in the bore, then press the dust cover into the recess of the caliper.

After degreasing I would have thrown it to a bath of phosphoric acid for a day. Cleans up every nook and cranny, doesn't harm the parts and usually no need for a wire brush afterwards. But nevertheless, good job and props on using silicone grease on the slide pins!

Congrats on 200k subscribers. Locktite on the bleed nipple isnt needed, the nipple is the one part you want to move when bleeding the brakes. I've always found it easier to fit the piston before the dust cover, either way its still fiddly. Perhaps nickle plating the nipple would have added a bit of oooh, aaaarh and stopped future rust. Nice work as usual.

I just done my calipers up, with the slide rails I was so pleased you applied the correct lubricant, so many ppl use grease and either too much or not enough anyway, also not knowing the repercussions using the wrong lube, wear and leakage causing contamination ti the pads. I 2k'd myne aswell only I mucked the shoe clearance with paint, however no big deal as I fixed that with my dremel. Good work Steve. Take care celebrating 2019 mate. All the best again. James.

Never seen someone do so much effort in his brake system hehe, i cant argue with that! this looks just awesome. Still have to say that you never ever have to force the brake piston in with a tool! This tool is only ment for servicing your brakes (new pads/cleaning) It is easely possible with hand . The grease must be high friction grease on the guides! I hope you learned from me. Its brakes we talk about, those must be save ;) Still love this channel to watch!

Can’t read every comment but didn’t see it mentioned : one spot you didn’t mask (and should have) is the surface the brake ads will ride on. This needs to be clean steel so the pads slide smoothly. I’m not an E30 expert but just want to let you know in case some paint needs to be removed from those areas. One area of the car not to mess around with; brakes. Love the channel. Keep up the great work.

You can paint the calipers as long as the fluid stays _inside_ the system, which is _supposed to be_ closed to the outside world. It needs to be high temp paint, of course.

If his hobby is restoring things, I don't think that he would want to buy new ones. Where I live, finding new calipers for $20 (especially colored ones) would be impossible unless I stole them.

  • @SchweinungHD

Amazing if you can find them so cheap. Here in Norway, a single, used caliper in semi-ok condition is probably around $100, and then you'd have to restore that aswell. An aftermarked, not as good as OEM caliper is probably around $200+.

  • @Tailss1

Also here where I live if you put used brake parts on a vehicle it would void the road worthiness certificate. Rebuilding a brake caliper however is fine providing it is done correctly. Only thing this chap missed is honing the cylinder before installing the new piston. I would think the rebuild kit is much cheaper then buying a whole new caliper.

  • @Tailss1

    @Tailss1

    5 жыл бұрын

@@forevercomputing The piston was replaced and it's my understanding you should hone the bore to allow the new piston to seat properly. There is some seriously tight specs with these as working pressure (and heat) can be very high. Braking on a steep hill for example. There is no margin for error as this is a critical part of the cars brakes and you need to be able to trust it.

Nice! I used to struggle getting the dusk boot on but after many rebuilds I've discover that I can slip the boot on the bottom of the cylinder and then with it barely on work it into the caliper. Much easier that way.

I do a lot of work similar to this. I bought a large heated ultrasonic tank to clean parts in. I use 50% Simple Green and water. Sometimes, I let the parts sit in it overnight. This has been a game-changer for me and I cannot say enough positive things about it.
