Rusty and Burned 1950's Doepke Fire Truck Restoration
Hey everyone and welcome back to another restoration! In today's video I tackle a classic 1950's Doepke pumper. Doepke was a short lived toy company that made some amazingly detailed toys throughout the lates 40's and early 50's and this American Lafrance is no exception. Doepke licensed the toy right from American Lafrance meaning it is authentic to the real deal. It even has Goodyear tires!
This restoration was as the truck had unfortunately been badly burned in a house fire. The few plastic parts that remained were melted beyond recognition and all bright work had turned black. Fortunately with plenty of cleaning, buffing, and 3D printing I was able to bring it back to its former glory! I opted to used spray paint over powder coating for the main body as the body panels were a tight fit and could only reassemble with a thin coating. This made reassembly extra challenging as the paint was prone to chipping. Overall I have to say this is my favorite project so far!

Now you see why things were built so much better back in the day, just by watching you disassemble with all those parts. Now a day’s it’s 3 or 4 screws and a couple of plastic clips. Great job brother
Having grown up in Elmira NY where they manufactured American LaFrance fire trucks. This restore project is very cool. Very nice piece
This is a great project !! Today’s toys vehicles and items are made of nothing at all but plastic !! These very old ones are made of STEEL !! These antique pieces last so much longer than the new ones do !! Thank you 🙏📚📖🚒 !!
That was one of the best engineered and designed toys i've ever seen, someone put their heart in making that fire truck

The complex assembly of old toy trucks is amazing. Nothing like that today.

@@joe_diy OMG!!! Thank you so much for restoring that toy. It is an American LaFrance series 800 pumper truck. I drove one of those, for real, for 11 years. If it had been scaled out, that would've been the 200 gallon water tank version. Mine had a 750 gallon water tank, so it was longer than your run of the mill 800's. The sound of that V-12 engine, the air siren-it gets in your blood and never goes away.

@@The_Dudester Awesome story and history! Never knew much about the old pumpers but a lot of people have been psoting various facts! Doepke makes a ladder truck version as well

@@joe_diy I always wanted the Doepke models, but when they were available money was tight. Buddy L also makes an awesome series 900. The pickup truck you restored earlier, a family that adopted me not only owned that model of truck, they gave me the toy version and I played with it until the wheels fell off. No one restored toys back then and I am sorry to say it ended up in the city dump.

@@The_Dudester Are you talking about the older fire Engines that required a firefighter on the back end to steer the rear of the truck?
I had this very same toy firetruck in 1957. Just awesome to see it restored like that thank you.

Good morning Greg. Did the pump actually spray water?
So gratifying to watch! Patience, detailed and the right tools!
Great job. Interesting toy.
Ironic perhaps. A restored fire truck that survived a fire. Excellent job.
you did a great job restoring the fire truck.
old toys looks more fun than new ones
This fire truck is amazing.

‼ WOW EXCELLENT JOB......‼ 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Beautiful restoration.
Very nice work.
What a great looking fire engine!!!
I remember seeing a bright red fire engine in the 60's when I was a child. It was at a small substation in Indianapolis. Your restoration reminded me of that fire truck. Your attention to detail is greatly appreciated. Thank you for making this video.
What a beautiful job.
The original quality of the steel used in this toy really comes across in your wonderful restoration well done

I was thinking the same thing it looks very sturdy
Let's face it. ANYONE can take stuff apart. Hell, even I can. The talent, skills & knowledge to know what to with it after it's disassembled, is what really matters. If that was me, I'd have parts left over. Your ability to bring things "back to life" is absolutely amazing. Keep being you.
It's remarkable how once upon a time in America, this much quality of workmanship and attention to detail went into even a little kid's toy like this. They were made here in the States and the people who worked in the factories could live on what they earned, and there were no suicide nets on top of the buildings.
Super job on restoration of this firetruck. I love firetrucks old and new, but old always has so much more character. Thank you for sharing.
Fantastic you are so clever and dedicated and patient ,you bring new life to all the broken toys
The detail and craftsmanship back in the day was ridiculous.

I once had a similar toy 51yrs ago by Tonka, as I grew into adolescence, I ended up tossing it into the pond behind my house, during a dry spell 3yrs ago that truck revealed itself again & I retrieved it, even though it was to far gone to save, it actually made me think, of how much I loved it as a kid, & wished I hadn't done such stupid thing! At least now I have a real truck...lol

Very nice job. Really like that the color is a true rich red.
Beautiful job well done
Nice collector piece now!
That lock is like a little hidden treasure! 👑💎🔐
Awesome as new again! What an beauty!
This is fantastic. Now it just needs a firestation to call home.
This restoration was a real labour of love. I couldn't believe the attention to detail this manufacturer went into for a toy of that period! Today's manufacturers would be hard pressed putting out such quality in their toys. You really went all out, this resto is no less than a work of art in my opinion. Just magnificent.
Beautiful job

Congratulations for your patience. I don't have any. This toy is also my favourite. There's a lot of engineering in this truck, respect to Doepke brothers!
Nice old Truck🚒
Great looking!
Now that was a labor of love for this old toy that deserves a special spot on the display shelf. Very well done and very well presented. I especially liked that you didn't tear it all the way down to individual little pieces. This truck stood just fine without tearing the fenders off, the bottom off, ect.. Thanks for sharing this video with me.
