Rustoleum paint job metal flake speedokote 2k clear OBS Chevy project truck part1. Not a how to :)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is a project update on my budget restoration of a beat up OBS Chevy lowrider truck . In this video I spray a Rustoleum black base coat at 4/2/1 mix ratio using a 1.3 tip, then lay 2 layers of speedokote 2k clear with 3 flat teaspoons of Dipspade purple metal flake size 0.008 using the 1.8 tip. I still have to sand a few problem spots then spray multiple layers of clear to finish this part of the project. Please watch the newer video which fixed the issues I had in this video. The next attempt of this paint job came out perfect.

if it's a paint booth that is what you want some cheap one x one's and some clear plastic, and a shop fan, will do the trick as long as you have a clean level surface to shoot on. my dad did it and he graduated from auto body vo-tec class. even in a pro booth you are gonna get crap in the paint it'll buff out. if one doesn't care to wet sand, you should leave painting up to those that get paid for it. if you don't want to pay the work is the only option. it's strangely gratifying, the hardest part of going completely through a car is letting go of it after it's done. it tares at your soul.

I know I’m super late with this but my grandfather always told me that more coats do not mean you’ll get a smoother finish. The bare metal should be as smooth as possible and the same with each coat of primer. Once you have a smooth and clean base of primer then move into base coat of color. And repeat the process. And it never hurts to do a wet sand between coats. That way by the time you apply your final coat or two of clear you have a smooth finish. But you have the right idea and your doing great work man. Looks great with the color combo you chose.

@@imaboss1998 I learned its possible with a little extra knowledge on the process. If your new like me paint everything in one shot. Matching panels later without weighing or being exact on the amount of flake used is very hard or impossible. Also if using color flakes other then silver make sure you get very good coverage of the clear coats after the flake. Sanding through the clear at all will sand off the color making it silver ruining the finish. Now you can correct this I've been told by using full coverage of the flake. This way just add another flake coat to the damage then re clear it. This I have not tried due to not using full coverage. Since a few pros who seemed to know the trade commented with that fix its worth a try. I am positive it can be done my furniture came out great and has held up. Also I polished some of the hood and that was beautiful. In the mean time I've gone back to a black base and will attempt this again once the bed is back on.

In mixing the rustolium gloss black house paint, how much acetone did you use in order to thin it to a spray able application ? I have an acrylic base gloss black color paint that I am trying to figure out best way for me to actually thin the paint so I can use it in application on my 1997 Zx7r 750cc Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle plastic fairings kit. My orange color paint is water based an it needs thinning as well. In order to be sprayed through my paint gun. I'm just not clear on how to achieve that process. Any insight would definitely be appreciated...the orange house paint is a semi gloss orange.

  • @thisoldhooptie

You need to research the thinner or reducer for each paint type. Rustoleum is oil based enamel and thins best with acetone or mineral spirit depending on temp. Im in a hot humid area and thin the rustoleum at 4 parts paint 2 parts acetone and 2 oz of magic catalyst. Check the back of the cans your using they should have the proper reducer listed.

Depends on the paint. I lay the flake and clear shortly after the paint gets tacky. Or I wait for it to totally cure. Thats with rustoleum. You have to test how your paint reacts to the clear if its the cheap stuff. If you have already let it fully cure then scuff it up and go to town with the clear/flake. I ha e never used the paint you have selected so your test panel will tell you how to proceed.

I need the 2 door ready for the road before I pull apart the tahoe. Carpets are pretty easy to install. Your just trimming the front and sides a bit to fit under the dash and plastics. The good ones have pre molded rubber under them lining up the area under the seats and trans hump so you can see the extra on the sides and front.

  • @thisoldhooptie

The clear had a good bond with the paint and yes you are are correct that would be the easy way with no catalyst. The exact times are listed in the video, I believe it was 15 minutes. I used a catalyst mixed in my rustoleum which makes it harden faster. That is listed in the description magic catalyst and explained in the very beginning of the video. I give the paint mix details right before i paint. If you used plain rustoleum it's best to let the paint cure before shooting clearcoat if it's already on the vehicle. This will make sure the paint doesn't crinkle. Good luck 👍

I ended up having to go back to black due to not being able to match the front clip months later, the flake has to be shot the whole truck at one time if you don't use full coverage its very hard to match. Atleaste it was for me. So sanded it back down then I redid the black base only. Right now its gloss black. After I do the engine and suspension I will redo the flake, this time shooting the whole truck. I loved the purple flake.

The one major bit of info I could share if I may is when you are using whatever color as your base coat, use a flat paint not gloss like you did. Soon as you clear it the flat will turn gloss but gloss is like a sealed off coating once it's applied as to flat is porous so the clear will bond to it way better!! Plus flat paints apply a bit smoother so you are not fighting the orange peel as much. Makes a huge difference and it will be shinny in the end don't worry!! Long as you us gloss clear that is..

@@thisoldhooptie you will be shocked at the difference and ease of operation if you will. Automotive base coats once applied and flash off they are basically flat or a matte finish and as you apply the clear coat it looks so fricken cool to see the shine appear!! Also idk If you have seen the clear coat that is in a rattle can? It's still a 2k with activator and all that it's just separated in the can until you puncture the tab and they mix together in the can. Same stuff as you would apply out the gun but in a rattle can. For smaller projects or something that you want a tough nice finish on they are amazing!! Amazon has them and most paint stores. I did some custom tail lights just the other day and did a few coats of clear with a can and you can't tell the difference between the paint of the truck and the lights. Finish wise that is. Really awesome for smaller stuff and no clean up!! Will last a few day in the can after it's activated to if on a cool place but you want to use it up if you can and not store it once mixed. But ya cool stuff man!!

@@mauryamckendrick5446 I will more then likely do some painting with automotive paints when I'm done seeing what can be done with Rustoleum on the cheap. If I was shooting something with real value I would not be painting it with Rustoleum. I watched the few channels on KZread who did some nice things with Rustoleum. When I didn't see all the things I was looking for i decided to try them my self. I want to know what happens to perls, flake, and other 3 stage paint jobs when layered on rustolem. Im not saying its the right way, im just curious and I know by the views that many others are too. I know people dont like to here it, sanding things down being a waste of time and all, however its my time and i actually find sanding my projects and painting them relaxing. As for the spraymax 2k clear I have used that a few times on headlights and on furniture. Its what I used prior to having my fuji spray turbine setup. It does leave a perfect finish just less material for the money as you stated. I was originally going to do the whole truck with it. Between fixing the electrical mess in my ls swapped s10 and the finish work on this truck I will be painting some custom Rustoleum tests with flake, color shifting perls, perls, then finished with speedokote clear. Consider it a science experiment 😉

Thank you 👍 I will definitely do that. I ended up going back to black for a bit due to not being able to match the panels. I'm about to start a rustolium playlist. Stay tuned. This group of videos will answer all the questions. As for your questions, no, the clear was crystal clear, even better when cut and buffed out. The only clear that I have used that went on cloudy and then cleared was the 1k stuff on the dash. I'm not happy with the 1k. It's not as hard and shinny as the 2k. It's clear and looks great as cam be seen in many of my videos. I just prefer the 2k for all its benefits. The black other then being dirty has held up great so far. The dash has too. I'm also a big fan of the rustoleum paint jobs 😁

The products are listed in the beginning of the video and the description of this video. The paint and catalyst in my video work any season. The amount of time between coats depends on your local temps. For the clearcoat, you will need either fast, slow, or medium activator depending on what weather or season you use it. The times I used were based on 90 degree weather with high humidity.

I sand then re spray right over the rustoleum. In my playlist this purple truck is now gloss black. Its been that way for almost a year no issues. The only way I k ow of that would cause complications is if the oil based paint is not fully cured. Or if you don't scuff enough so the bed liner has something to bite into for a mechanical bond. Another issue would be if you painted a very thick layer of the rustoleum you can end up with cracking due to to much material. You can paint right over as long as its not crazy thick, not cured, or very smooth. Good luck 👍

What was the reason for going with rust oleum instead of say a base/clear since you were clearing anyways or going with a single stage urethane or even an oldie but goodie, a single stage acrylic enamel? All of these, even tho they are listed as single stage, can all be top costed with clear for durability, appearance, or to cover large flake, etc. That purple is absolutely gorgeous tho!! I love it!!

Thank you 👍I did things this way for a few reasons. First and foremost I have never painted something so large specifically an automobile and new I would waste alot of product learning. I also had much of what what used for doing furniture refinishing in my little girls room like the clear and flake. The cost of 1 gallon of black rustoleum was around 30 dollars at the time I purchased it, making this less then half the cheapest single stage on Ebay. And last I wanted to see if I could do it. Which i did figure out the process in the next test video. I was not however able to get parts to match when painting separate so its more sanding then all black till its put back together and can be painted this way in one shot. I have learned a ton along the way both with trial and error and the excellent group of people who add tips in the comments. For me its just having fun learning the process.

The UV properties would for sure hold up better with the duplicolpr paint shop line of paints. Its a little more expensive but its a off the shelf paint at $35 a quart and every autoparts store sells it. Autozone, advanced and oriellys. Hell I think Walmart sells it. The lacquer is considered hot (Faster curing) so it would definitely cure faster than the oil based paint and be way more compatible than oil based paint . Everything after that (after it cures) would work fine like in your vid.

I will give this paint job about a month or 2 before the paint cracks and shrinks like foil. That clear coat will not chemically adhere properly to that type of paint, Furthermore this is a 3 stage painting process 2k products is just a waste of money on cheap oil based paint. I'm not judging just giving useful information that I learned in School. My Modo is " if I'm going to take time to do something, I might as well do it right". For when you need to redue your paint, Nassan and cromax make great black car paint that's designed to chemically adhere to 2k products. and it thats too expensive look into waterborn paints... Thanks for the info. The oil based paint had a catalyst added which is why it works. People have clearcoated over oil for the last 40 years. Ussually they wait for the paint to cure them scuff and clear it. I have used the same paint job on furniture and it lasts fine indoors. The question was would the combo of catalyzed oil based paint and the clearcoat keep the uv at bay? So far this truck sat for 7 months in the Florida sun. No issue at all. I polished the hood and showed how things turned out last month. My only real problem was not keeping accurate track of how much flake I used. Since I'm new to painting this way, this was my downfall. I could not match the panels. I sanded down and went all black again then reassembled the truck for round 3. Truth be told just want to see how it turns out. Pass or fail it will be posted for all to see. Im just having some fun.

The trick is to turn the ac units off to the house if they are in the garage. If the interior door has good weather strip that will keep everything out. Then make sure you have some air flow. The air pushing in or out from the side door quickly flushes out one way or the other. The smell and the clear over spray goes out pretty fast.

@@waynegrosvenor9699 The way I understand it is each type of thinner has different dry times or are effected by humidity and temp. I could be wrong im just going by what the manufacturer recommends. Rustoleum recommends on the back of the can to thin with acetone. I have seen others use mineral spirits, reducer, and paint thinner. Rustoleum is an oil based or enamel paint yes. For me in the hot humid climate I live in the mix works great. The flaws in this video were user error from being new to automotive painting. Also I never added flake to that big a project. I have some furniture I did in one of my playlist that was done over a year ago. Its clearcoated and shinny as the day I painted it. My kids are ruff on it and no flaking or damage has occurred. After another retry I got the flake done right on the truck front clip but couldn't match the next panel since I did not measure and was not using full coverage. Since the paint is going to be thicker it may or may not change. The catalyst is added 1 can per gallon of paint. I used 2 ounces for a 4 to 2 mix which seemed to work out well. Try 2 oz of catalyst on a test piece to see how quickly it dries. This may effect laying the clear over if your trying to use the times I did in my videos. In my opion I would use less paint and more acetone if I were to try another mix. The thicker the paint longer it takes to dry and more peal if it dries faster then it flattens. Good luck 👍

If you use the same details as layer out in the video where I mentioned the mistakes and how I fixed them the only thing needed will be a cut a buff there will be some peal from covering the flake. If you are new to flake or shooting vehicles the angles make it tougher then shooting a flat surface. Test your setup first on something metal then go for it. Do the whole thing in one shot and keep very precise measure of the amount of flake used so you can match things later.
