In this video I correct the issues which caused the gun to clog, the runs, and the stripes. So here is the deal, in my first attempt to spray metal flake in clear coat I went to heavy with the flake coat. I was watching the flake and not the clear. I also did not have enough flake in the clear which forced me to use more clear laying it on to thick. The gun also clogged with the 1.8 tip so I ended up with some stripes on the hood. I ordered a 2.0 tip which did solve the clog issue then added more flake to the mix allowing one heavy fast pass which gave me exactly what I wanted and expected. I am by no means a professional painter. I am learning just like most of you. As long as I am able to resolve my issues and end up with good results I have nothing to complain about. Its all part of the process. I had fun learning and now have a solid plan to finish the rest of the cab. After the rustoleum paint job is complete I will start the air suspension install, stay tuned. Using top coat clear with the flake/pearl in it can cause runs in the flake/pearl. It is beneficial to use an intercoat clear for mixing in flakes and pearls because it dries faster locking it in before it gets a chance to move.

@@thisoldhooptie definitely. I have used top coat clear as a carrier before and had good luck, and I have also done the same and the pearl ran and collected thicker in crevices. Still looks great!

Thats exactly what happened first go round. This was the second video. I was watching the flake build instead of the clear and bam run/sags. This time I loaded up on the flake and slowed things down a bit. I still need to wet sand then flow coat for me to be happy. Its been fun learning.

You are to be commended for learning to DIY painting. Not many folks would attempt this. I am about to start a project and was also going to use Rustoleum and also wanted to use clear but read many times that clear will react with it especially if the clear is painted before the Rustoleum cures but you have proven this to not necessarily be the case. Thank you so much for doing this video. Very much appreciated! Very nice job.

Thank you 👍 Just make sure to do the whole car in one shot and it will come out perfect. It's very hard to match panels after the fact if you are new to painting and don't keep very accurate notes on exactly how much flake went in. That was my one mistake. I will re do things with everything I learned and it should be perfect. In the mean time it's back to black for a bit. Live and learn 😁

As you will find out in the next video on this truck,I ended up going all black for a bit to give me more time to practice with flake and perl. You should have no problem with a single color. I will be testing what I have learned later this year with orange perl over white on the s10. The now black truck is doing great more to come when time permits. Family first always! Good luck with your truck 👍

looks good. nice work so far. I've done a few paint jobs with Rust-Oleum as the base. Rust-Oleum needs time to cure (gas off) even with hardner. Being an enamel it shrinks as it dries. once dry you should wetsand the base coat smooth. This will get rid of most OP in your top coats and give it more depth with the clear. It will also make for less work in the final wetsand and buff.

Its a great setup my furniture came out amazing same paint and clear used. That video is in my house playlist. Im new to painting trucks so figured I would rather waste a bunch of rustoleum then single stage at 2 or 3 times the price per gallon. I have a turbine setup, as well. I did a lot of research before buying it and the main thing I found is that you need to use slow reducers/activators to help minimize orange peel. It looks like you're using medium activator on a hot day. My clear laid down very well using slow activator and shooting during the cooler hours of the day.

@MyProjectLife mine worked out perfect for me as a hobbyist working in my garage. I have since built a larger garage and added a big compressor, guns, etc. There's a lot more selection in guns. But I've also been dealing with moisture in lines, fisheye, etc. So there are trade-offs with both. I still have the turbine setup and plan to use it for projects away from the shop. I can get equally good finish with both, provided I do my part. Love the content, man! I just sub'd! I plan on doing a project car in rustoleum (catalyzed) and speedokote 2k this summer. Maybe I'll post some content one of these days.

@@mccoma11 you can eliminate nearly all moisture from your lines by installing a water separator next to the compressor and draining the tank daily. If that does not fit into the budget and you need to paint, you can get a disposable water filter that screws on to the end of the gun where the air line attaches and they do a good job of catching any water right before it hits the gun. I have used these alone without the separator at the compressor with great success but change the filter every time you paint. They are about $5 each. It will make a huge difference in your painting tho while not breaking the bank

Put the hose around your arm and up over your back or close to you in the front that way there's no chance of dragging the hose across the fresh paint.. The paint will last just fine. However without the hardner or any clear it will fade a bit in a year if you are in a sunny state and it sits outside. Nothing you can't buff and polish right out. As long as the primer is done right, the top coats of rustoleum will be just fine. Mine is shown in the background of a bunch of videos over the last year sitting out front in the Florida sun 7 days a week. I just wanted it one color until I have time to redo the flake. First test with the stripes i used 3 teaspoons of flake which gave a nice dark mix of black and the flake. This test i used more flake as shown due to wanting more of a purple glitter effect hiding more of the black. The doors and cab are not done yet as I was working out the amounts to use and testing spraying the clear on non cured paint in these videos. I will be testing one more time on a smaller piece, probly the tail gate with slow activator clear to see if I can get a nicer finish for less sanding. I used medium activator these last two times. Once I have the activator figured out then I can paint the whole truck. As explained I have never painted a truck or car so this is a learning process of trial and error.

Thanks for sharing this process! I have only seen one other guy on YT doing this sort of thing. I actually tried it out myself on some parts recently with pretty decent results. Next we are going to try to do my brothers Comanche. We mixed 2 spoons of black flake with 2 spoons of black pearl and 1 of red flake. The first part sprayed was surprisingly heavy on the red flake (seemed to have settled initially) but got better as we went. Primed, black over the primer, strait to the clear (once dry, no sanding)like you did. I'm wondering if I can just skip the base step if my primer is tinted to what my base color would be? No sanding, strait to intercoat once dried? I think I'm going to try the speedokote intercoat product this next time (3500lv) and I spoke to their tech guy who recommended their $200 glamour clear for top coating flakes & pearls. May try that as well or their cheaper $90 glamour clear. I'm also glad to hear it seems to be holding up so far.

Your on the right track. I had an issue matching months later due to my own error of a not being exact and b not doing full coverage of the flake. I have since gone back to black and will be redoing the flake. The front clip held up fine out in the sun for 7 months. Im redoing the purple once I have the truck back together. You can see how it shined right up when polished in one of my videos where i detailed my error. I have also thought about doing the intercoat 3500. Let me know how that test turns out. As for primers I have had better luck with rustoleum right to the metal seems to stick better. At least thats with the cheap 1k primers. Never used 2k so couldn't say how that would hold up.

@@thisoldhooptie was just thinking rustoleum primer as I'm not trying to switch back and forth between urethane and rustoleum more than needed. The idea came about as I was asking a group about custom mixing base colors with rustoleum. A guy said he had his mixed strait into primer cause he wanted a flat finish. He said I could have the tint mixed into gloss white also. We're going to do a neon lime green with a color shift pearl intercoat, then color shift flake and possibly a pinch of lime green flake (recommended by didspade to not mix them all in one coat but to spray pearl then flake). The other guy that was playing with flake and pearl just mixed it all like I did. Its my brothers daily driver and part time off roader so mainly want something that lasts and is fancier than just rustoleum but not as expensive as car paint. So you think bare metal (sanded with 180) with my color base and no primer then intercoat then clear holds up best?

I always do 220 or 320 under paint. I agree swapping back and forth could be asking for trouble. Gotta get the adheasion just right or it can have bonding issues. If the whole truck is bare metal priming would probly be best. For me I am just covering sanding breakthrough and the cheap primer gave me issues flaking off under the rustoleum paint. When I repaired that I sprayed the black right on the metal. I believe the issue is I use catalyst which really beefs up the rustoleum. The primer is 1k and weaker. For reference my truck has been sitting in the 100 deg sun for months with no trouble, chipping, or fading. Most of my rustoleum knowledge relates to indoor furniture use. Flake and perl included. This truck is my first try doing a whole vehicle. For the perl yes its flake in clear or intercoat, then clear, then perl in clear, then more clear to lock it in. I almost did the silver flake then color shift perl but my daughter liked the purple flake better so ran with it.

@@thisoldhooptie I used the same hardener (in the rustoleum base) and clear as you. Didn't use it in the primer. His current bed is rusted through on both sides so we just picked up a donor. But the donor appears to have some light rust too and the main cab needs some patches so kinda thinking taking it all to bare might be best (the rust came from under the factory paint, boils up underneath). Can you add the hardened to the rusto-primer so it doesn't suck so much? Hearing you say the primer seems like the weak link makes me doubt using it. Which would be cheaper anyway. Real new to all this, have had a lot of rattle can not hold up on bumpers and stuff so trying to be diligent in getting it right (even though its dry here in Colorado). Had hoped the hardeners and 2k clear would be the trick but time will tell. Btw didspade says pearls before flakes for whatever that's worth.

@@forum8fox Activating the primer is something I have not tried. I know rustoleum has a stop rust flat paint "Rust-Oleum 7769502 Protective Enamel Paint Stops Rust, 32-Ounce, Flat Rusty Metal Primer" look for a quart of that stuff. I would try activating a quart of that with the same catalyst and see what happens. If you have snow and salted roads you need all the help you can get. Im in FL so nothing but sun and rain here. The perl statement is strange. When laying flake it would totally cover the perl. If you use perls over flake they tint the clear making a new color over the flake. The flake would hide the perl if it is over it. Have a look at lowrider painting videos they use tons of perl and flake.
