Rustoleum Countertop Transformation - DID IT LAST? (5 MONTH UPDATE) | DIY Bathroom Makeover

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Did I pique your interest on the Rustoleum Countertop Transformation? Welcome back to the UPDATE of my DIY Bathroom Makeover Series! In this video, I am sharing a Rustoleum Countertop Transformation UPDATE!
In the first video I showed you how I transformed the bathroom countertop using the Rustoleum Appliance Epoxy Spray! For $7 this was an AMAZING transformation! Now I am going to share an UPDATE and how it has been holding up!
Don't forget to hit SUBSCRIBE! If you'd like to see the $100 DIY Bathroom Makeover series, I have linked all of those videos below!

We're just getting started on DIY'S and projects! I (again) have shared the steps below and included some tips and tricks I learned along the way. I hope this update helps you and give some insight to how it has held up for us, it's amazing what a $7 can of Epoxy Spray can do!
1.Clean countertops with a surface cleaner and a towel. (I used Mrs. Meyers)
2. Sand the countertop, you want to rough it up so the spray has something to adhere to. I used 100 grit sandpaper.
3.Using a damp cloth wipe off dust. Then go over again with a microfiber towel or cheesecloth to remove any dust or particles left behind. I did this twice just to be sure everything was cleaned off!
4. Turn on any vents / a house fan/ and open windows! This spray is strong! I HIGHLY recommend using a mask while spraying!
5. Mask off walls/cabinet/toilet/faucet etc. The overspray is thick! I cannot recommend green FROG TAPE enough! It's a great product!
6. Spray 1st coat, if puddles or drips happen just wipe off quickly with a clean cloth and respray. Let the first coat dry for 15 minutes.
7. Spray 2nd coat. Allow drying for 3-4 hours. I removed masking tape/plastic after 3. I didn't use sink/water or set anything on counters for close to 48 hours just to be safe though :)
8. Enjoy your new countertops! I clean mine regularly with surface cleaner :)

Based on your video I did our double vanity countertops and here is my experience. First, this spray paint really disperses in small areas, so my suggestion is to cover everything with plastic. This includes doorknobs, floors, light fixtures, tub, toilet, etc. It took me two days to clean up with a paint remover and a scrub pad. Second, make sure you sand really well. Do it two to three times and make sure the surface feels coarse, not smooth. If you don't, the paint will NOT stick and you will see paint bubbles. This is hard to cover and does not look good. Do three to four coats, but let partially dry in between applications. Once completely dry I used a Rustoleum clear high gloss application to give it a nice finish. For us, this is a stop-gap until we have the funds to do a complete bathroom makeover. I am hoping it will last a couple years.

I actually use Rustoleum x 2 spray paint and painted my sink spout and handles & the drain! They turned out PHENOMENAL! It has been 4 years and they still look fantastic! I use bleach, awesome & all types of cleaner and they have never chipped or faded what so ever! I painted them a nickel color!

As an advice I'll say if you spray paint this counter tops with spray paint epoxy or any other to make it last longer you need to spray clear coat on top of it like epoxy clear coat. That will protect the surface much better.

ziggilypiggily no problem! Also i sanded my surface slightly with fine grit sandpaper and then applied the spray. You will need ventilation or a mask as it has a potent smell. I did two coats. Theres alot of white dust from the product so i did have to wipe down pretty much the whole bathroom afterwards. For the price and durability so far its been worth it.- I found the appliance epoxy very sticky to work with.

I would add two things.... yes sand the area down but then I would try to take out any loose paint by trying to lift the area with my finger nail to make sure that what's left is adhering well to the surface. When finished with any spray paint it's good to hold it upside down and give it a little spray it for a few seconds. That prevents the nozzle from getting clogged and keeps it ready for the next time it's needed.

I think the reason you are seeing it chip in some spots (sink left side) is becouse the epoxy spray that you use is not meant for bathroom coutertops. It's actually meant to be used on metal surfaces. Therefore the better product to use is Rust-Oleum Specialty Tub & Tile Aerosol.

Thanks Valerie for this, it is helpful and very convenient. We tried and we got some suggestions and I would like to share. 1. think carefully whether you want to use indoors, because the fume in definitely toxic and lasts longer than you think. If you are someone who really cares about your indoor air quality, you don't want to use it. 2. Cover floor also, because the spray will be everywhere. 3. I don't know how to clean this kind of material, e.g. if the real countertop gets dirty, I can use bleach or all-purpose cleaner, etc, I can use a brush. But with this material on it, I don't know when it gets dirty, how shall I clean it. 4. It is painting and it's obvious actually, if you care, just change a countertop or whole vanity. So I personally am a bit regret of doing that actually, just some suggestions in case anyone is hesitating. But it could also be that I was not good at doing it. Just for a reference.

I just did this to my bathroom countertop tonight. It all went went until I obsessed over the smallest imperfection a few hours after I applied the epoxy. I sanded the spot down and put a light coat over the countertop and then a crackled/bubbled look began to form. It looked so perfect and shiny the first time around, I should have just left it. Do you have any suggestions for how to fix it? should I re-sand the entire countertop and at what grit? And how long should I wait to fix this?

You are not supposed to do additional coats after 30 minutes or it will bubble. It says on the can when you can recoat.

Help. I sprayed my vanity this morning and noticed drip spots after it felt dry to the touch. I sanded those spots lightly and just spot sprayed those areas. Now those spots are wrinkled up. Do I just need to wait several days for it to cure and then sand and hit those areas with touch up paint?

Just reading this comment now but wanted to add in case anyone else sees. From what I’ve seen in other videos, it’s SUPER important to do recoats/touch ups within 30 minutes or you have to wait a full week to do another coat. After 30 minutes and before one week you will get wrinkling because of the phase the epoxy is in drying wise I guess.

I did mine about 3 days ago and although I loved the results, I must say it was so hard to breathe and the paint smell is still in my bathroom and carried over into my adjacent bedroom. I turned vent on, open windows in bedroom (no window in bathroom), ran fans but still no luck. How long did the paint smell last? Any recommendations on how to get that smell to go away?

Just because you mention you wanted a fix for 1-2 years but it looks like started to peal after 5 months and the fact that is a high traffic area with lots of humidity due to running water.

Hi, according to Sherwin Williams 80% of bubbles or flaking is lack of adhesion. Good adhesion is all about preparation which would include sanding and wiping with paint thinner prior to apply paint. I hope this helps.

I would replace the toilet. You can find good one at Home Depot or Lowe’s for less than $200. Also if you have a pastel pink toilet, I think it is an old model that uses a lot of water. You will be saving water if you buy a new model. Their water tank is smaller than older models.
