Russian River Sockeye Salmon

Headed back to the Russian River to try for some more salmon. They have raised the limit to 9 (was only 3 in my last video).

If you don't mind me asking, what length of leader and weights were you using? I've fished the Kenai, but I haven't tried the Russian yet and was wondering lenghth of leader/weight. I have a 9wt rod. Thanks!

Currently the limit is 9. www.adfg.alaska.gov/sf/EONR/index.cfm?ADFG=region.NR&Year=2023&NRID=3539. Make sure you check the regulations for the river/location that you plan on fishing.

You have to "snag" the fish in the mouth. I'm going to be posting a video Friday morning talking about this as well as how I rig my rod.

I want to ask you; Have you, or anyone reading along in the comments, ever run a sinking fly line instead of the typical mono weighted with sinkers/weights.? Growing up, I did a lot of mountain lake and stream fishing for Brookies, Browns, and ‘Bows. Early season we would run nymphs off a sinking line drifted down stream in much the same manner as we here bounce our weights during the drift. I don’t know what percentage of advantage this would lend, except to say I could possibly see a couple things that “might” serve well. First, I see the entire line sinking parallel with the bottom. I envision this giving a long level plane of line, flossing level with the runners….as opposed to the sinker on mono creating a V shape in the water with a semi level plane from that stretch of leader from the weight to the hook - maybe 6 to 7 feet worth. And secondly, a petite leader to line knot would be the only “bump” in the rigging. No swivel and gob of sinkers to interfere with hook sets, bouncing the line out of the fish’s mouth, and seemingly finding every snag along the bottom. Thoughts .?

I only run sinking fly line with mono leader. I feel your hand don't get cut up as much.

I use sinking lines regularly while fishing on the Kenai, primarily with a spey rod. The main issue I see is having to pair the sinking line to the water conditions at the time you are fishing. The flow rate of the water and the depth would matter a lot more with the sinking line than a weight. I might try a weighted line on the second run and see what happens.

@@AlaskaLivingToday I appreciate that. Yes indeed the velocity as well as the depth would make a sinking line a bit of a challenge. Like you, I might give it a go and just see. Thanks for the reply.! 👍

I use a full sink line 88ft then connected to 200 yards of backing line. My leader is a mono 30 lbs test using the loop knot to a join the two halves together. Last was at the borrow of Russian right where that fillet table is on that left inside then it joins at the top of the confluence. Never used any split shots size 2 or 3. Just the sink line and caught so many there lol. Water was slow enough.

All sockeye in rivers are caught by snagging. They do not feed once they enter the fresh water.

When you fish this river, and any Alaskan river with other fishermen working the river beside you, it becomes prudent (and expected) that you have tackle capable of managing your fish where you are standing…that over the others head maneuver and chasing your fish up and down stream is kinda frowned upon. Run some 25/30 lb test on a medium heavy or 10wt. and haul them in to where you’re standing. Also kind of a bullshit move cursing landed fish because you’re frustrated with you foul hooking…get your rigging on the bottom where they are and you won’t foul hook so many. You should be bouncing your sinker on the bottom (and occasionally get snagged on a rock).

I was running an 8/9 weight with 30lb fly line and 25 and 20 mono. Foul hooking a fish from time to time is just part of the process for this style of fishing. A foul hooked fish in swift water is going to do what it wants and you are along for the ride. I’ve never been mad at another angler that was in that situation. If you watched the video you will see that I hauled plenty in from right where I was standing. My cursing had nothing to do with foul hooking a fish. It had to do with the amount of fish I was hooking that had giant chunks missing from them (likely seals from the looks of it).

@@AlaskaLivingToday Well I want to tell you that you did a Great job fielding my questions (as I re-read what I posted it honestly seems more like accusations than questions😊). I was taught to stand in your spot and play the fish on the rivers when they are crowded - either we win and land them, OR, they break off…but I’m to stay where I’m standing. However that said. If it was just you and I fishing I would be more than happy to get out of your way and let you play your fish. Thanks again for such a level headed response and answers. I was there on Thursday at a spot I like to call “Bear Hole.” There wasn’t much running that day, folks had a lot of empty stringers from the confluence onward upstream. I was fortunate enough to hook and land 2 nice Sockeye - and I avoided being harassed by the momma blackie or her cubs. Also wanted to day “nice camera work.!” The footage is clear and offer an excellent depiction of the river and terrain. My best to you.!

No problem. Your “accusations” were less offensive than some I have received lol. I was down there on Thursday night with a few friends. My buddy got 3 in and hooked quite a few more. I was just on the camera that night. That video is going to be posted Tuesday morning. A lot less running up and down river in that video 😀

@@AlaskaLivingToday Are you fishing the later run, say mid July.? If so, I’ll look for you. It would be a pleasure to meet you and your buddy, your crew. I’ve usually got a cold refreshment or two in the cool back at my truck I could offer after a full day working the river. I just watched your recent tutorial, nice presentation. 👍
