That's the beauty that you don't have to be younger to move to Russia. You can now be free from looking for employment ( I don't want to be presumptuous) , but instead, could be retired in Russia. I.e, never say never. Travel first, decide later. Visa wise one can be living continuously for 6 months ( think of American 's snow birds, 6 months in Slovenia ,6 months in Russia). Expesialy, when one doesn't have to fly from one continent to another changing planes and enduring layover to boot.

I dare to list some classic dishes on the Russian New Year's table. Salads from the USSR: Olivier (a 10-liter bowl - you can eat it for 2 weeks), Mimosa, Venegret, Caesar, herring under a fur coat. Further dishes such as mashed potatoes, baked potatoes with meat in pots, jellied meat with Russian thermonuclear mustard “pluck your eyes out” (just 1 gram of Russian mustard on the tip of a knife and your eyes are already rolling on the floor), fried chicken legs, Russian pickles (tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbage, mushrooms, Korean carrots). Sandwiches on rye bread with butter and red caviar or sprats, sliced meat, salami, boiled pork, balyk, lard, a ring of homemade rural fried sausage (in a private home this is almost always obligatory shashalik and fish baked in foil over a fire), large baked chopped fish, duck. Drinks - Pinocchio lemonade, Tarragon, sparkling mineral water, compote, vodka (cognac, homemade moonshine), champagne, wine. Children must have tangerines, nuts, dates, pineapple, bananas, chocolates, cake for everyone with tea for dessert (often this is a real or decorative electric samovar). I think my list is 60% true for the traditional Russian New Year's table, which has roots in the USSR.

I miss the xmas decorations that we used to have, so I'm a bit jealous of the beautiful decorations in Russia. It used to be here in Canada, but because of the government trying to please all the religious sects they have forgotten Xmas.

New year is non-religous holiday, that's why decorations in Russia won't offend anyone. Xmas is strictly religous though but New Year decorations are there on 25 dec and 7 Jan (Orthdox Xmas). So the vibe is in place on both Xmases.

Beautiful family, beautiful celebration! Glad to see Americans do well in Russia - nice, modern and spacious apartment, table full of good food, all the latest equipment in the kitchen etc. Russian New Year holidays just came to an end. They start on December 31 with New Year's eve celebration, continue the next day or a couple of days (depending on how much food was prepared for New Year). On the 6th of January is Russian Orthodox Christmas Eve, 7th is a Christmas day. And finally the holidays end with the old style New Year celebration, January 13-14 as it was celebrated before Russia switched to Gregorian calendar after Bolshevik revolution in 1917. Many people take two weeks off work during this time, actually most of the country slows down as it takes a winter break.

As for 🍊 ...the story is that first mandarines appeared in the USSR period 1933-1937 years . Laventy Pavlovich Berria , the second person after Stalin of that time (he was ethnic 🇬🇪 )was the man who brough these fruits to Soviet Russia cause of the biggest harvest in 🇬🇪 itself . Firstly ,they were sold by one 🍊 only later by kilos . 🍊 became symbol of new year because it was nearly impossible to buy them and the harvest of them is actually the winter season . I remember from my childhood that I ate them only in winter time and there was one in the New Year's gift box . Usually, they were brought from Abhazia or 🇬🇪 . Now it's Morocco and Abhazia

Holodets and Salo usually should go with a piece of bread. You bite a piece of bread after a fork of Holodets or put a piece of Salo on a piece of bread. It neutralizes this slick consistence of these "dishes". I've never seen foreigners trying those this way, for some reason.

Я ещё не ложился спать, по этому напишу на русском, так проще😅 По большей части, ананас на столе, это признак богатого стола в СССР и ранней России, сейчас, конечно, купить ананас в любом виде стоит буквально пару баксов, но в 70-80-90, он мог стоить 40-50 баксов за штуку (по крайней мере, так мне рассказал отец), а Мандарины были его очень дешёвым заменителем. Под новый год их привозили из Абхазии, Грузии и других частей СССР (которые стали просто соседними странами, после его развала). Плюс, в центральной России, зима длится 4-5 месяцев, а мандарины стоят очень дёшево и прекрасно восполняют недостаток витаминов, что в таком климате очень важно)

Для жителей других стран, а также просто не знакомых с бытом в СССР и России, стоит также добавить, что красная икра, красная рыба, креветки, да и большинство морепродуктов, это не совсем дёшево, но и нельзя сказать, что дорого. Банка хорошей красной икры (где-то 250 грамм), стоит около 1500 рублей или 15-17 баксов (в зависимости от курса). Мой отец каждый год покупает целую форель (приблизительно 2-3кг), а потом засаливает её сам (это просто нереально вкусно), стоит такая рыба 3-4000 рублей или же около 45 баксов. Зимой, столько же может стоить купить арбуз (один арбуз, если большой) или же набор овощей и фруктов на стол (3-5 персон). Вся проблема в том, что растёт это все в южных регионах страны, а в Москву, к примеру, ехать из них, не менее 1500 километров, отсюда и такие цены)

Проблема иностранцев с холодцом заключается в том, что они ассоциируют холодец именно с желе. А желе, как правило это сладкий продукт. Поэтому им сложно понять. Лучше ассоциировать холодец с тушёнкой, холодная тушёнка это почти тот же холодец.

I'd say that xolodnoe should be understood as another potential to use of hash . Hash is a hot state of what xolodnoe will became after hash is let go cold and refrigerated after. Ie all comes from super concentrated broth made of protein ( deferent meat and bones) and simmered for a very long time. Armenian eat hash ( hot soup). Russians make xolodnoe based on hash .
