Russian mines make Ukrainian fields unfarmable | Focus on Europ

Ukrainian farmers cannot cultivate their land. The Russians have buried so many mines that it is too dangerous to use heavy equipment for sowing. Many fear for their livelihood.

Maybe if you strip a metal detector down to search coil and electronic pcb you could fly one on a drone. If you can use a solonoid to spray a spraycan you could mark possible mines as you go. If you can use a hi-res camera on a drone with coordinates maybe you can get people online to spot the butterfly mines. .. It would be good to photo the fields before the mines weather in or get obscured by plants.

The sheer amount of approving and cheering comments by ordinary Russians under videos about the atrocities committed against civilians and prisoners of war in Ukraine were no less shocking to Ukrainians than the war itself. We somehow got used to the war, but the realization of who we have been living next to all this time without even knowing it is still terrifying. Those barbarians called themselves our brothers. Imagine what they would do to you, who they call their enemies, if you let them. Not supplying weapons to Ukraine under the pretext of achieving an early peace would be like allowing a violator to violate his victim in order to end the violence as soon as possible.

What is a synonym for the word sovereign? Some common synonyms of sovereign are autonomous, free, and independent. While all these words mean "not subject to the rule or control of another," sovereign stresses the absence of a superior power and implies supremacy within a thing's own domain or sphere. As spring has arrived in Ukraine, farmers should be planting their crops, as wheat, corn, barley, and other crops supply much of the world's food. In fact, before Russia attacked Ukraine, they supplied 10% of the world's wheat, 15% of the corn market, and 13% of the barley market. With more than 50% of world trade, Ukraine was also the main player on the sunflower oil market. However, in all of the currently and former occupied territories of Ukraine, Russia has heavily mined those fields and cities with a variety of very lethal anti-personnel and anti-material mines, making this country the most heavily mined part of the planet since WWII. Experts say it will take decades to clear, and in the meantime it will kill many civilians, most of which will be children. So in the meantime, farmers have two choices, to go broke and parts of the world including themselves to starve because they cannot plant a crop, or risk entering their fields and perhaps be blown up, as a number of farmers have already been.

Yes it can, but the problem is scale, normally it takes an entire of fleet of thousands of civilian tractors just to plow all those fields every year, so to demine them you would need to somehow convert most of the surviving tractor fleet to use such flails, (make a couple thousand flails to use) and even then the process could take a couple of years... TLDR, Mines are big problem with no equally big solution.

Ukraine is destined to lose lot of territory & lot of farmland. Zelensky would have had sovereignty over entire territory with Minsk Agreement by giving autonomy to its Russian speaking Donbas but foolishly banned even Russian language in schools & offices along with persecution of ethnic Russians as a tactic to join NATO & please US. Zelensky’s foolish attack on Kerch Bridge was denied by him but celebrated by issuing postal- stamp. That only made importance of additional land corridor needed by Russia to protect Crimea which led to annexation of Ukraine's 4 Oblasts into Russia. Zelensky’s recent attack on Crimean oil facility which he again denied but cleverly celebrated by depicting Hindu Goddess of destruction Kali in very objectionable manner. That has now highlighted need of Russia to seek at least 50 km broad sanitized demilitarized corridor to protect annexed Oblasts. Russian strikes all over Ukraine along with occupation of northern Ukrainian as bargain for sanitized corridor is likely to bring about next round of Kali-type destruction of Ukraine or else Kali's final dance of total destruction with tactical nukes.

Both sides use mines. And the Ukrainians mined not only the fields, but also the cities. According to the UN - The Commission has found instances where Ukrainian armed forces likely used cluster munitions and rocket-delivered antipersonnel landmines to carry out attacks in Izium city, Kharkiv region, from March to September 2022, when it was controlled by Russian armed forces. According to Human Rights Watch - "Ukrainian troops widely scattered land mines in the Izyum region, which caused the death of civilians and constant risk. The Russian military distributed leaflets warning about the danger of "Lepestok" mines. About a hundred local residents told about this. They were engaged in clearing mines in public places and on territories of private property of the civilian population, they took away the victims of mine explosions to Russia for medical assistance," Human rights activists stressed that the actions of the Russian servicemen "are incompatible with the responsibility for planting these mines." HRW investigated the use of anti-personnel mines in Izyum from 19 September to 9 October. Employees of the organization interviewed more than a hundred people, including witnesses, victims, rescuers, doctors and sappers. Human rights activists have identified the use of "Lepestok" in nine different districts of the city and its environs. The organization has confirmed 11 civilian deaths due to landmines. According to doctors, about 50 people were injured, including five children. According to the DPR authorities, the Ukrainian army uses the same "Lepestok" mines for deliberate remote mining of cities in the DPR, for example, Donetsk. According to the DPR, more than a hundred civilians were blown up by these mines.
