I can tell you as a former tank crew member myself that we would NEVER advance without combat engineers, supporting infantry, close air support and advancing mobile artillery. We trained in the deserts for years to act s one cohesive unit. The Ukrainian never stood a chance.

And yet, tanks are still EVERYWHERE on the battlefield...so what is wrong with this equation? Hate to break it to you, but artillery has taken out FAR more tanks and other equipment than drones. And drones are very easy to counter. That is already happening over large portions of the front, and those countermeasures will be more and more available as time goes on.

Russia does not have any advanced tanks. That is shown on the battle field. Russia's advance weapons consist of T54's and T55 getting new sights. Russia uses the old frames on all of their new tanks. Just a new paint job. Just remember, for every mine clearing tank lost Ukraine has broken the Russian defenses. This is war and their will be losses. Russia cannot replace their equipment. Russia is building new trucks? Why, they do not have anything to put in them except more cannon fodder. Once they are on Ukrainian soil they are destroyed. Russia focuses on old western weapons. The reason they persist is because they are the best weapon system in an environment that would slaughter everything else even faster. The reason to replace them would be to find a better weapon systems doing their job, not because another weapon system exist that can fight them. People saying that have little to no understanding on the history of warfare. The tanks struggle because they fight in the most averse conditions possible. What is your alternative? Infantry attacks: Would be slaughtered by the thousands. Armored cars. Slaughtered by the hundreds. Drones? What are those gonna do? They should cancel the order of 52 Leopard 2A8, and further option for 18 more. British Challenger 2 is the future of tanks, a way better alternative in my opinion. Nobody with a brain said that. HIMARS was, to a large degree, though. If we ever put any REAL weapons in there, it would, I can guarantee you that. Even just Storm Shadow is doing real damage. Russian weapons are crap. Just one example, the US top drone can fly the Maine to Moscow leg three times, unrefueled, and still have gas in the tank. Russia gets all orgasmic over a stupid Iranian drone that sounds like a lawnmower and flies a minuscule portion of that range, and they can't even build it.

Yes, I heard that too and that a lot of unexploded ammunition is laying around……. So, of course, when Ukrainians run over that ammunition it will blow up and badly damage the tank, if not destroy it.

If you are going on offense. You are going to take losses. It doesn't matter if its a Western tank or not. A mine, ATGM, or artillery is going to wreck a tank. The difference is a Western tank gives the crew a better chance of survival, hence they can get another tank and back in the fight. So yeah, UAF will lose a LOT of Western tanks, but the crews will survive and theyll fight again.

Some of the reasons these or other tanks get destroyed is how they are deployed. In conflicts, tanks are used in conjunction with other tactics that provide support and or protection to tanks. And when these tactics are not used, you have a greater percentage of tank loss. The Leopard tank's are great tank's when used correctly. Or any armor vehicles for that matter.

Nato ground forces is europe is amounted up to 600 tanks most of them unmaintained and outdated. They dont have artillery shells left. They have airforce, but airforce only works against someone with no decent airdefence. Russia has pretty decent airforce themselves and they will sink nato airforce if they do massive charge. US is the only factor when it comes to ground forces and they are on the other side of ocean. If they try to ship their weapons russia will target and sink those ships with their subs and intercontinental ballistic missiles and long range hypersonic missiles. Nato is a papper army. They have at most 150k troops combat ready in europe out of which most have not seen combat. Russia still has plenty of weapons left. Many nato generals outright admitted they cant find Russia on their own ground. Nato is more of political organisation rather than a military. Only problem with nato is that US can strategically place their airdefence and nuclear capable striking systems in other countries. Russia if only afraid of that, not conventional might of nato. Because while impressive it cant take on Russia. We saw how well Nato tactics went in Ukraine. They trained ukrainian troops and equiped them with nato weapons and it got battered in 2 weeks. Because you simply cant fight nato style maneuver warfare against russia. They will detect and target you.

What a load of bollocks! Only 5 confirmed leopards destroyed with no crew deaths. The challenger (which can run on diesel, it’s a multi fuel engine) is a significantly more capable tank than the leopards that have been sent. You’re also way off in your estimate of the number of tanks sent.

It would be interesting how Leclerc would perform in Ukraine battle. Hopefully, france will provide their tanks to Ukraine. Its lighter, smaller and more mobile and has auto loader.

The idea of a tank during WW I and II was a heavy armored vehicle with enormous firepower to break through German defense lines. Back then it worked, but nowadays there are many deadly threats. Perhaps they will again play the decisive role when a new, tougher type of armor is developed

Several sources reported on 30th of August that Ukraine lost five Leopard 2s altogether and did not lose a single crewman.

A Tank needs the adequate supporting security. So it’s useless the way they use it

Those tanks were lost cuz not properly used, without cover. You ll lose whatever you use if you dont use it properly, that speaks 0 about the tank performance. Same as if you put messi as goalkeeper

If the tanks serve their purpose and the crews survived than there's really nothing to report. This is war, things get destroyed. Question is who employs their hardware best. If the Ukrainians were able to punch through, or hold off the enemy then a destroyed tank is a bummer, but not a loss.

I wonder would the tactics was by seeing all those Bradley's and one Leopard standing next to each other...

A simple drone could squirt sticky closed cell foam all over the front of the Russian tanks, blinding them and knocking them out for a short while... You don't have to explode armor to disable tanks, just blind them or immobilize them, and then they are less of a threat.

The lack of air power has severely hindrance Ukraine in counter offensive.

The day of the main battle tank is over. Period. Total waste of money.

Nop. Some Leopards have been destroyed. The majority did even enter in combat. They are in the reserve brigades, waiting for a significant breakthrough between the Russians defensive lines.

This just shows how obsolete the tank is in modern warfare. Even a premium tank like the Leopard 2 struggles to survive and make a difference. Ships, Tanks, and Planes are too costly to risk unless you have overwhelming odds. Drones, drones, drones.

I heard that NATO has decided to withdraw all the remaining Leopard tanks to avoid any further humiliation. It would appear that the Russians have all but made the modern main battle tank obsolete. If they can destroy a Leopard 2 with ease on entering the battlefield area in such a short time, then they can destroy all NATO tanks in the same fashion.

You (me and everyone else) know VERY LITTLE about what´s going on in the TO. Details that can be independently verified are scarce and hard to obtain. Your opinion is based on no tanglible facts, only on what seems to be your day dreaming about Russian prowess on the TO. Tanks are here to stay, as they will remain to be invaluable tools on the field. Unsupported tanks, due to the lack of air supremacy against jets/helos and kamikaze drones will pay the toll with casualties on both gear and manpower. Which is happening on both sides. Tanks aren´t a magical bullet meant to be invincible and solve all TO issues. No platform/equipment works that way.

There are some reliable sources of information out there that you learn to trust based on their track record, you just have to look. Russia has the best integrated air defence system in the world, so not even NATO could gain air supremacy over the battlefield area in Ukraine. Ukraine is broken & beaten, it's time for them to throw in the towel, save lives, & sit down at the negotiating table with some reasonable proposals before they completely lose a generation of young men, & before this conflict escalates to WW3.

Ukraine is using 50 year old Soviet tanks to its advantage. The US has hundreds of 50 year old M-60 tanks in storage that could be put to good use in Ukraine at no cost to the US taxpayer. Ukrainian mechanics could be brought in and trained while getting these tanks into usable condition. Once running they could be turned over to a crew for training, this would serve as a breaking in period allowing for mechanical problems to be found early. Crews that excelled would become the trainers so that in a short time only a skeleton crew of US military would be required thus reducing cost to the US and preparing Ukraine to assume these tasks. As seen with the Leopard tank simpler design can have advantages on Ukraine’s battlefields allowing for local repairs. The M-60 saw heavy combat in the 1991 Gulf War in Kuwait, knocking out around 100 Iraqi tanks for the loss of a single Patton.

Good tanks are worthless if the tankers are not tactically sound. Tanking has similarities with the infantry. There are proper formations, using cover and concealment, bounding, fire patterns, near and far security.

those tactics were developed on the assumption that anti air systems makes aerial observation impossible for the enemy and there are no drones. those tactics are now obsolete . lone hit and run attacks of tanks is what works now like that lone russian tank who destroyed 8 Ukrainian armored vehicles

The best tank is the one that returns from the battlefield with the crew alive.

In todays lethal close combat hand held weapons warfare no matter how tech worthy or AI enabled safety gadgetry does one tank or armoured vehicle does have wheather leopard Abram-x T-91 or armata etcetera etcetera. No tank is completely safe at frontlines it could resist for time being but in close combat ambush scenario repeated strikes it will eventually give up like it or not it has its limitations and could survive only with or along side wid short range combat aviation or covering them well above ahead of tank formation

All the new technology has made tanks obsolete. 🤷‍♂️

Some people thought that these western things would be hit by 38 artillery shells and still be ok but that's not true western equipment if to keep the crew safe and A Ukraine said if I was not in the Bradly and if was in a Ukraine apc I would be dead right now also all of these things were taken off the field and were brought to Poland to be repaired.

NATO tanks have proven to be no better than older Soviet tanks.

I hope you are kidding. For one, the tank wouldn't move with that much weight on it, for another rock is a TERRIBLE material to use, from every standpoint. Lastly, there is no such thing as 'granite marble', as they are two different types of rock, formed in different ways.

For sure there are much more Leopards fighting,for example you have not mention Spanish Leopards send,but all them will be destroyed on a short term because there are two crucial factors against their deployment: Ucranian crews are not well trained in such a complex weapon system and Ucrania has NOT superiority both in artillery or "above battlefield air control" ,russians have.

And yet, the Russians are barely moving on one tiny single digit km wide part of the front and being pushed back on about 300 miles of it. Ukraine does have superiority in the capabilities of some artillery, but not remotely the amount, that much is true. On the other hand, the Russian/Ukrainian artillery rate was about 10:1 across the entire active front early on, and is more like 3:1 in almost all areas now, due to the Ukrainians constantly thwarting supply chains, like the two bridges (of four total) they just destroyed between the southern corridor, and Crimea. The Russians claimed that didn't matter...LOL. It will take a bit of time for that to really bear fruit, but it darn sure will. The Russians are already bitching about lack of artillery rounds in portions of that area.

@@MrJdsenior right,IMHO the key to win the war is artillery,the old "God of War",if Ucrania is able to obtain more "hardware" and above all,disrupt russian logistic,there will be a chance,but Russians are not stupid and they are just now working in some specific deficitary areas like safe comms,sat pinpointing,flexible doctrine and coordination troops-firings..but being honest without at least air parity,russian artillery and her deployment wil be more and more effective.

I have to scratch my head when I hear the (oft repeated) line that the Leopard "is capable of breaching Russian defense lines..." It's clearly not invulnerable, ISIS and the Kurds destroyed these tanks in Syria with roadside bombs and heavy machine guns. The side, rear and top armor are thin. An experienced tank gunner or antitank weapons crewman will be looking for a broadside or rear armor hit because of this. The roadwheels and/or track if destroyed will render the tank immobile. There's no such thing as a Wunderwaffe (wonder weapon), tanks require combined arms support and air superiority (which Ukraine has none of), without which, these things are just exceptionally vulnerable (and very expensive) targets. Remember that there's three or four crewmembers that are incinerated every time one of these things is (needlessly) destroyed.

Its the age of ISR.

Tanks and aircraft carriers are sitting ducks. Pearl harbor and the sinking of British Repulse, Prince of Wales, were hard lessons. Yesterday it was aircraft, today it's missiles. Do not be a huge fat, heavy target.

The Russians are pissed off at Ukrainian tractors 🤣.

I'm sorry man, it's not a ground maneuver, it's bullshit,as a former armorer in the IDF, I felt sorry for armorers who were killed in battle

As it can be seen, they did try to push with some tanks at the start of that big offensive but they were still searching for a weak spot. I guess they decided that it would be better to weaken russia's logistics as they do for some time now before a meaningfull push

That thing was in a field doing agricultural work in the middle of a battle zone lol. Sighted from many Km away with infrared, it's understandable it could've been mistaken for a military vehicle by an eager 20 year old Russian soldier with an itchy trigger finger lol. Poor farmer
