The newest Generation 3 version of Ratnik looks like a power ranger and claims to be able to stop a 50 BMG but before we unpack whether thats true or not we need to look at where this whole idea came from. Ratnik is important to study because this is one of the United States biggest potential threats and there might be something valuable we can learn and use ourselves from Russia's state of the art infantry modernization program.
#SOLDIER #ARMY #MILITARY
I don’t know about you but I’m noticing a pattern here. Every single major world power for the past decade has been working on a program similar to Ratnik. The US Forces have their Nett Warrior the French call it the Feline system and the British are working on the FIST program but no matter what odd name choice you go with they all have the same exact goal in common: connect the regular infantryman to all of the enhancements that the digital world has brought to other jobs. We’ve seen how recent technological advancements have completely changed the way pilots, artillery and tankers operate but at the same time all of those digital benefits seem to have eluded the infantry until now. Why is that? Is it because us ground pounders are complete idiots who can barely figure out how to send an email? Wait, don’t answer that.
The goal for Ratnik and indeed for all the worlds military forces right now is to figure out a way to get every soldier a GPS, a heads up augmented reality system, ballistic computer smart optics, new uniforms, and even some good old fashioned new hardware in the form of an upgraded primary weapon. Ratnik appears on the surface to check all the boxes. Another common denominator between the Ratnik program and the other military modernization programs around the world is they require the suite of systems to be easily adjusted based on a wide range of missions.
Throughout the modern era, Russia has a reputation for lagging behind its Western competitors in technical prowess, they’ve instead been relying on rugged simplicity, sheer numbers and a good old fashioned love for the motherland. Nostrovia. Not to mention they’ve had some help from their brutal Winters. From rifles to tanks, the history record of the Russia Military has proven time and time again that they know what they’re doing when it comes to designing effective military equipment based around the keep it simple stupid premise. But no one has ever accused them of being cutting edge. Ratnik may just prove the exception.

Do the Polish-Balarusian border. The new approach to the weaponizing of the emigrants Russia took from Syria and Iraq and carried onboard the Aeroflot planes to Minsk and from there escorted by Specnaz straight to the border. In my opinion this is meant to give the current Polish government a nice shiny look of defenders of the nation. Putin takes this measures because he know the longer PiS party rules in Poland the more chaotic the country becames. And he just saved them from premature elections...

I was a Marine platoon commander in Vietnam 1968-69. One of the first of many lessons I learned was to never ever underestimate your enemy. I agree when it comes to their soldiers but not their tech. Russian military suppliers routinely exaggerate their capabilities, even during the cold war. When defectors brought soviet jets to the west they often found out the jets weren't as good as the Soviets claimed or as good as the west originally thought. Doesnt mean we shouldn't plan for the future, and the US has been developing this same sort of thing for awhile now. Hopefully we can develope it and use it for more then just getting grunts to carry 3 times their weight in spare ammo

But I am not for wasting dollars on making people in the defense industrial complex rich. We need to have the right equipment for the job and the job has to be many not just centered on one like terrorism. An army that's built to defeat terrorism is an army that will be destroyed by countries like Russia and China. We need to be capable of taking on any threats from any country that threatens us. They need to know that even without nuclear weapons they will have a hard time with the US military.

"Got the muscle? Dump the wit" Same in South Western German (Germans are consisted of various 'tribes' with diverse traditions): _"Was man nicht im Kopf hat, hat man in den Beinen_ ." ("What one doesn't keep in mind will be made up for with strong legs"). It's self-irony - but there's also subtle wisdom in the fact that brute repetition creates athletic skill - after all, battles aren't won by scholarly intellect, but stubborn refusal to run in face of lethal threat. To determine the moment and location of battle, the political and strategic reasoning behind it - that is what should be under utmost scrutiny, imagination and critical contemplation - not just on the staff level...

Problem is not necessarily pleasing the young voters, but more the old generals. The Russian military still has some of the old and bold who want a giant Cold War style Army. Don’t get me wrong there are generals who think that a smaller professional army is good, but there are still enough of the others to make it difficult. Just look at their transition to Brigade Combat Teams, that was meant to be part of the reforms to make Russia more professional and streamlined. Now half of the Brigades are back to being Divisions. Though the introduction of a dedicated military police and an attempt to stamp out on the ‘traditional’ bullying of new recruits are signs that reform is making its way into the military, so maybe in the future conscription will be gone.

The other exoskeletons are the 'powered' ones which means those use servos, batteries and probably sensors to increase the strength of the soldier, much like a 'mech suit'. One has to remember that Georgian war was fought by secondary units - i.e. not western military district facing EU but by units deployed in the southern underbelly. Regarding thermal signature - you can remove one yourself using simple thermal blanket. Thermal blanket usually costs few dollars and as long as it is above you and not touching you etc. you are ... invisible. All cool and great but clothing does not "hoover" over your body. As for a lot of other stuff - its same as in the US - experimental use.

@@monkeyman321 I'm not an expert, but it really does seem like Russia is headed for the stone age in the next few weeks. Total collapse of industries, including internal air travel. I think things will get very bad in Russia very quickly. Probably compounding it will be the fact that Russians will just see this as pointless. It's one thing to suffer for your country when it's in the right, quite another thing if you're squandering your future and the lives of your children because Putin says so. That said, I agree that this would likely turn into an un-winnable situation for Russia. Ukraine is huge and has 40M people. The Russians are fighting because they're being told to or being paid. I doubt that many will see Ukraine as an existential threat. Ukrainians, on the other hand, are fighting for their very lives and futures. They can count on essentially limitless support from the world at large in terms of everything but military forces on the ground. My guess is that you'll start to see Russian soldiers killed by local resistance. Instead of blocking roadways with protestors, you're going to see them let the soldiers drive in, and then kill them one by one as they step out of their tanks or as they walk by on patrol.

+Merrick Ashby I totally agree. I don't believe for a second that any body armor can stop a .50 BMG round. Even if it did, your point remains valid. Plate carriers use trauma pads between the plates and your body for a reason. Without them, you can be wearing level 4+ rifle plates, get hit with a 7.62x39 round in the plates, and die. Without trauma pads to absorb some of the kinetic energy, the impact of the round can still push/compress and tear soft organs. It's like throwing a cinder block into a pond. You can still die of internal bleeding and injuries with the actual slug never touching your body

Even if he survives it, he's gonna be looking at ruptured organs, torn muscles, and an almost literal splitting headache from concussion at minimum. I think. Let alone lost or highly damaged limbs if it's a limb shot. So yeah, even if Russia can make armor which can stop a 50BMG (especially an AP one) shot, the solution will be fairly simple, if costly and will take additional training depending on the environment.

There's a video on youtube of a subsonic 300 BLK round versus a IIIA vest. Best is the enemy of good enough. The size of Russian task force in Georgia was quite comparable with Georgian Army, and Georgia was better equipped. Much better equipped. The war still lasted 8 days. We tend to think Russia is so huge and Georgia is so minute, but in reality number of soldiers on the battlefields isn't necessarily always proportionate. And Georgians were prepared and were defending in the mountains giving them huge advantage.. If Russians broke Georgian resistance in 8 days.. imagine what it is capable of achieving after modernisation. It is a western cultural thing to deliberately downplay enemy in front of potential conscripts (future victims of war), any lost war is followed by an info war, where compilation of local successes, paints a different picture of otherwise a miserable defeat. We’re just now getting to the point where the system’s are small enough, the ruggedness/reliability is already there but battery power is still an issue (but will probably be resolved pretty soon).
