Russian GAZ Trackmaster First Drive Review (Sadko Next)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

#gaz #trackmaster #sadko #aav4x4 #Russian4X4 #4x4truck #CTIS #review
The Gaz Sadko Next 4X4 offroad truck is now available in Australia as the Gaz Trackmaster from Australian Adventure Vehicles. It's a 3.8t 4X4 truck with 42" tyres, a central tyre inflation system (CTIS), front and rear cross-axle lockers and is designed from the ground up as an offroad vehicle. I had the chance to inspect and drive it so here's my first review impressions, along with spec comparisons to other vehicles and how it compares to a 70 and D-Max on the same short course.

Fantastic review. Almost all 4x4 reviewers in Australia never give anything like this much information. They put on some flannel, drive them down a dirt road, talk a bit about the seats and radio, most don't even provide tray dimensions. Thanks for providing all the specs and comparing it to a known quantity. This is how all 4x4 reviews should be, jolly well done.

Australia is the last place where I would expect to see GAZ vehicles, but I'm glad that there is a progress for the GAZ export. They didn't do well with the regular sedans during and after the 1990s, but they contributed a lot to Russian LCV market and their modern larger trucks are far better than the ones they used to make.

Russia has a long history of making interesting and capable off-road vehicles, both medium and heavy duty. One look at the vast and often challenging geography of the Russian Federation, offers the reason why. I think the Gaz would sell quite well in the U.S., if that country would overcome its political aversion to anything Russian. If we live in a connected world -- and we do -- let's move past the paralyzing divisions.

I think you're making some silly assumptions. #1 is that Russians are doing a lot of offroad travel out to Siberia, not the case. #2 That Russians get around through their big country primarily by car - They do so by rail, much more so out in the permafrost areas. #3 Not really an assumption, but your assertion that Russia has a long history of making 'interesting and capable off-road vehicles', beyond 2nd rate armored equipment for the military, how is this the case at all?

One thing abut those GAZ trucks. They can carry much more than the manufacturer says. I drove a GAZ LCV at work, it waz a Gazelle Next - a Ford Transit/Iveco Daily class light truck if you know what I mean. Its empty weight is about 2300-2500 kg with a 4 meter bed and total overall weight is 3500 kg, so the payload is 1000-1200 kg. We loaded up to 3500 kg of cargo and it drove quite well. Not fast, for sure, I drove at about 85-100 km/h, but steady. So what I mean to say, these trucks are pretty robust and can carry more than the manufacturer _guarantees_ they do.

Also GAZ makes road versions of this truck - effectively same frame, same engine, same cab, but no 4WD and road tyres with doubles on rear axle. Those are rated at 8.7 and 10 tons fully loaded weight with cargo capacity of aporox 6 to 8 tons. So in my opinion this truck's relatively low weight capacity is limited so that it doesn't sink in mud. Also it may have something to be with tyres weight rating.

I can talk about the most famous recent one: the SHERP which is just a beast when it comes to crossing siberian taiga. We were told that AVL in Austria had designed and built prototypes for YAMZ. YAMZ had set up a new modern factory in Yaroslavl for manufacture them. We had to disassemble them partially to change pistons, and modify the heads for spark ignition. I was surprised at how heavily they were built for thier displacement, we got good power and torque from them. I retired before they went into production as CNG units.

As always a well structured review of an original subject, Robert! This vehicle looks very interesting and heavily built. It just eats the terrain. I'd like to ask about few topics not directly mentioned and I would appreciate if you could answer at least some of them: - what is the noise level in the cab - terrain and highway speed? It seemed to have very little noise dampening (none under the bonnet), which can be a problem when overlanding long hours. - I was not able to find a source for reliability - engine, transmission... is there something that has the figures? - is there something more specific regarding the mentioned "high wear" of those mechanical axle lockers? - on the manufacturers website I found out these engines are "Euro 3 / Euro 5" compliant. Does it mean the compliance can be chosen by the buyer? The reason I am asking I aim to travel to Asia, where there is high-sulfur diesel only. The newer emission-friendly diesel engines will be killed by it. - I found out in manufacturers specs that the tires are 1084mm in height, which would make them approx. 43 & 1/3 inches. IS the Australian version a bit smaller? - how much electronics are in the truck - I mean in the engine CPU etc. - basically, how easy it would be to fix near Mongolia for example.

    - noise level; didn't drive at speed enough to determine, but would say no worse than similar trucks. The auto option would help, lower revs. - reliability; read my blog post from the Russian commenters here. At this point I'm not concerned. - the pawl lockers are inherently high wear as the pawl constantly contacts the cam. In racecars that's not a problem as you rebuild them every race, as in F1. I did read the Gaz patent but can't recall the exact design they used so cannot explain what they've done differently. - tyre; no it'd be the same ones. 42" comes from 20" rim + 2 x 12" sidewalls. That's the calculated diameter, the actual diameter of a tyre always varies a little especially with 4x4 tyres as they have deep tread. So I'm sure they're the same. - electronic; not many. I'd suggest easy. I recall seeing Gaz vehicles when I was in Mongolia! The truck is very simple, and AAV tell me the documentation is amazingly good. They're happy to talk it over, give them a call.

@@L2SFBC Thank you for the reply, Robert. The reason I am concerned about engine electronics is that it is build in coop with an Austrian manufacturer, and even uses Bosch technology. So the "venerable" Russian build toughness might or might no apply - hard to judge. On paper the Gazko is definitely a prime candidate for great overland vehicle. I will look deeper into technical specifications and feedback. Not to mention the unbelievable price. At least here in Europe the fully equipped double cab is cheaper than a Hilux. After reading your blog I do agree with some points of the commenters, even though they seemed a bit subjective. I am from a post-socialist country, and it is true that since "everybody owned everything" meant nobody felt responsible. So the majority of drivers did not take care of their trucks at all. Constant overloading, no maintenance, relying on the power of the truck instead on drivers skills, etc were the norm. Plus the unavailability of spare parts meant that hammer and welding machines were common first-hand picks for repairs. This led to the machines being build to be able to take this abuse and keep going. In our country there are similar examples with great history - TATRA and LIAZ trucks. Up till 70s/80s they were world leaders in quality and technology, even surpassing Benz trucks. Portal axles, CTIS were common base features, steep inclines of up to 70 percent as well. This cannot be said about personal cars that were generations behind the western production. It is common to see trucks build in 50s/60s to still being heavily used in construction, forestry etc. Especially the legendary V3S truck. But now, although the name is there, the trucks are being build as lego, with many parts from many manufacturers. I worked for years in automotive research and development, so I have seen first hand the decrease of lifespan. One example would be anti-corrosion coating - before 300K km was the norm, now 150K km, even though there is very little additional costs to reach both standards.

@@bm_videa your comments about trucks being built properly, and cars not being up to Western standards is definitely something I've heard a lot of times, but it's probably worth pointing out that the off the shelf cost of Socialist cars was much lower AND the purchasing power of a citizen of those countries was much lower than in the West. They (and their state owned enterprises) could not afford to spend all the money that a West German or Amreican might spend on a Benz or GM. But the society needed trucks to function. And trains. And other heavy equipment. And so that was always prioritised. It's also why many of these countries had more public transport for instance.

and in case of mine explosion driver has more chanses. Trucks is a dual-use equipment, so army needs/requests has higher priority for some manufacturers - they need to be able to produce both army and civillians vehicles (and in case of war be able to switch fully to army trucks), so there is always some unification. Development of GAZ-3308 Sadko (Садко) and its successor GAZ Sadko Next (Садко Next; seen in this video; i think model index is С41A23) was a result of Afgan War and other conflicts - GAZ-66 (Шишига, Shishiga) as army truck was not so human-friendly in maintenance and was not so safe in case of mine explosion under front axle - because of it cab-over design (but GAZ-66 has air-dropped version for paratroopers!), so GAZ-3308 (and its sucessors) got set back cab.
