@@MeAncient basically, it has 2 variations. The red-packed one and the white-packed one. The white was not really liked by soldiers back in my service times, hehe. The red one is truly delicious and it is more like bacon. And it was cooked almost like you'd do with bacon. I used to mix the "melted" fat with those really dry rice/buckwheat packs and it gave it a really decent taste. Unfortunately, it seems like those red-packed packs are no longer in our MREs.

Goulash, or as we call it in Hungary (it's origin) gulyás comes from the word "gulya", which means a herd of cows, and "gulyás" is the guy taking care of them. So a gulyás soup is literally "cowboy soup". It's made of cow meat and anything nice the cowboy had access to nearby or could take with him to the field, potatoes, carrots, powdered red paprika, onions, sometimes red beans, and so on. Most importantly it has all the nutrients someone working on the fields would need. I've tried a Russian MRE before, it had different main meals in it as I remember, no fat, and was still 3700 kcal. An average light physical worker needs 2000-2500 a day.

Many military day rations have significantly more calories than the average person would need, since soldiers are generally using quite a lot of energy. Soldiers aren't eating rations when they're at their bases or camps, they would eat these rations out in the field. You really want to make sure your soldiers are getting enough energy. Especially in colder climates, as even maintaining your body temperature at lower temperatures consumes a lot of energy.

The last dish you asked about has a lot of uses. often just don't eat it. only with great hunger or if you need to get a lot of calories. it is used for frying. such as fried potatoes or porridge in a cauldron. its fat can also be used to light wet firewood. they can temporarily seal the seams of leaking shoes. you can make a lamp out of it by oiling a rag. also at very low temperatures, if a soldier does not have special means, it can be used to protect the skin from frostbite. also from it, as they say, you can make bait for animals or fish. so it's not food. rather a strategic product for a lot of target crushing. there is also an army joke. that if you are at war with Muslims, cartridges must be coated with lard.

As a Russian, granted I haven't served, but I did ate a couple of those 24h MREs with my dad for the fun, the only use for the shpik we found was when re-heating that brick of rice with chicken for some moisture, extra flavour, and crispiness. Tried the shpik with vodka - bad idea, really poor substiture for proper salo. Fried some eggs on it - worked perfectly fine as intended. On pate and jams, meat and jams - yeah, that is a thing, but I think more European. For example Swedish meatballs with lingonberry jam(RIP IKEA, you will be missed), like the one Heinz makes (still not in the same league as IKEA one), maybe some grilled meat/steak with a more tart/savoury jams, like cranberry. Anyway, another great video! Live long and prosper.

This "fat lard" thing is actually a variation of raw-salted pork fat, which is delicious when made properly with lots of salt, pepper and sometimes garlic. Usually eaten in thin slices on top of rye bread and serves as an appetizer (some people love it with their vodka). This military mre canned version, however, is horrible, and soldiers rarely eat it. It's more like "desperate food" incuded in mres for truly dangerous situations when you really need those extra calories of a solid chunk of pure fat. The only way you can make it even more disgusting is heat it up. It' meant to be eaten cold. The real salo ("salted lard", hence the name) is best eaten stone cold, right out of the freezer. Imagine that with fresh rye bread, pickles and a glass of cold vodka. Delicious!

Never heard of using jam with pate and I'm from Europe. Especially since jam would be way too sweet with the amount of sugar in it. I can imagine it with something more sweet/sour/zesty like cranberry or cowberry preserves. Just like you use them on ham, fine cheese etc. Edit: Regarding lard - it's what it's this one seems like a plain lard. It's not that popular anymore here in Poland but you can still buy it usually more fancier with added onions, apple and or roux. Most common use would be as a spread on bread or frying if you don't mind cholesterol. My grandpa used to make it with fired onions and roux. Spread on bread, add some extras like salt, pepper soured pickle or regular pickle and you have a great snack to drink alcohol with or if you need quick intake of carbs and calories for heavy work.

Love it! I grew up backpacking with pellet stoves that could fit in your pocket. I gave my old one to my granddaughter & bought a new one, although the new ones aren't made nearly as well. Old ones were aluminum, new ones are painted steel and they rust. I've cooked many meals on those tablets. You can use small sticks in the micro stoves too. Gotta stir it constantly and add a tad of water into the rice so it doesn't burn. I miss those lean bacon bars we used to get at army surplus supply shops in the 1970s. It was simply dried, cooked lean, shredded bacon compressed into a block. It was great with jelly too! Yum! I've gotta try some of the newer MREs and snacks. Yes! Jelly with the right pate is very good. Oh! Try lifting the edge of the tablets with the match and get the match under the tablet. You can also put the tablet on it's edge and you can usually get them lit with a single wind/water proof match or 2 regular matches. Putting a little twig under the tablet helps a lot. Rain isn't friendly, but if you shelter it until lit, then shelter it with your "pan" of food, or a can, it'll keep going until it's burnt out. Thanks for bringing back some awesome memories! That little tablet stove I carried all over America backpacking, when I was a kid and when my kids were young. Good times in the woods! Thank you! And thank you for remembering your prayers! 😊 PS - The tiny micro stoves has to have it's feet flat or it'll fall over like that. The pocket old Boy Scout aluminum tablet stoves that you can fold into it the pellets for packing are the best pellet stoves. They are far more stable and they pack well when they are cool. There are other brands, but the old BSA aluminum ones are great. I think the Army used them too. They have a rectangle base, are about as thick as a deck of cards, and each end folds open to support the pot or food container. Here's a picture of one like my old one... i.pinimg.com/originals/a3/68/95/a3689589beaebb9b73dccc169753eab2.jpg These are the best IMHO.

Hey Me Ancient and Asa, great videos guys, really entertaining. When the video first started, and you showed the US military mess kit, I recognized that the knife in the mess kit, was the same knife that I used countless times as a kid growing up on the farm. If I remember correctly, the one I had, was stamped "U.S.A.", I believe. I asked my great uncle Ray, where it came from, since he served in Europe in WW2. He either didn't remember, or for some reason wouldn't tell me it was from his mess kit. It held a very sharp edge, and was absolutely indestructible. I recall trying to sharpen it with a file, and it was hard to sharpen, since the steel was tempered so well. A very good knife. It's nice to finally know where that knife came from. It was my favorite "go to" knife, for pretty much anything. A really enjoyable video guys, keep 'em comin'! God bless.

Lard, also known as fat, or SALO, is a universal thing. You can eat it, add it to a frying pan, lubricate your body in the cold to protect yourself from frostbite, rub your boots to make them less wet, use it instead of dry alcohol, like a candle, or as a small source of fire or heat. Most likely I forgot to say something about the capabilities of this product. By the way, these types of canned food are not considered the best in our country.

It is very nice to see a person who knows the price of every crumb of food. Who is so careful about eating food. A huge life experience is immediately felt. Thank you for the review, maybe I'll try this MRE in the future!
Here I am, just laying in bed watching some old marine guy eat Russian rations on a boat, and yet I can't stop.
Just spread liquid bacon on a cracker, add some salt on top of it and enjoy. Do not heat it up. It should be eaten as it is . Another option is to mix it together with the beef, and heat it up. That would bring you even more juicy flavor. Plus you may add it to the rice, to make it less firm while heating it. Thank you very much for your videos. And hi from Ukraine :)
Lard in Russian MRE is not really for cooking anything. Its a cracker topping on its own, and you not suppose to heat it :) Man, crackers with a layer of lard and hot sweet tea helped me a lot during my conscription year back in the days. The combination of fatty and sweet taste with hot tea on a frosty winter day is a miracle

A tip for the chicken and rice and most other food from stove heated Russian/polish food: Always stir them before and during the heating process, it'll get everything heated well that way and make it all soften up if it's a bit solid.

Delicious!
Realy interesting video) I cant stop to watching)) With my best regards from Russia

I have better ideas for the lard for the next video I am able to do with a Russian MRE....TFW!

You are very positive, thank you for the video and good presentation of the material
