Russia-Ukraine war: US House passes crucial aid deal worth $61bn | BBC News

The House of Representatives has finally approved billions of dollars in new US military aid for Ukraine to help combat Russia's invasion.
The much-delayed measure had vocal opponents in Congress and it took a fragile bipartisan deal to get the $61bn (£49bn) package through.
Republicans said more than a third would be dedicated to replenishing weapons and ammunition.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the US support as "vital".
The aid would keep the war from expanding and save thousands of lives, he added.
It is unclear when the aid will arrive, but reports suggest it could be within days. The package will now go to the Senate, which is expected to pass it before President Joe Biden signs it into law.

    Here in the UK the government gave £750 Billion to the banks in 2008. We had 10 years of austerity and high taxes to pay off the banks debts. They gave £250 Billion to the EU over the same time and then £500 Billion on covid. But now there is no money for the sick and disabled.

Anyway being the leading superpower costs money. It's always been the case. Maintaining the British Empire cost the British Crown more than it got from customs duties and taxes. The USA isn't doing badly, anyway. Look at Russia, where 30% of the national budget is being spent on the war, while 28% of its population have no access to running water and about 30% have to shit outdoors because they have no indoor toilets. I'm not saying the situation in the US is perfect - it surely isn't. But somehow it's Russians and Chinese that are flocking to live in the USA, not the other way around. For all its problems, the US remains a very affluent and relatively free country compared to the other superpowers.

    no way you are spinning this as "finally America does what it needs to" as if the US is not by far the biggest supporter of Ukraine, and America is not the ONLY reason Ukraine has not capitulated yet. Despite the Russian invasion of Ukraine being on Europe's doorstep, the US has provided by far the most military aid to Ukraine, without which, Russia would have already conquered Ukraine. Europeans like to stay at the sidelines and watch the US do the heavy lifting and dirty work, benefit from US actions, while also criticizing the US for actions in very complicated, difficult situations

Oh well, she cried, “I’ll take you in and I'll take care of you. Take me in oh tender woman, Take me in, for heaven's sake, Take me in oh tender woman, sighed the snake. She wrapped him up all cozy in a curvature of silk And then laid him by the fireside with some honey and some milk . Now she hurried home from work that night as soon as she arrived. She found that pretty snake she’d taken in had been revived. Take me in, oh tender woman , Take me in, for heaven’s sake, Take me in oh tender woman, sighed the snake. Now she clutched him to her bosom, You’re so beautiful, she cried. But if I hadn’t brought you in by now you might have died. Now she stroked his pretty skin and then she kissed and held him tight . But instead of saying thanks, that snake gave her a vicious bite. Take me in, oh tender woman, Take me in, for heaven’s sake, Take me in oh tender woman, sighed the snake. I saved you, cried that woman. And you've bit me even, why? You know your bite is poisonous and now I’m going to die. The latest "Fiscal Monitor Report" released by the IMF shows that the U.S. fiscal deficit is expected to reach 7.1% of gross domestic product (GDP) next year, while the average level of other developed economies is only 2%. The Financial Times quoted an IMF report as saying that large-scale U.S. spending could have a profound impact on the global economy and pose risks to other economies. Therefore, the United States urgently needs to solve the serious imbalance between expenditure and revenue.

    Expectations that the U.S. will be able to resolve artillery shell and air defense missile shortages by throwing more money at the problem is not realistic at all and we found this out two years ago with news of the real rates of U.S. artillery, ammunition and missile production. The U.S. defense production system is not oriented to high volumes of lower value items, but low volumes of high-cost units along with a lifetime of maintenance and logistics support with upgrades. The U.S. aside, Europe is in no financial position economically to deal with the Ukrainian crisis over the long term either. They’ve got their own problems now as a result of this crisis and try to come back economically and politically and regain the quality of life that they had before. But right now, Europe’s in a recession. They’ve cut off their energy sources. And it’s going to take a long time and a lot of capital to regain some semblance of that. What they had before they will not be able to replicate on any near-term basis. Europe has got its problems, and the U.S. has got its problems, and they are trying to resuscitate a dead dog (Zelensky regime.)

    @namur-iq6ih

    @@MS-lk4xc House Speaker Mike Johnson indicated that only a fraction, approximately $12-14 billion, would directly provide weapons to Ukraine. A substantial portion, around 80%, would benefit U.S. defense industries. U.S. involvement in the ongoing proxy conflict in Ukraine was only prolonging the standoff. The collapse of Ukraine is inevitable, despite the U.S. aid bill. These scenes of celebration are going to look particularly foolish when Ukraine collapses anyway. The federal government can print more money; it can’t just print more artillery shells and air defense missiles. Iraq and Afghanistan wars also began with annual appropriations in the $60B range. Those wars ended up costing trillions. Simple math showed that the new funding bill could do no more than possibly buy Ukraine precisely half of a Summer Counteroffensive. And, of course, everyone knows full well how that much-heralded counteroffensive attempt ended up last year, limited battlefield achievements coupled with massive manpower and hardware losses. The U.S. should cut a deal and seek detente with Russia to provide a baseline for world peace.

    Anyone else noticing how degenerated KZread comments on news channels are becoming? Used to be the case that it was a bit better than the average twitter discourse but in some ways this is starting to look even worse. I'm so curious as to whether bots are largely responsible or if the average viewer is genuinely this stupid.

    The 'Russian bots' are actually regular people like me from the UK. The Ukraine simps are the 🐑 and bots.
