Russia’s Proposal for a Caspian-Black Sea Canal

Ойын-сауық

Russia has proposed building a 700 kilometer long canal along the Kuma-Manych Depression, connecting the Caspian and Black Seas. If built, the canal would be eight times longer than the Panama canal, helping connect central Asian countries to the open seas, while providing a shorter route for shipping than the existing Volga-Don Canal system. With increased cargo traffic between the Caspian Sea and the rest of the world, the project may finally come to fruition in the future.

When you mention the French canal project I'm assuming that your talking about the Seine Nord canal that is proposed in northern France. That canal is made to facilitate inland water transport as well as to connect the Scheldt and Seine rivers together, which in effect would also more directly connect Paris with all the other water infrastructure in Europe due to a chain of other canals in northern Europe. on top of that the canal is only 100-ish km long so it's not a giant undertaking compared to the one in the video. so honestly the one in France just makes more sense compared to the one in the video.

Water loss for the Caspian Sea should be minimal. The Caspian Sea, as an inland lake, will be at a different altitude from sea level than the Black Sea. The canal will have locks. The amount of water you need to withdraw to raise and lower ships would be minimal compared with the size of the Caspian Sea. The Panama Canal works the same way - ships have to be lifted up to a height of 44 m to the level of a lake in the middle of the canal, which is a tiny lake in comparison with the Caspian Sea. No one has ever suggested the Panama Canal would stop working because the lake runs out of water.

Everybody making comparisons to the Aral Sea disaster - that was an irrigation canal where water was diverted to sustain cotton production. This would be a transportation canal, where no water is being consumed. Also, the many people suggesting the Caspian would drain - even if the Caspian was at a higher altitude than the Black Sea (which it is not) - has nobody seriously ever heard of a lock? All canals have lock systems, if not for overcoming changes in elevation then for simply controlling water flow. Go follow the existing Don Canal route on Google Earth and count how many locks are in use. People seriously need to stop undermining the intelligence of Russia.
