    Anything in 36 miles range was immediately vaporised. The impact was seen up to 150 miles from the detonation site. The glass windows in far away Finland and Sweden were shattered for some buildings. This was insane. Parachute was attached to bomb to slow its descent So that plane which dropped it have time to move at least 36 miles away before TSAR Bomba detonates. They barely made it🥲

    This blast taught Science a valuable lesson: explosions over about 35 megatons deliver more energy to the stratosphere than they do the ground. An array of smaller weapons would be more significant in battle than one monster.

  • @MrJdsenior

    @MrJdsenior

    I thought the reasonable limit for destructive increase loss of bang for the buck was about 100 megatons. I guess I should go research that. These weapons are ALWAYS going to deliver more of their energy off the ground than on, that is just due to the geometry of the blast, it doesn't matter how large they are. Only a small portion travels along the ground. Your last sentence is most certainly correct, hence MIRVs that space the multiple RVs out in space, or maybe initial reentry (see what I did there?).

    According to "Dark Sun" author Richard Rhodes, Edward Teller proved that there is a practical limit to the yield of thermonuclear weapons. A detonation at this limit would detach a piece of the planet having a certain radius and propel it upward at a certain speed. Any detonation with a yield exceeding this limit would propel the same size piece skyward faster.

    @@albertplaysguitar there is no problem creating any yield thermonuclear devices for a very long time on demand:Soviet nuclear scientists were asked by Khrushchev back in 1958 when the Tsar Bomb was suggested about the limitations that they had in their possibility to create the maximum yield bomb that could be still transported to the test site by any reasonable means and what will it be capable of-and also the same about the hypothetical non-deliverable device.The answer was that at that point they were already able to make a deliverable bomb of any desired yield up to one gigatonne as well as Americans could do as for both there was no more limiting factors to ensure the estimated percentage of the entire bomb's mass that will be converted into energy during the blast as high as 2.3%:out of a 10 tonnes bomb there will be as much as 230 kilograms of mass converted into pure energy and that is a lot of energy..Yet the same time the limit of the other kind is in place:will there be any long lasting or permanent damage to the ecosystem and the planet itself-not in the mean that it will destroy earth because it is impossible but because we can make it worse for next generations and so the reasonable maximum for atmospheric nuclear tests should be 100 megatons which is already not recommended due to the fact that even 50 mt will be enough to make earth lose some little amount of its atmosphere as it will be ejected in space by the blast and so even 100 megaton is not recommended.

    As far as I know about nuclear physics and hydrogen bomb-making, there are practical limits, like it being too big or heavy to be put on a missile, bomber, or cargo ship, but I don't think there are theoretical limits on the size and power of a hydrogen bomb. The Tzar Bomba was the biggest bomb ever set off because so far, no one has been crazy enough to make a bigger one. There are more than enough "reasonably sized" nuclear warheads and missiles in Russian and American arsenals to blow each other's cities, towns, villages, strip malls, truck stops, and convenience stores off the face of the planet, should our leaders decide that that would be a reasonable thing to do, which I hope they don't....
