I think John McCain, US Senator, made a statement like that in 2015 in The Week, "Look, Russia is a gas station masquerading as a country," McCain said. "It's kleptocracy. It's corruption. It's a nation that's really only dependent upon oil and gas for their economy, and so economic sanctions are important."

The person who said Estonia was somehow 2nd fiddle because of banking with Norway (actually mostly Sweden), should maybe study that a little bit. Let us assume that Estonia is run by people intelligent enough to link their banking with Norway. In such a case, we ought to look at Norway and ask, what did they do with their oil windfall? Did they do what Russia has done with theirs? Nope. They gave it to the people. In Norway. The Norwegian federal fund from oil is now worth $275,000 per Norwegian citizen, banked to the benefit of every citizen of their country. Norway is the most stable economy in the world. Banking there would be the best bet for any small and emerging country. Banking in Russia, where they have the exact same oil windfall, not so much.

@@Imaxxd22 Unfortunately who controls Ukraine? If you say the stronger powers such as Russia and U.S. get to control Ukraine then they have to follow the Budapest Memorandum. If Ukraine is responsible for controlling itself and independent from the stronger powers in this world then there should be no Minsk agreements where Russia plays as a mediator after having Russian military proxies play a part in the 2014 conflict. Minsk I was broken where Ukraine ceasefired but Russians continue attacking to additionally occupy an airport so why trust Minsk II? Best to wind it back to 1994 borders away from Russia. There are less and less reasons to believe the pro-separation of Donbas from Ukraine was ever for its own independence as opposed to becoming part of Russia. Donbas separatist leaders that did not conform to being pro-Russian or pro-Putin were either assassinated or arrested. Examples includes Arsen Pavlov and Igor Girkin.

A very fascinating thing about Russians, from a Western perspective, is that looks can be so deceiving. The people you look at and expect are global-minded people, are oftentimes extreme nationalists, and the people whose looks make you think that that person is probably knee deep in propaganda, turns out to have an extremely nuanced and informed opinion. Western stereotypes simply don't work on the citizens of Moscow.

In total, the organization reported 6 more extrajudicial executions of Ukrainian military personnel. Also, the report of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights mentions the bad treatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war. And guess who invented the internet? Russia or China? Nope, the United States, a Western English-speaking country. So, the preeminence of English can be attributed to the innovation of English-speaking countries, whose democratic, capitalist societies and economies serve as the chief driver of such innovation. And the technology undergirding Russia's chief exports of oil and gas? All Western inventions, including oil drilling and pipelines, along with modern shipping which transport the product to market. It is the West which is envied and admired, and where so many want to immigrate to, not Russia or China. I used to watch these interview in bewilderment at what I thought was Russian delusion. Now, I am mostly saddened because I see Russians struggling so hard to give meaning to their lives and to their country, looking to find some pride where there is none, and grasping desperately for normalcy when the feeling of impending doom is lurking. It must be difficult to say things you don't believe in and have to convince yourself you do. Russians must become bipolar to be safe!

Just as Froggie in a nice warm bath enjoys it. Ivan-the-elder is happy about the message his TV gives him. When Froggy feels sleepy he is unaware that instead of cooling, his tub is becoming ever hotter. Ivan, his vodka bottle now empty, fails to notice that his village is half empty and his pension buys ever less. If generations of people are taught that black is exactly the same as white and good identical to bad, it shouldn't surprise that many cannot conceive that this can be wrong.

I find it funny when so many say "We will develop our own hi-tech industries" as if it was as simple as starting to grow grain. It has taken decades, in some cases a century, for companies like Daimler AG, Apple, Google, Intel, Airbus, Samsung, Bayer etc the reach the level of skill, expertise and know-how they have today. Even if there was no brain drain, it will take decades before Russia can produce anything near the standatd of technology they now have to import. Ever heard of a Russian computer or mobile phone? Wanna swap your BMW to a Zhiguli (Lada)? Heck, even a significant part of their critically important oil drilling and refining equipment is foreign made

Russian main and initial problem is gerontocracy: old people ruling and applying old "solutions" for a world that has already changed. Russia could be a modern developed economy because it has things that by themselves could propel the country without much effort. Also Russia has a demographic crisis, that alone is more problematic than whatever paranoia that it held against its old Cold War enemies: Each soldier (and emigrated person) that Russia loses, it will never, ever, recover (that's what a NEGATIVE birth rate does for any country). Russia is not alone in this, but Europe, whether willing or unwillingly, is flooding itself with immigrants (that, yes, they also carry some deep problems, but at least they can bet on some kind of youth). To the aforementioned point: Russia still tries to apply policies that were thought out for the Soviet Union (or worse, the Russian Empire) and NOT the current "big country" that Russia is today, this failure also leads the rulers to take the wrong steps (it bluffs so much and leads its own population to have a mislead view of grandeur that doesn't pay attention to all the little details needed to fix the problem: every hole in the sinking boat makes water). Russia's rulers (plural) also are more worried on maintaining their own power than propelling the possible diverse economies of its immense territory lest these territories get ideas of autonomy or secession: the price is two really wealthy cities in the entire country and a miserable countryside by design. Again, by design, as a way to control all the regions with the money that Moscow gives (another price for not having a good, honest conversation of what kind of country Russia can be). Well, corruption deserves its own chapter but other countries have endemic corruption yet they found ways to, even then, build something in spite of the rot. Russia suffered a brain drain way before the war, the war only deepened this problem. Russia also tried to play the "I also can be a superpower" like China, India and others, the thing is that the others have done (with different degrees of success) the complex economic game, while Russia, other than selling raw materials and a little more, keeps repeating that is huge (though very, very possibly mostly obsolete) Nuclear Arsenal is reason enough. Nowadays (and China understood this, as does India today, etc.) economy makes might. All in all young minds could (conditional) try to being to put Russia on the right track, the problem being that even if that happens, the country would be in a dire state on many levels (and I repeat this because it's important: demographics, having young people, is key for any economic development and Russia is plummeting).
