Russia and Ukraine's fight for the last streets of Bakhmut - BBC News

The battle for the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut has been the longest and bloodiest of this war so far.
Western officials estimate between 20,000 and 30,000 Russian troops have been killed or wounded here, while Ukraine's military has also paid a heavy price - and it still isn't over.
Russia has been trying to capture Bakhmut for months, and it's been a testament - so far - to Ukraine's determination not to give ground.

Just yesterday I heard a story that the Russian air defense system is compromised because the military officials who were in charge of the development of the system bought cheap electronic parts, not the military grade parts that were required to make it operate as designed, but invoiced for the more expensive military grade parts and pocketed the difference. Typical Russian corruption.

Ben Hodges is a role model for us all. He has taken all of his skills, experience, connections and friends in high places and put them all to the service of good at the time when they are most needed. He leads charities and activists, directing their efforts, whilst travelling the globe, speaking to anyone who will listen, explaining what is needed, what is really happening, why it’s so important and, most importantly, helping the world to understand why each and every one of us has a stake in this fight. This is, after all, the World War Three that you get when neither side is willing to use nukes. Putin is getting his maximum use out of them now, with empty, meaningless threats, to which the world wide press routinely overreacts. But they will NEVER be fired off by Putin . . . not, “deliberately,” at any rate. I can promise that. It’s the only certainty I have. However, mistakes are common in Russia, as their track record with nuclear weapons mistakes and nuclear power disasters are a matter of record. Therefore, it is in the west’s interests that Russia is roundly and swiftly defeated. To that end, we must ALL contact our representatives and demand the long range missiles and fixed wing aircraft Ukraine needs to WIN this war, and KEEP the peace thereafter! Don’t let anyone tell you that writing to your representatives is a waste of time. They’re wrong about that. Slava Ukraine! 🇬🇧🇺🇦✌️

@@bigboss7293 , The Russian SPETZNES also wear a “Special Operations”, (Scull & Crossbones on a black background), patch that resembles the 3rd SS Totenkopf, (3rd SS PANZERDIVISION) “Deaths Head” Patch, I was also wondering if this is just by coincidence, In August 1939, as Europe slid towards another world war, Hitler and the Stalin signed a non-aggression treaty. The Nazi-Soviet Pact came as a complete surprise to other nations, given the ideological differences between the two countries. It ushered in a period of military co-operation which allowed Hitler to ignore western diplomatic moves and invade Parts of Poland & Romania, as well as The Baltics, (Lithuania, Latvia & Estonia, Stalin's forces then attacked from the west and completed the subjugation and partition of the Polish state. For the next year and a half Germany also benefitted economically from the arrangement, with Russia exporting grain and oil in return for manufactured goods. Soviet cooperation allowed Hitler to expand his plans for European domination. In May 1940 the Blitzkrieg rolled westwards and France was conquered in six weeks. But peace with Russia would not last. Hitler had always wanted to see Germany expand eastwards to gain Lebensraum or 'living space' for its people. After the fall of France Hitler ordered plans to be drawn up for an invasion of the Soviet Union. He intended to destroy what he saw as Stalin's 'Jewish Bolshevist' regime and establish Nazi hegemony. The conquest and enslavement of the Soviet Union's racially 'inferior' Slavic populations would be part of a grand plan of 'Germanisation' and economic exploitation lasting well beyond the expected military victory. Regardless of recent economic and political co-operation, the Soviet Union was regarded as the natural enemy of Nazi Germany and a key strategic objective. When Stalin realised that Germany’s Hitler’s Army was beginning to Attack The USSR, he changed his Alliances from Germany to The UK in 1941, also making Alliances with America, as these two countries was not in any conflict with the USSR, THE BATTLE FOR MOSCOW Hitler now decided to resume the battle for Moscow. On 2 October he unleashed Operation 'Typhoon'. He believed the Russians had been fatally weakened and lacked the strength to defend their capital - one more push would see it fall and victory would be his. But the Red Army had been reinforced. Almost a million Soviet troops were in place, although they had few tanks and aircraft left. A multi-layered ring of defences had been thrown around the capital and its citizens had been mobilised. The German offensive was carried out by a reinforced Army Group Centre, comprising three infantry armies and three panzer groups - 1 million men and 1,700 tanks. However the Luftwaffe was weak after over three months of sustained operations. And the weather was beginning to turn. Once again the initial assault was a success. The panzer divisions stormed ahead and over 600,000 Russian soldiers were captured in two more huge encirclements near the cities of Bryansk and Vyazma. The Russians were down to about 90,000 men. But as they reached the approaches to Moscow, the German formations slowed to a crawl. Autumn rains had turned the dirt roads into rivers of mud. It was the Rasputitsa - the 'quagmire season' - and wheeled and horse-drawn transport became hopelessly stuck. The Germans chose to temporarily halt operations. In mid-November, with the temperature dropping and the ground now frozen hard, the panzers attempted a final pincer attack around Moscow itself. The delay had given the Soviets time to bring in further reinforcements, including reservists and troops from Siberia and the eastern borders. The northern German pincer was the most successful and got within 12 miles of the city. German officers could see the Kremlin buildings through their field glasses. The Germans also tried attacking in the centre, along the Minsk-Moscow road. On 2 December a reconnaissance unit got within 5 miles of Moscow. Though tantalisingly close, this was the limit of the entire advance. The depleted German units were exhausted and frozen into inactivity in the deep snow. On 5 December the Soviets launched a surprise counter-offensive. The Germans were forced into a retreat, despite Hitler's call to defend every foot of ground. Guderian and several other senior generals who advised withdrawal were sacked. The Russians succeeded in crushing various German formations in encirclements of their own. The Luftwaffe struggled to operate but performed vital work ferrying supplies to cut off units and harrying the Russian advance. Army Group Centre was pushed back up to 150 miles from Moscow. A furious Hitler dismissed the commander-in-chief of the German Army, Field Marshal Walther von Brauchitsch, and appointed himself in his place. The WAGNER Group PMC also has a Neo-Nazi "sabotage and assault reconnaissance group", called Rusich Unit Emblem of the Rusich Group featuring a combination of the Kolovrat swastika, the Black Sun, the Algiz rune, the Týr rune, the ribbon of Saint George and the black-yellow-white flag of the Russian Empire. The Wagner Group includes a contingent known as Rusich, or Task Force Rusich, referred to as a "sabotage and assault reconnaissance group", which has been fighting as part of the Russian separatist forces in eastern Ukraine. Rusich are described as a far-right extremist or neo-Nazi unit, and their logo features a Slavic swastika. The group was founded by Alexey Milchakov and Yan Petrovsky in the summer of 2014, after graduating from a paramilitary training program run by the Russian Imperial Legion, the fighting arm of the Russian Imperial Movement. As of 2017, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General and the International Criminal Court (ICC) were investigating fighters of this unit for alleged war crimes committed in Ukraine. It is being investigated to officially be regarded as a Terrorist Organisation. 🤔

Great report! Is it possible to ask an expert to compare the battle of Kursk to the potential counter-offense of Ukraine, focusing on the commonality such as the linear defense trenches that the Russians and the Soviets have built, and the potential penetration of large armour forces through a weak spot as the Germans had executed? The interesting commonality between the two scenarios is that 1. Hitler also wanted a Spring counter-offense, but his generals advised him that they should wait for the weather, the production of more advanced tanks, and the training of their new recruits to complete, as their veterans had depleted in huge numbers already. Then the Germans waited till July to begin their offense. It looks like Ukraine is also considering the same thing, hence their procrastination on timing. The difference of course is that the Germans had two fronts to contend with, and Soviets had a huge reserve available to ambush the Germans.
