charla The facts aren't though. They are from the last couple years. Just because the clips are from "2014 and earlier" doesn't dismiss the facts that are presented in front of you through the numbers; he's just an average finisher around the rim.

He said in the video that he is going into his 9th year in the nba. Russ aint stopping now when it comes to his insanity at the rim with difficult shots. As long as that continues Russ won't be an elite finisher like kyrie or lebron. The dude played with the best scorer in the nba and he felt like he had to take ridiculous shots at the rim as shown in the video. Can't imagine what will happen when he is the only option on the team. Total scoring volume will increase and his %'s will drop even further

Nobody ever wondered why his fg % so low ?

  • @Qichar

    @Qichar

    7 жыл бұрын

His FG% is low because he's not a good shooter. And he's way too fond of taking ill-advised jumpers, and he's only average among guards at finishing at the rim. Considering that Curry averaged better than 45% from outside the arc, Westbrook's 29.6% this season looks pretty poor. But this shouldn't be news to anyone that watches OKC games. I love Westbrook's competitive spirit but I've always thought he took too many shots per game. Given his (relatively) low offensive efficiency, it seems the team would have been better served if he distributed more. To say nothing of how getting everyone involved (which is the point guard's JOB) would have helped his teammates get into a rhythm. They've got to be feeling like Russ doesn't trust them when they are standing around wide open and Russ dives into the paint yet again. However, this year his assists per game jumped up to 10.4, so maybe Westbrook himself is starting to realize a better way to win. Too bad he realized it too late to keep KD in OKC.

+slyrundog True, Rose did turn over the ball a bunch in his younger days but a lot of those were off wild passes and botched dribbles. His finishing was rarely off in his prime and when it was Noah was there to clean up. But I feel like Rose's layups were more in control than Westbrook's. But Westbrook is a way better dunker. So that's why Rose was a better finisher. Now though those days for Rose are pretty much gone. He does have too much confidence going to rim as when he was young mostly because of injuries.

Bout time someone recognized that he's overrated. He makes horrible decisions, particularly in the 4th Q. HIs athletic ability and mental drive makes up for it to some extent, but not enough to justify it. If I was Durant I would have left sooner. All he had was a bunch of role players and a "mad" point guard who can't be coached.

Half the game is mental. KD's team was not doing what he needed to be the most comfortable and be the star player. He's not a team leader like Lebron but that's a personality thing. But typically a leader takes most of the blame, in any situation. Take away Russel's bad shot choices (the ones most would agree on as being bad..forced, hogging, out of control etc) and they would have made it to the finals. That's most likely a statistical fact. And Curry was a no show, I don't blame anyone else for that.

And dont forget when there were other "guaranteed championship" teams, they usually did not win the ring. For example Miami Heat with LeBron for the first time, or LaL with Howard, Nash, Kobe. But its true, this warriors team is clearly the strongest out of them. Finalist of the playoffs getting extra superstar on its roster, wow.

I used to think that Russell Westbrook, despite me not liking a lot of aspects about his game, was at least elite at the rim, so this was a nice video, nuancing my view quite a bit. Anti-Anti Fun Percentage. In fact, in 2015-16 he was the best in the league... better than big men and LeBron. He took more than 3 layups per game so it's not an insignificant number. If you just watch him take layups in traffic you'll understand why that's the case. He isn't as explosive or flashy but he's crafty and uses both hands really well, plus he has the threat of the floater

The title says Russ is not as u think "at the rim". Coach further invokes advanced stats to support his viewpoint on how Russ is not so good at "finishing at the rim". Sadly some people have to bring up other aspects of his game like how he "sucks the defense in when driving", or even mention irrelevant players like Curry, both of which have nothing to do with his "ability to finish at the rim". Illiteracy truly is a big problem. BTW, Russ is one of my favorite players and I most certainly hope that he can improve his efficiency and carry his team back to the WCF.

I wonder how these numbers are affected by high pressure situations. Either in the 4th quarter or when the game is within a basket? I suspect that they take a dip because Russ does have a tendency to force plays during crunch time.

In the playoffs, he upped his averages to 26.0 11.0 and 6.9 with 2.6 steals and 0.1 blocks, as he led his team to within one game of the NBA Finals against the statistically greatest NBA team ever. He also led the playoffs in total assists, even though he played one less series than Curry and LeBron. He was also tops in offensive box plus/minus, and second in overall box plus/minus AND value over replacement player to LeBron James. Respect? Appreciation? No. We MUST find something negative, ANYTHING negative, to say about him. Smh.

Russell Westbrook is an underrated passer and scorer (even with the turnovers), but his defense is so overrated. People assume because he's the most athletic PG ever he's some lockdown defender. He puts in less effort on defense than even Curry. There's a reason why he got outplayed by an injured Curry in the Conference finals, and got absolutely dominated in the regular season

  • @rayr1vera

Westbrook exploits his athleticism, so when it comes to finishing.... he's overly off balanced because his timing+explosion doesn't give him the right footing. I don't think he really has a lot of that 'English' touch when it comes to laying it in too. But also when he's contested in the paint he literally wants to go right through the defender as well. But he still is a great finisher regardless

Coach Nick: I thoroughly enjoy your teaching and videos. It's a breath of fresh air to see someone actually critique, analytically, these players because if not for this hard evidence, everything becomes a generality. So many fans are "highlight" driven fans that actually know little about the game of basketball. Many have not even sat down to watch a full game, and I think that in the case of Russ, he intoxicates one's objectivity with his superior athleticism leading to so many fans out there that believe he is something he just is not, an elite-level point guard! I am from OKC, and have stood firm in the belief that Russ will never win a championship unless he changes his game. He needs to stop shooting so many threes (30% is not good enough), gain control over his body/athleticism (as you've shown here in this video), and become a student of the game so that his horrid shot selection can be rectified before it's too late and he wakes up to find himself retired with no rings.

Hey man, great video. longtime OKC fan here to weigh in on some stuff. I agree with everything in your video, it's statistics! My biggest complaint with Russ is his tendency to fall on the ground from driving to the basket too hard and not getting back on D. However, I'd be curious see how he has improved over the years on this factor. This was a HUGE problem with him early on, but it seems to me(just from watching) that he has improved on this issue recently. His assists per game have increased from dumping the ball to Serge, Enes and Steven bc I think he realized he won't get as many fouls. I think he is finishing better than he was 2-3 years ago, but there are definitely underlying issues that you brought up. I'm curious to see how he is going to adapt without KD. Hopefully he continues to pass the rock, but if he acts like he did two years ago we won't make the playoffs. PS I think Detroit benefited from Reggie Jackson's similar tendencies because of Drummond. Drummond is a beast! Maybe you'll see Steve help Russell at a better rate this year.

Simon And 3rd all time in scoring, 1st among non-big men. And even then, the only guys above him are Malone (played his whole career with stockton) and KAJ (played part of his career with Oscar and another with Magic). Meanwhile Derek Fisher is the best PG Kobe ever played with, yet still topped Jordan in all time scoring. Also Kobe didn't play many minutes as a rookie and played injured in his last few seasons. Those seasons aside he averaged 27 ppg over a 15 season stretch (that's longer than MJ's entire career). And MJ's 37.1 ppg season was very similar. 28 FGA and 12 FTA per game, 48% shooting, 18% 3 point shooting, and a lower eFG than 06 Kobe (48% to Kobe's 49%). I suppose MJ is also an overrated scorer by your metric ? And the ppg difference is even smaller if you consider pp100p, which strips MJ of the advantage of a higher pace than 06 Kobe. Their usage rates and true shooting percentages were even identical. There is literally no way to call Kobe's scoring overrated without directly implying that MJ's is also.

If he was like Chris Paul they'd be much worse Only players to average 20-10 (ppg-apg) in a playoff run past the 2nd round - Magic Johnson (3x) - 1986, 1987, 1991 - Kevin Johnson (2x) - 1989, 1990 - Steve Nash (2x) - 2005, 2006 - Russell Westbrook (1x) - 2016 Only player to average 25-10 (ppg-apg) in a playoff run past the 2nd round - Russell Westbrook (1x) - 2016 Oh, here's CP3's only notable playoff accomplishment - tied most all star teams (9) without passing the 2nd round, soon to hold this record alone

Lol the fact that he didn't expose Curry doesn't mean Curry doesn't have his problems too. And the fact that he used statistics to expose Westbrook doesn't mean he's hating on Westbrook. And Curry chocking in the finals is common knowledge. why would he have to spend time talking about a topic that's widely known instead of having interesting discussions on other more counterintuitive arguments?

+Jasper Jamm the lay ups that Russell attempts are alot harder than a regular attack that most guards do. It's that a fault of questionable shot selection? May be. Or is it coaching fault that he is not put into a position to succeed? For the shots that Westbrook is forced to take he is shooting a pretty great %. Can u imagine if a good philosophy was instilled in Okc? Where Westbrook could get easy cuts to the basket like steph get and everybody on GSW gets? Or if Westbrook had a better big man to whom RW could drop the ball to could finish around the rim incase the defense is pluggin up on him? This guy never gives Westbrook credit for anything. With all his flaws Westbrook is a top 5 player in the league and it's pure blind haterism to deny him that title
