Always been one of my favourites Rush songs. Great song for all of them to get a chance to show off their abilities and create an almost orchestral instrumental part. But the lyrics are the thing that really got me, and also explains why the song ended so abruptly.

Thanks for doing my request. I did request the official music video with them playing the song. These fan produced videos don't really give the proper vision of the song. Sorry, I am not that tech savvy to send a link. If you watch their official music video you will see Neil using wooden blocks and other percussion instruments. That sound was a synth that you asked about. Also, the guys are quite young in the video as well. This song is off Hemispheres and the album has both the brains and the gentleman in the suit on the cover of the album. Neil said of song, what if trees behaved like people. Cheers

@@MJLimey.ReviewsAll No worries. Once you the correct video you will get all your answers. This song was written when they were in their mid 20's. The whole Hemispheres album is a masterpiece. Cheers

The brains and the suit are from the album cover. This is from the Hemispheres album. The title song is about humans being divided into parts dominated by love or by logic. This was represented by brain hemispheres, one with a man in a business suit and hat (representing logic) and one with a naked man dancing (representing love). Yes, this is not the video to watch for The Trees. The 'live' (on a soundstage, no audience) video is the one to watch.

This is one you should look up on Lyrics meanings, online. The Trees are allegory for human political activity. The Maples stand in for the "lower classes", in society, who feel oppressed and disadvantaged by the rich and powerful -- played by the Oaks -- and they are banding together to speak out against the oppression.

LOL, love the dragon avatar, 3:15 I think that's basically a bamboo xylophone, I forget what it's called, but it's used a lot in traditional Japanese music...

Thanks for liking my dragon! this one is called Bob, i am still waiting on suggestions for names for the purple dragon and the 2nd green one. ? Ok thanks I will look it up, some people have said they are wood blocks, but if it is Japanese it must have a proper name! thank you for watching!

@@MJLimey.ReviewsAll Yeah, it may be wood blocks, though I'm pretty sure that I've also heard that sound in conjunction with taika drums (Y'know, those Japanese guys with headbands and what look like diaper thongs jumping around and beating those white skin drums...) it's a total performance, just look up "Taika drums", and I love the mundane naming of fantastical creatures...so a dragon named Bob or Steve really hits...perhaps I'll suggest "Cormano"...just because the SNES game Sunset Riders features 4 playable characters: Bob, Billy, Steve, and Cormano...lol...

@@MJLimey.ReviewsAll no, but if that interests you, tangentially, Neil’s last kit for the Clockwork Angels tour was made from a tree that was submerged in an Eastern European bog for over a thousand? Years! His collaboration with the drum makers was captured in a documentary, that I think is called “masters of Resonance”. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ma6oj7KagpO-hdo.htmlsi=R9P_mlru9nsevKWh

Yes, it’s about trees, but it’s a metaphor that Neil has carefully left open for interpretation. Given his interest in the writings of Ayn Rand, I’ve always assumed he wrote it during a period that reflected her philosophies that if you control those that are achieving great things, you will end up with all of humanity cut short to make everyone equal, and no one will be extraordinary, that is the central theme of “Atlas Shrugged’. Neil eventually evolved his personal thinking beyond these simple frameworks, as a lot of people consider them somewhat oversimplified in today’s terms.

No Flautist in RUSH just synths & temple blocks. Did you pay attention to the lyrics? The last line of the song is "now the trees ARE ALL KEPT EQUAL BY HATCHET, AXE & SAW. It's an allegory about the generational battles that happen in human society: the oaks are the older generation, the maples are the younger generation, the maples are complaining about the oaks, get it. Its a fan made video!
