OK, this was awesome! So glad you enjoyed it! I thought you might like the size of this crowd after you watched YYZ live in Rio.

Great recommendation. I'd never heard the full version of this with the Paint it Black intro. Top three stones song for me.

Sir - the laundry machines had no meaning at all. They were used coin op machines, picked up by the band. They DID operate. Crew used to come out and put quarters in them to keep them running. The band would grab out souvenir shirts and throw them into the crowd... but they served no meaningful function. The tour with the chicken roasters.... the whole Arena smelled like roast chicken by the break. They had a crew dressed up, looked like big bird.... he came out and basted them during the concert. Also meaningless.
YES they are! RUSH is to MUSICIANSHIP what the BEATLES are to SINGING!!
I was at this concert. I was red as a lobster the next day at work in the morning.
There is another live version of this song, "The Spirit Of Radio", after "The Best Intro Ever", that is a medley of 6 songs, each from their first 6 albums, all played in the order of release. It is also a great version of TSOR, but this intro with The Rolling Sones "Paint It Black" is great also. As a huge RUSH fan it would be difficult to choose just one! LOL!
Great reaction y’all!! This was SARSStock in Toronto in 2003! There were about 500,000 people there! Rolling Stones headlined hence the intro! The washing machines have a cool story. When Geddy started running his bass thru the soundboard, Alex wanted to keep his stacks. Well, Geddy didn’t like how it offset the stage so, as a joke they brought out the washers and dryers to balance it out! They are actually washing T-shirts that said “I came out of washer #2 at a RUSH Show” (or something) and Alex and Geddy would throw them out to the fans between breaks! Those evolved throughout the years into popcorn popper machines, vending machines and even rotisserie chickens that fed the crew after the show.!! Always the jokesters and keeping the audience entertained!! Be well and God bless… from Texas!!

@@SnowDogisVictorious there’s a photo of them meeting backstage and the expression on Neil’s face is priceless. He was a big fan of Watts, so I find it hard to believe that Neil wouldn’t recognize him, but who knows? A huge venue like that, there’s a lot going on. Charlie came from jazz and blues roots, much like Neil, and Neil had the utmost respect for Mr. Watts.

3 guys who always had as much fun playing as we had waltching/listening to it. Totally agree with your point re them smiling, so were we, There are so many clips of Ged and Lerxt just having fun.
Its so rare that people dont hear that is opening is a rushified "Paint it Black, Rolling Stones". Now, I think it works perfectly, but the whole work is so Rush, its obviousness is removed. I live by this version of the song. It has kept me alive. Rush Forever!
I was blessed to be able to see Rush a few times. The washing machines were up there to take up the place of the speaker/amp stacks that used to be there. As more and more venues provided their own soundstage, Geddy eventually began running his stuff through the stacks behind Alex and thus a void was behind him on stage. They fill it with various equipment to provide for the crew. Sometimes it's laundry equipment, sometimes bbq rotisseries, sometimes popcorn machines. Rush have an incredibly quirky sense of humor, and it shows here! And I appreciate you noticing Alex Lifeson's guitar skills. He's one of the most underappreciated guitarists out there, easily on a par with Eddie van Halen, Steve Vai, or anyone really.

One of my favorite stories is why they did the rotisserie chickens the crew thought it would be funny to have hot chicks on the stage because there aren't a lot of female Rush fans at concerts lol! They thought it was the only way that a hot chick would get on stage

“Off on your way hit the open road, there is magic at your fingers For the spirit ever lingers, undemanding contact in your happy solitude!” ~Neil Peart~ No better description of jammin down the road solo, radio blasting, ever written! 🤘🏻
Absolutely the best trio
45 minute wash + 45 minute dry = 90 min RUSH concert ..... very clever ... they also had rotisserie chicken, 90 minutes to crispy perfection.= 90 min RUSH concert .... very, very clever
The only musician that I've seen smile as often as Rush does onstage (Alex and Geddy, anyway -- The Professor is all business back there, being the greatest drummer of all time requires focus) is our late guitar hero Edward Van Halen. That dude exuded the sheer joy of making music and the love of playing it. Our fellas in Rush are much the same way. It's beautiful. Great reaction as usual!
The intro instrumental was Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones who were headlining that concert. So cool that Rush paid tribute to the legends they were opening for.
In the early analog days of Rush, Geddy had a huge stack of Ampeg SVT amps and cabinets that lined the stage behind him. Later, he began plugging his bass into the main mixer where it was processed. That left the stage behind him pretty empty since he no longer needed amplifiers. Because Rush are crazy and funny guys, he decided to line the stage behind him with coin washing machines. He used them for a couple of tours, then began using many different machines on his side of the stage. He once has rotisserie ovens with chickens in them. One tour he lined his stage with snack vending machine, fully loaded with snacks. They used to also have special one of a kind T-shirts in the washing machines that him and Alex would toss out to the crowd. Those lucky people that caught those shirts had tour shirts that were not for sale anywhere. Only those that caught those shirts had those designs.
Great song and a great performance! Alex just kills it and yes you are right they solo all at the same time. I am going to suggest La Villa Strangiato official music video. This was a very early music video with them playing it live but without an audience. This one has the full song. Yes, I think Alex is a fantastic guitarist as well. Love your reactions, very energetic and fun. Cheers 🇨🇦
First seeing a Rush concert live, in the late 70s , was phenomenal!! Thanks 🙏 for the reaction guys and gal 😉
On that concert. Not only they organized the concert to collect $$ for that epidemic outbreak. The concert was in Toronto, I imagine you already know that. The concert took place in an lf airforce base in the neighbourhood where Alex and Geddy grew up and formed RUSH in the first place. They really played at home in Downsview, North York!
They smile because they love making music together. Alex and Geddy have been friends since 8th grade(sometime in the 1960's?) and Neil has been friends with them both since 1974(?). Friends getting together, making music together, seeing the crowd reaction to the music... What's not to smile be about😀
Please review Red Barchetta. I been listening to Rush for the last 40 years and can't get enough. I'm from Toronto Canada and been fortunate enough to have seen them live in concert. Fantastic.
Geddy Lee has stated that Alex has the ability to sound like 2 guitar players playing at the same time, and that he doesn't know of anyone else in the world who can do that...
Love your reactions. Please please do Rush La Villa Strangiato - Time Machine Tour -Live in Cleveland. This will blow you away!
A lot of people under 8 Alex as a guitar player he is so on point. He plays just enough to get the point across in the music and he has all kinds of different styles and rhythms and he displays them like he did when you did the reggae bit and back into rock that guy's a legend
It's always good to watch your reactions! Rush is off the charts!
I have a very hard time not tearing up when listening to Rush, Neil has a very big influence on my drumming and his books...wow
This is some of the honest songs ever.
the intro is a Rolling Stones song

Paint it Black 👍
Awesome reaction once again. I bet you wouldn't have assumed watching that they considered this performance quite a trainwreck, Neil talks about it in his book of being one of their messiest gigs. Not only was this one of their only festival appearances where they didn't get to use their own crew and were stripped of a lot of their gear, and had ear monitor issues not being able to hear each other, and the audio/video crew in charge of the broadcast didn't have experience with Rush so they had to run a primitive audio mix on the fly as it was a TV event (no post production, Rush didn't get to mix the audio or anything) AND on top of that they had been off tour and not playing for months prior so this was literally a mini-reunion warm-up jam! PS: If you want a good reaction vid and haven't reacted to the song Freewill yet, I am about to upload a new live 1981 version i've been working on restoring probably later tonight or tomorrow, and I think it's going to become the new favorite live Rush clip for a lot of people as it's a perfect performance with a brand new crystal clear audio mix I mixed from original mutli-track files so it's a version literally nobody has ever seen or heard before. :) Keep it up guys love your reactions.
Just for your own enjoyment, get and watch Rush in Rio the documentary. It also has concert footage. 👍
Kick ass 1,000,000 audience 😮😮😊
Love this!
Theu are the Kings of complimenting eachother. This is what you get when you have three guys put their art in front of their egos ❤💚💜. What they needed to feed themselves, creatively, always came first. They made music for themselves first, and everything else came after. Love them for that.
Rush was the king of te show.
I love that you did this one Geddys voice was SO on point. This is my favorite version of Spirit of Radio. ❤️
Love this song. Love this video. The washing machines are an inside joke with the band. Geddy had them up there as his "amplifiers" because of Alex's massive amps. It's so ... Rush. That crowd was amazing. There were almost 500,000 there for 'Molson Canadian Rocks For Toronto,' a benefit in response to the SARS epidemic, in 2003.
Neil wrote about this show in one of his books the brief period of time between rehearsal and show time wore on him being the perfectionist
The song was early 80's and it was Neil's take on staying true to your music 'Glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity' What other lyricist wrote lyrics like that ? What an incredible band.
Geddy (bassist) uses the PA for his amplification. So, they decided to balance the stage by adding props on his side...washing machines here, and they've done stuff like rotisserie chicken cookers in some other shows.
Just found you two and you guys crack me up. Love y’all’s reactions. AND, when I need a morning pick me up or pull up a RUSH song for a newbie, it’s Spirit of Radio. Someone might have already suggested this, but you guys should watch the R30 opening. A montage of early songs that rolls right into SoR. My youngest kid geeks out every time he hears it.

In answer to your question. YES
Don’t touch two wish you grew up in our generation?! Can’t count how many times I saw and snuck into Rush concerts. Love your reactions.
I’ve seen many reviews similar to these and the same songs. These two people truly appreciate and understand music. Don’t need to say much, just watching you both and the raw emotions expressed says everything. The guy might have wiped away a little bit of tears if I’m not mistaken. I felt that after watching Alex’s guitar solo. Powerful!
Thanks for the video RIP Neil Peart. Young kids now have no idea of how much radio was apart of our lives back in the 60's and 70's. Rush best Canadian rock band ever. Lyrically, the song is a lament on the change of FM radio from free-form to commercial formats during the late 1970s. The Toronto-based station CFNY-FM-which had not abandoned free-form programming-is cited as an inspiration for the song
Love your Rush reactions! Keep 'em coming. 😎
I love watching Geddy's reaction during Alex's solo, Ged knows Al is going off!!!
🙋🏿♀️ I think it's time for....... 🤗 La Villa Strangiato! 🥰🐰
To answer your question,Yup!
Right said, Julie! I was at the Rush R30 concert here in Germany and they did it here too. They took Rush tour t-shirts out of the washing machines and threw them into the crowd. Just an awesome idea and yeah- that was a hell of a concert plus the sound was awesome.
basement bands - back in the day in canada, our laundry rooms are all in the basement - where most music began - garages and basements - they began in a neighbours basement - then got kicked out
Bloodred Hourglass- Quiet Complaint! You would love it 🤟
Good question about the attendance. I'd have to ask my phone. Lmao
This song came out around 1979/1980. It freaked me out when i first heard it. These dudes were incredible.
I was at this concert. Amazing bands and vibe the whole time.
Love watching you two truly enjoy discovering Rush.

Times about a million...
Geddy Lee doesn't use amps on his side of the stage, but Alex Lifeson does, so to keep things a bit balanced, they always throw something unique on Geddy's side - I've seen washing machines, rotisserie ovens (complete with a chef!) and large inflatable bunny rabbits.
I was at that concert. SARS fest in Toronto
On the lyrics, you got close. This was both a tribute to the radio and the ability for music to lift us up and inspire us, but at the end it turns on the production side of music with all the compromises that an artist has to make in order to get their music on the radio. You hear that in the 2nd half as they sing... All this machinery making modern music... ... One likes to believe in the freedom of music But glittering prizes and endless compromises Shatter the illusion of integrity, yeah The song itself is written in such a way it is as if you are turning the dial on the radio and moving across multiple stations so you get rock, reggae, heavy metal, pop and some classical throughout the song. At the end of the song, they both quote and parody the lyrics of Simon & Garfunkel's "The Sound Of Silence". Simon and Garfunkel's song contains the lyrics: "For the words of the prophets were written on the subway walls, and tenement halls... and echo with the sound of silence." These are parodied by Neil Peart into, "For the words of the PROFITS are written on the studio wall, and concert halls.... and echo with the sound... of SALESMEN. A joyfull sung on the surface but a poke in the eye to the music industry.

Wow, I love your reviews! Your both awesome!
i'm glad to hear you guys enjoyed this track, but it's actually not a "positive" song, but more of a protest to the record execs of the 80s wanting radio-friendly tracks. this was rush's response to the execs. the music composition does make it sound like a positive happy song, but that's the genius that is rush. also, the several tempo changes in the track kind of gives you the sense of someone changing the station on the radio: very brilliantly executed.
Intro is the stones paint it black.
Intro was “Paint it Black” by the Stones.
And with that you have my Subscription. Rush Army In The House. 😁🤘❤

Epic! 😎
its the time machine tour that` is the time machine
I was there in that front section. Very memorable day. Rush followed The Guess Who, then came AC/DC and The Stones.
The meaning of the song: My take When Rush hit the stage critics were harsh, very harsh especially Rolling Stones Magazine. They ripped them. In my opinion their answer in a way was the release of several very poignant songs aimed directly at the establishment... (Not being accepted on the radio.) Radio big wigs found no purpose in their music yet fans and other countless musicians absolutely loved their music. People couldn't listen to their music (on the radio) they could only listen to it in solitude... But the intro: Begin the day with a friendly voice. A companion, unobtrusive... Invisible airwaves (radio)... All this machinery making modern music. Can still be open-hearted. Not so coldly charted... I could go on but frame it with that perspective in mind while following along with the rest of the lyrics (in many of their songs back then.)
The washer dryer was to also keep time yall. They also had a pop corn machine at one point. RIP professor Neil Peart rush was genius artist. Neil was the lyricist

Washing machines, popcorn machines, rotisseries, vending machines. The real explanation is because Alex used more amps that Geddy did, but Geddy thought that the stage needed a weight balance. So it was decided, as part-humour and part-logic, to place something on his side of the stage. On one tour, someone would come on stage during the show and empty the dryers. On another tour, they would "baste" the chicken on the rotisseries. It was an indication of what the band was. There was a reason they opened their shows with the Three Stooges score. They were, above all else, friends first, musicians and band members second.
The washing machines, sometimes fried chickens, and time machine during that tour are there because Geddy plugs directly into the board so they balance Alex's amps with different props. They also will take t-shirts out of the dryers and throw them to the crowd!
I saw that. They were not tight...but they were "on the break" at the time. I got to see them 53 other times. Regardless, this was a real treat.
Simply AMAZING!
Thanks!

This song was taken from a concert in Toronto which also featured AC DC and as you may have guessed from the intro, The Stones among an all star line up.
3 guys! 3 Effin guys! Ha Ha! I’m an Old School, day one fan. Got to see them in concert 18 times over the decades! RUSH night was always very special. 😁👍
The "washing" machines have Rush t-shirts in them and at the end, Alex and Geddy load a few up into t-shirts guns and fire them into the audience. At least that's what happened during this tour in the early 2000's.
The washer and dryer is a joke on Alex's wall of monitors, geddy said he felt he needed a background as big as Alex's but didn't need the monitor's. He's also used barbeques.
I live in Toronto's was there for this.. The lads killed it!!!

I love your reactions. You get a man's man and a beautiful wife - both with great comments and expressions.
American has its own power trio but most have never hear of them Grand Funk Railroad was ever bit as good as Rush if not better. And I have been a Rush fan since 1974.....GFR fan since 1970. Give a listen to "Inside Looking Out" Grand Funk live
That day as Neil was going to play Charlie Watts the drummer from the Stones approached him to say hi Neil was zoning in on playing and did not recognize him , In the old day back in the 70S before music technology they had huge amps behind them , Geddy and Alex missed that and in fun put the washers and Dryers to replace the Amps speakers
It’s just freaking three guys. Damn!!!
They have FUN! Silly intro, yet deep meaning. Crushing. Ahh yes the dryers.... I feel they took Rolling Stones to the cleaners and every concert literally hang them out to dry. My concept anyway. Love it.
Great reaction. A 33 years old song still powerfull and timeless, always be a master piece. In the '90 in Rush concerts there's a chicken broild Chickens because They try new sounds in the progressive rock and the washmachines because they are clean and Made clean music without samplers or others computers gadgets. Again great reaction
A music critic nailed it when he wrote “ Rush is like watching (listening) to a 3 ring circus “
Their opening was the Rolling Stones “ Paint it Black “ an homage to the Stones who also were at the benefit.
I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but the opening part they played was Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones.
The washing machines is a joke by Geddy to counter Alex's stack of amps! P.S. WELCOME TO RUSH!!
