Rush - Secret Touch bass cover
Музыка
My bass cover of Secret Touch by Rush from Vapor Trails. I'm playing to the remix because it was easier to isolate/remove the original bass track more effectively on this version. Vapor Trails is not generally one of my favourite Rush albums (although the remix is significantly better to listen to without the 10 guitar/bass tracks on every song!) but there are a few gems on the album that I will cover on my channel, and this is the first one I chose to do. I'll do Freeze at some point, but that is a much harder bass part and will take me some time to work out the part in a bit more detail than the very simplified version I have often played over the years.
I really like the live versions of this song, and it would be one of the ones that I would love to go back and see live again. I assume I saw it on The Snakes and Arrows tour in London, but have no recollection of it at all sadly. I think the high energy, heavy rock style of the song is a nice change of pace for one song from a lot of the other stuff on a Rush setlist (even if I prefer the funkier and 'synthier' stuff in general) and I'm glad they chose this one to be one of the tracks from Vapor Trails that was included in multiple live sets.
I've tried to make my version a hybrid of all the different versions of the song that are on the studio and live albums. It's a great one to learn for anyone who wants to practice Geddy's technique because it's prevalent throughout, and also has lots of chords (which I think are easier than single string parts for this style to start off with!)
Hope you enjoy!

Seeing this cover made me appreciate Geddys playing more on this album. The original release sounded so muddy I had a hard time making out the parts and intricacies in Geddys playing. Absolutely phenomenal. Great job blasting this one out.

I totally agree. I find it almost impossible to even hear what geddys doing on most of the album on the original mix. The 2013 version is so much more listenable to my ear and you get a much better sense of all the awesome little details in his playing. Thanks for watching. Will do a new video tommorrow :)
I've watched this over and over again... The attack and the power is equal to Geddy's.

Agree, for Rush it was a pretty dark album and so emotional. As a bassist I love that Ged went full force with employing chords on that album.

I was interested to see what you'd make of the ending, it's kind of hard to tell exactly what Geddy's doing so I started just kinda going for it like he does in the snakes and arrows live version. Love how he just starts hammering the shit out of his E string because he didn't want to stop playing, very relatable 😂
@hemibass
Жыл бұрын
Haha yeah well the album outro sounds like several bass tracks simultaneously so i used the live style more. It's quite short on this version though so not masses of time to jam, I just do a couple of 'improvised' open a string bits. Thanks for watching

Long time listener here, can you do a cover like this with bass up front? Like all other instruments muted?
@hemibass

Hey dude. I don't normally keep all the old recordings, just the final videos. Have you ever used moises? What you can do is put the audio into the software and it will separate all the instruments so you can hear them isolated. Its not perfect, but pretty close! Sorry

Is the proper term for this technique "flamenco"? Just wondering. Have there been/are there other bassists doing something similar?

That's how it's referred to amongst geddy fans (I think based on his description), and it's his signature technique so I think it's as good as any. I called it the 'flicky technique' before I knew about the flamenco name for it :)
