Inspiration -
Throughout my life as a drummer, I've been inspired by the world around me - always in the pursuit of listening, learning, and emulating rhythm and sonic textures - spending countless hours of my life learning about time, feel, groove, patience and discipline from some of the greats.
I remember at the age of 14 years old, living in Utah (we had just moved from the family farm just outside of Innisfail, Alberta, Canada), my friend, Mike Taylor, introduced me to Van Halen. I remember listening to the first song of that record, "Running with the Devil.” It freaked me out a bit. Coming from a religious family I thought, “Holy crap! Should I be listening to this?!” The electric guitar, the bass, that voice and especially those drums - they sounded like they were being hit by giant spatulas.
I was inspired!
I turned to Mike and asked, “What else you got”? "Have you heard of Rush? They're from your Canadian homeland!” I replied, “They’re from Canada? I’ve never heard of them.” He placed the needle on the first song of the album “Permanent Waves”. The song started, the guitar entered, then came the syncopated hits, and then this EPIC drum fill, cascading down the tom-toms! "What the heck was that?!” I continued to listen and as the song ended, I was inspired and my life was changed forever!
Fast forward a few decades... drumming has taken me all over the world, performing in amazing venues and studios with incredible artists, musicians and crew. As I look back at the inspiration in my life, I'm reminded of a few quotes from some of my drumming heroes:
Greg Bissonette (David Lee Roth-Ringo Starr) - “Good composers borrow, great composers steal."
Liberty DeVito (Billy Joel) - "Nobody's walking through the halls in high school humming drum solos. It's all about groove!"
Nudge Chancler (Michael Jackson) - “Taste and space."
Dom Famularo (Global Drum Ambassador) - "Passion = Fuel."
Neil Peart (RUSH) - “The audience doesn’t need to know all the technical stuff, they just need to know that I went through the trouble. Care has been taken.”

True, but this mans tribute is spot on and coming from the right place, (closer to) The Heart! He took the gift Neil gave us all and put it perfect use, not the Steering Wheel “Kit” I’ve played since receiving my license in ‘83, (key: “I like to play!” from Garth). Tell me we wouldn’t ALL be on board for Joel receiving The Call? He speaks the “Pratt” language we only WISH we could 👍🏻 and would be thee perfect “Tribut-Teer”, Cheers!!! Really good cover. The professor can not be duplicated fully. He hits it just a little slightly different than no matter how perfect you are on each role hitting of the snare just a little slight difference. I have yet to hear someone do it exactly the way he does it very close very very close. Still is just a little off. With that said great job but not so duplicatable perhaps he holds the stick just a little bit differently or the head itself is just a little bit different. You just can tell if it’s Pearts 👍

I don't know who this man is, but as a Rush fan since 1978 (I was 13), this is by far the BEST playing of Peart's compositions I have ever heard. I never attempted drumming, but was captivated at a young age by Neil's playing. He was the biggest reason of the trio for Rush being my favorite band of all time. Most Rush cover bands/drummers I turn off in less than 1 minute. I could not stop this until it was over. I think I MAY have heard 1 mistake. Only thing missing was an abbreviated solo. So, please tell this man I'm in awe of his talent. Give this man one of Neil's sets made from that Romanian oak they found in the bog!

Great tribute and fantastic playing. Those drums sound incredible. Also very gracious that a Paiste artist and the brand itself is cool with showcasing an artist so closely associated with Zildjian and latterly Sabian. Great work.

I close my eyes and listen, I would lose a bet because you'd tell me it is Neil and I would believe you, he got every detail, even the sound. Having grown up listening to Rush as my favorite band, being the closest thing to a mad fan and having always been more drawn to drums, I'm on the edge of my chair awaiting for every special fill, and he nails it perfectly every time. If Geddy and Alex wanted to tour again, this guy would not let them down.

Neil. And to think you (Neil) were down the street from my house in Beach City, OH passing through countless times on your bike and I never knew it. Probably passed you and didn't even know it. Great memories. Saw em 10 times in concert. Every one better than the previous. Rarely does someone THAT BRILLIANT get even better with every album. Unbelievable. Thanks Neil. I've watched so many videos of him and the radio has been playing a lot of rush, but, something about this video... hearing Neil, watching what could be Neil but, it's not Neil. Then the credits... still no Neil... Wow, he's really left us. I hope he's hanging out with Ronnie and Randy. 3 of my allstar dream band members are gone. You will never be forgotten. 😥 RIP Neil.

Joel Stevenett, five stars. Thank you and that entire crew for this wonderful tribute. We jammed on Rush eight tracks since the seventies, tore thru cassettes, tons of records, cds, then downloads, 25 concerts...decades...you really made a great thing that'll last forever! Thanks Joel, I loved it, and the drumkit and filming, the sound and selection was great! F*@# Yeah! I set a course just east of lyra, and northwest of pegasus. Flew into a big drum tribute, and Joel really blew our minds. On his crash, a paiste cymbal, wheeling sticks, he hit heads strong. Drum head of the heart of the trio, head strong into history.
