Geddy Lee is a killer bassist Alex Lifeson is one of the best guitarists hands down and Neil Peart was a Master on the drums. Combined they are AMAZING. I've seen them live 8 times here in Canada. This song is from the "Moving Pictures" album released in 1981 (almost 40 years ago), and it is about his anxiety and shyness of dealing with the fans of Rush. The line " I can't pretend a stranger is a long-awaited friend." specifically talks about his feelings. Neil was an intelligent thinking introvert who would prefer to read a book or be on a bike (motorcycle or touring bicycle) by himself. Neil was a very private person (that's why no one knew about his cancer for 3 years), and didn't want to live in the "limelight" of being a rock star. He left the meet & greets to Geddy and Alex. Neil was very much in tune with society at the time around him. His song Subdivisions was about Cliques in High School and how if you weren't with the "in crowd" you were ostracized. The song "Time Stand Still" was about the constant touring they were doing at that time and how he just wanted a break. This song ran true to me at a time in my life where I had to slow down and "just let the tide come around." I had to let time stand still for me, "catch my breath before I start off again." If you listen to "The Garden" the last song on their last album you will hear Neil saying goodbye to the fans and the touring. It was a little prophetic. Rest in Peace Neil. You are the Professor, and you have taught a lot of us so much via your music. Live long Alex & Geddy, you both have had a great run.

Bonham fits Led Zeppelin and their Blues sculpted rock and roll sound. Neil Peart has his own sound also.... technically they were both capable and given time I'm sure Bonham would have become even more technically capable but Neil is a stickler for the rudiments while Bonham was a loud performance driven beast. I'm positive Neil could play circles around John, but sometimes John has a creativity that Neil lacks in some songwriting aspects. He is good at leaving things out and playing simply as needed. Stewart Copeland is also amazing and can sing and play together, just look at the Oysterhead with he, Les Claypool and Tre Anistasio... Now I'm a big fan of Rod Morganstein who is definitely more like Neil, and dare I say is probably overlooked as technically as talented as anyone who plays like Neil but does not play in as groundbreaking a band as Rush... I also am a big big fan of Vinnie Colaiuta who I would purport to be as skilled on a kit as anyone alive. I think at some point you really just have to say that all of these amazing drummers are just fantastic and can probably play anything you throw at them but they like to do the stuff they like to do. I would love to see what people like Portnoy and Danny Carey are actually capable of playing.... like a jazz band with Danny Carey LOL!

The reason I think Neil is best is his versatility, you compared him to Bonham, and said you thought Neil could play Bonham's parts. I think Neil could have played in any band you could name and play as well as their drummer with maybe a week to practice. I don't think anyone could replace Neil as the drummer in Rush. (We wont even include lyrics at this point.) That point made, I don't think Neil could replace any particular drummer to form a band's sound. His innovation would always sound like Rush, as his personality and intellect shaped his sound. The same goes for any of the big name drummers, or any musician for that matter. Carl Palmer may have come close, but would still have developed a different sound. Every artist has their own feel for what they do, and cannot be replaced while a band is finding itself, without changing the essential nature of the band. Rush without Neil wouldnt have been Rush, Led Zeppelin without Bonham wouldn't have been Led Zeppelin, The Police without Copeland wouldn't have been The Police, etc.

Walking towards 60 myself and have been a musician since my birth. The band Rush and everything associated with them are Marvels and works of Miracles. The bands story alone is worth the 30 days of reflection, not including the personal victories in each members personal life. To be blessed (as a drummer/percussionist) I myself have only 2 other groups that compare or even measure up to the team of Rush. For me Neil, Alex, Geddy and the infamous and FANTASTIC road crew Family of all things Rush. Ive seen them 13 times since the 70s, pre 2112. Caress of Steel and Farewell to Kings are 2 albums that will set you up for a Rush journey you will adore for a lifetime. If you still have a pulse by the time you reach the Hemispheres album (Priceless Piece...Rembrandt Like), you may end up going to sleep by being reassured by "The Garden". A song on one of the last couple albums they as a group performed and shared with those of us who are forever changed by the intent, the love and the FAMILY atmosphere ONLY a Rush fan will understand. I miss Neil very much and his desire for Life, the band members trust, faith and SUPPORT for their brother Neil is without bounds. Thank you for your support of my friends and dear MASTERS of their art...RUSH. Gods best friends. ❤😎👀🎶 🙊🙉🙈

I'm sorry but I never considered RUSH as progressive rock. I started listening to them in the early 70's. And we concerned them as a rock band. But I do agree that in the 80's they probably influenced a lot of progressive rock bands. Just another piece of the puzzle that is RUSH!!!
