It's fantastic they played this piece on this tour. It's one of their more abstract constructions, not as "popularly digestible," one might say. They put it out there -- and everyone gets it.

That's an interesting point. I always felt that this song's arrangement had a different feel & style to certainly the rest of the Permanent Waves album but had never thought about the classical music angle.

Two of the best memories I have are when I saw Rush perform this in 1980 and then again in 2015. I think Jacob's Ladder got the most applause of any song they did that night in 2015. It was so unexpected and beautiful that my eyes emitted lacrimal fluid.

What an excellent tune from a truly exceptional show. If you haven't yet, you need to watch the R40 show in its entirety. They start with a huge elaborate stage set up and as they travel backwards through time, the set keeps getting smaller and smaller, until they are down to an amp apiece. A nice tribute to humble beginnings!

Neil said that it was strange to see pictures of himself looking serene on stage when it was like a storm going on inside. The odd time stuff going on after the mid song breakdowni in alternating 6/8 7/8 is the most challenging part to me because of the way Neil places his accents. This is one of their best albums if not the best.

I enjoy the live performances more so than the album myself as you can see how multi talented they are. Watching Geddy play the bass with his hands and the synth with his feet. They really capture the essence of a thunder storm. Fantastic song! Neil was a real nature lover. He spent a lot of time outdoors hiking, biking, snow shoeing and cross-country skiing Another suggestion is Earthshine live in Rio I really recommend Geddy's book My Effin Life. It is a great read and also has some great pictures as well. Cheers

This song wasn't played on stage for decades and the older live versions are arguably much heavier and darker. Really not too deep lyrically here it was mainly an exercise in descriptive writing. The music is pretty exceptional as always like when Alex plays those subtle synth chords after he rips out his lead solo and then when Geddy switches to the keyboards Alex and him share duties on the Taurus bass pedals for that unearthly bottom end. In concert the low end on this song and a few others had that ‘pants flap’ feel where you could feel it moving through your body more than it was loud and you could hear it.🤘🖖✌️🥁🎸🎹🎤

But around 2000 i discovered the Sopranos and probably watched it 15 times, so definitely very heavily influenced by that show in all different kinds of ways. So great observation 😄
