Rush - Freewill Drum Fills - A Neil Peart Drum Tutorial

Музыка

Neil Peart was my #1 influence when I first started playing drums almost 40 years ago. For 3 years, there was nobody else. I devoured everything I could find about Neil Pearts drumming. I learned how to transcribe drum parts by doing lots of tunes from Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures & Signals. So when Alan2112drums asked me to do a Neil Peart Tutorial on his fills in Freewill, I thought that was a great idea! I brushed up on it this week, including uploading me working out the parts at my insurance office (yes, I have a drumkit there).
So my first Neil Peart Drum Tutorial explaining his most famous fills (to me) in the song Freewill. Let me know in the comments what other songs by Rush that you’d like a tutorial on Neil’s parts (Grooves or fills). I have plans to do the ones that impacted me the most so stay tuned for them!
Be sure to watch til the end… I’m a klutz :)

Masterworks specs:
The kit is basically in Pearl Reference Specs except all have at least 2 plies of mahogany on the inside (which is stained red) and adding 4 plies w/ the floor and even more mahogany with the Gong & kicks. The rest of the plies in each are maple except for the snare.
Snare (Mic’d with Audix i5)
14x5.75". 10 ply, 12.5mm "Regular" - 2 inner Birch, 7 ply Maple in the middle, 1 ply outer Bubinga. It also has the triple snare throw off. This thing looks amazing and lets you choose 3 different 6 strand snares allowing you to mix and match all of them. However, I've been using a 24 strand one from another Pearl snare for years.
Toms (Mic’d with Audix D2)
6x7" Rack Tom - 6 ply, 7.5mm "Regular"; 2 inner Mahogany, 3 ply Maple in the middle, 1 outer Bubinga; Edge is Rounded 45 degree
8x7.25" Rack Tom - 6 ply, 7.5mm "Regular"; 2 inner Mahogany, 3 ply Maple in the middle, 1 outer Bubinga; Edge is Rounded 45 degree
10x7.75" Rack Tom - 8 ply, 7.2mm "Thin"; 2 inner Mahogany, 5 ply Maple in the middle, 1 outer Bubinga; Edge is Rounded 45 degree
12X8.5" Rack Tom - 8 ply, 7.2mm "Thin"; 2 inner Mahogany, 5 ply Maple in the middle, 1 outer Bubinga; Edge is Rounded 45 degree
13x9.5" Rack Tom on left - 6 ply, 7.5mm "Regular"; 2 inner mahogany, 3 ply Maple in the middle, 1 outer Bubinga; Edge is Rounded 45 degree
Floor Toms (Mic’d with Audix D4)
14x13" Floor Tom - 8 ply, 10mm "Regular"; 4 inner Mahogany, 3 ply Maple in the middle, 1 outer Bubinga; Edge is Rounded 45 degree
16x15" Floor Tom - 8 ply, 10mm "Regular"; 4 inner Mahogany, 3 ply Maple in the middle, 1 outer Bubinga; Edge is Rounded 45 degree
Gong Drum (Mic’d with Audix D6)
20x15"- 8 ply, 10mm "Regular"; 7 ply Mahogany, 1 ply Bubinga on the outside. Fully Rounded Edge. Finish is a fade from the head down instead of the burst like the rest b/c of it being single headed
Kick Drums (Mic’d with Audix D6s)
22x17 kicks. 10 ply, 12.5mm "Regular"; 6 inner are Mahogany - BOOM!! The middle 3 plies are Maple and the outside Bubinga.
Overheads (Mic’d with two Audix SCX-25A)
Cymbals from left to right:
17” Sabian Xtreme China regular finish
10” Zildjian K Splash
14” Hi-Hats: K Custom Session (Steve Gadd model)
19” Zildjian K Dark Crash
20” K Custom Session Ride (Steve Gadd model)
14” Zildjian Mastersound as second hi-hat
18” Zildjian A Custom Crash

Jeff, thank you so much for doing these videos. I too am a big Neil Peart fan (like a lot of drummers) and have been trying to learn a couple of his songs, including Freewill. It's nice to have the sheet music, but often seeing videos like this, or having a drum teacher helping you break down parts and slowly playing them so can really see the sticking and movement is so helpful. Thanks!

Right on, Michael, thanx man! Well I plan on doing more, I've got a list going which will mainly be the ones that I grew up with thru Power Windows. After that I went in other directions so I'm not nearly as familiar with much after that like I am the early stuff. Any requests?

After all the complicated material you've masterfully demonstrated over the years, only the "Professor of the drum kit" could provoke a "crash landing" ( I actually laughed out loud!).That was awesome!!

Great job love your videos definitely learned something I didn’t know! I really like the way you laid out your video. It was very helpful. Easy to relate to for me. I’ll be checking out some of your other videos. This is the first time I’ve came across you on KZread. And I love that you don’t edit everything out perfectly. Take care God bless.

Nice breakdown of the material. Great advice on slowing thigs down. I used to find myself playing a bit quicker to get the content I was learning - mistakes and all - but slowing it way down has really helped me in two areas: Understanding the structure of the rhythm; Cementing the note postions on the 'grid'. At times I do find slowing down some content a little more challenging to play than at faster or actual tempos, but spending that time in the slow-zone makes me lock in more deeply/accurately and thus it helps produce better results in a bit less time than just plowing through.

slow is the best way! fortunately I was taught that early so like you said, didn't learn the mistakes. plus I think the slower you work it up, its so much CLEANER the faster you get it, which in turn SOUNDS faster. thanx for hanging with me thru all this!

Fantastic job! I’m very happy to have found your channel, man. Your kit sounds as good as pretty much any that I’ve heard. Those toms…..delicious. You mentioned Jim Handley on one of your videos….the kit tour, I believe. I knew him when he lived here in Connecticut back in the 80’s. He was a great drummer then, and an even better guy. He must be an absolute monster now. Anyway, again- great job. I enjoy your stuff very much.

Thanx Russ!! Yes, brother Jim!! He's everything you mentioned. He's the drummer for Resurrection - a Journey Tribute. I'm his first sub (which he hasn't needed since 2016) but he lets me sit in with the band anytime my wife and I go see them. He's played this kit before and gave me the splash and a bunch of heads he wasn't using. The 14 & 16 emperors in this video are ones he gave me a few months ago. I even texted him about 20 minutes after filming this to ask a Larrie Londin question b/c I knew he would know!

Thanx Michael! I'm going to be doing a video soon on how I tune the kit but for now I can tell you that all the bottom heads are a little bit higher than the tops and I've been told/picked on by several friends that my toms are higher than what most people do. I did a video a few years ago on the tunebot and I think I kind of cover tuning (in general) on that video. Here's the link and I hope to have a regular tuning video done sometime soon: kzread.info/dash/bejne/e46T17mHZdiWaNY.html
