I just bought two of these to be delivered next week Thanks for the +48 one risk heads up I did notice the lack of input connectivity on the front but assumed that a patch bay was considered in its construction But to clarify Are you saying the Newton applies phantom power to XLR mic and trs line is this true with ts line in feeds as I see the combo jack and assumed balanced or unbalanced would work I would hope my radial gear would convert to proper impedance for direct hi z guitar, bass if needed, thanks It was two of these or one shelford given my budget

Actually on second thought the patch bay would not help with the combo input I actually am not found of those I suppose they have their place My Apollo x racks have them They seem to be the in thing but how does one extend a combo jack to the front end or a patch bay without choosing either or? That’s a adapter well needed to be designed Something that plugs in to the 1/4” and xlr at the same time for extension I’ve not seen such a beastie

@@gitarman666Hey, this is Aggi from the video. Just like with any mic input, using a DI box to record a guitar shouldn't be a problem. I'm not sure if I see a reason to plug in a TS cable directly. I hope that's helpful 😊 Cheers!

Hi Aggi, I actually sent the newtons back and received 2 Shelfords yesterday, I wonder if two units are necessary I realize a single unit could not allow for stereo tracking but are there additional advantages? I noticed that both outs can be used simultaneously and so I thought I could balance the db and feed each side to establish processing on the 2 bus as both setting would be identical I also picked up a Audient asp880 to increase I/o while using my Apollo x rack, just so you are aware of my setup, thanks for your time

Congratulations on your two Shelfords! Yes, you can absolutely use them on your 2bus. And it is possible to use the outputs like you mentioned. I'm sure you will be very happy with the Shelford. I was also considering a second one.

“All that money” is a relative term, no? Now in my 60s and not to bear pretentious but I’ve made a very comfortable living as a studio and touring player Time to sit in the chair so why not learn on the outboard that seem to litter every album that inspired me from childhood to adulthood These are the boxes I’ve only heard engineers talk about and seem to be staples in every studio of note I have ever had the good fortune to visit and track at Neve, Api, SSL, Pultec,Eventide, Lexicon, 2-Universal Audio Teletronix La2As, Roland, Genelec, Melotron, Neuman, Manley, AKG, and more all bought and paid for I will enjoy the next, perhaps last leg of my musical career and leave behind a treasure trove of legendary gear and hopefully some more music to inspire the ones to follow But thanks for your concern for my finances

There’s no end to the money that can be spent on real estate fast cars consoles mics and outboard - I have all of the above. Note: these units were not used on those albums you remember.

Great comparison. I have two newtons and think they are fantastic. Since there is no dedicated ‘line’ input I have found myself using the ‘mic pre’ gain to drive line level signals in order to obtain more colour by hitting the units harder. What do you think of this? I know Neve recommend keeping mic gain at 0db for mixing but it’s difficult to drive the units without adding this additional gain. Thanks!

Great to hear that you are happy with your Newtons! Of course, as long as you are not clipping your converters on the way back in, driving the units a bit harder makes perfect sense. After all, that's what the additional -6 dB output is made for. But keep an eye on your gain staging if you are boosting your line level significantly more than 6dB 😊

Excellent. I’m using an Apollo twin and have found that because of the significant headroom available in the Newton (and the not so significant headroom available in the Apollo) that really driving the units hard with ‘mic gain’ on line levels up to around 15-20dbu while using the ‘main out’ from the Newton alongside a -20db pad on the Apollo to be the real sweet spot in obtaining levels around -6dbfs on the way back in through the Apollo’s converters with very low noise floor. Thanks again for your reply.

@@adamin37I just purchased a Newton and am also using an Apollo twin and I was wondering if I should bypass the Apollo’s converters or what. Found your comment to be very helpful I’m excited for my newton to arrive.

  • @adamin37

Hi pal, I would not bypass the apollos conversion but rather pad it down by 20db upon input (and have the Apollo’s ‘mic gain’ set to 0) to allow it to handle such hot levels being output by the Newton’s transformer outputs without clipping the A/D converters. As mentioned above, I would almost always use the -6db output on the Newtons to further assist with this. Last thing I would say is; do not be afraid to boost line levels significantly with mic gain to obtain saturation. If it sounds good, it is. I hope you enjoy your new purchase. If I’m honest; these are so brilliant that they have changed the way I record, mix and listen to music forever. When you know your equipment is truly the best it can be; you can rest assured that whatever you are recording will not only be captured faithfully but also enhanced sonically. This is fun :) Peace!

good video. I am right now deciding on a mic pre. This video was helpful. I am also reviewing RND 500 series and comparing them to these 19inch racks. I liked the shelford pre more in your video. And yes a lack of line is can be a bit of an issue if you want to use newton for both mic pre and mixing. I wondering what can be the workflow for doing both with a line input. Could you also do a detailed video on shelford channel? Thanks

Hey! Im the guy in the video 😊 Thanks for your comment! I agree that the most obvious differences in this comparison are between the Neves and RME with the Neves being closer to each other. The Newton does sound a little brighter though. Some might say that it has more "height". The Shelford is thicker. You can try to listen to the decay of the kick. Interestingly, the +6 version of the Newtown is a little thicker, too. But yes, these are subtle differences. In such cases I always make a row of blind tests to make sure that I'm not imagining things. There's a free plug called HOFA Blindtest 4U that's great for these kinds of comparisons. If you want to dig deeper you can download the files. It won't let me post the link here but you can google "RND Newton bonedo". It's in German but it should be easy to find the files 😊 Cheers!
