What are some of the most important features you look for when purchasing a new product?

I own the Shelford Channel and will most likely pick up another one. As great as it is, I still miss a 4th band on the EQ. The Newton is even more limited in the EQ section so I`ll pass for sure. With that said, I look for quality of build, and of course great sound which is what the Shelford is.

I LOVE Rupert Neve Design stuff. It's simply wonderful gear. Rupert said with his RND equipment (especially the console) he finally achieved what he was looking for. Also, even though Rupert is no longer with us in person, all is well with RND. He praised his team who still developes the gear so you know, even though Rupert is on a new journey, RND gear is in GREAT hands and will be around for a long time :) This makes me smile!

Great man, great company, great legacy and product line. Only downside is the cost of entry. It stings, but you get what you pay for. And the option to build a mini 5088 with smaller more affordable modules is fantastic. Fantastic ecosystem.

My post from Gearspace... Well I just got my Newton and ...how can I say this... it is what they said it is. I dont own the Shelford but I don't think I need one more than I want one after getting the Newton. Everything, and I do mean everything sounds good thru it. The most shocking part of this equipment is the Compressor!! This hits waaay over its weight class and I would even say I don't NEEEED a CL1B now.. But Im probably still going to get one of those too. If anyone is complaining about what it doest have or do, just understand that this is a NEW from scratch channel done with modern technology and in my opinion it does not need to do what the shelford does because you can get the same results...just quicker... and cheaper. The Shelford is still a very impressive piece and If money was no object I would buy one just because. The sound is pure neve or not so Neve if you desire it with this thing and the EQ does not disappoint either. This could easily go on a desert Island list. I highly recommend this if your a 1073 fan or a Shelford fan and want the sound of both without the hefty price of both. I know I will get some hate for saying that but hey who cares as long as it does what I want it to do. It will leave your jaw dragging on the ground if you have any real talent or experience with high end gear like this.

Is the input transformer coupled? Are the voltage rails equivalent to the 500 series RND gear or the RND Shelford series? Are the EQ knobs detented? I’m assuming the compressor is not diode based. Is it?
I really love the tonal versatility it offers. No need to buy an additional preamp for every kind or color or tone. This gets close enough to any kind of preamp tone I would want 90%of the time. I agree it's fantastic for electric guitar, but my favourite is what it did for the bass. Such a good piece of kit!

Can you give me some advice? would love to see a video on this... I want to buy a pair of compressors and I only have enough money to do it once. call it a cap of $1000 per channel. i could go a bit above but prefer not to. I was planning on some 1176 clone but found the RND 543 and am thinking maybe its better to get a neve product over a clone. its cheaper than a wes audio mimas but i dont see anyone really talking about it.
Trying to decide between one of these or a dual bae mpf. Need some help lol
You’ve convinced me to buy this over the LA610, which I’ll probably still buy later. It’s that EQ and the electric guitars that really put this one over for me. Would love a proper vocal demo, a ribbon mic demo, and something like a C414 with Omni and figure of 8 demonstrations but you’ve already convinced me anyway. I’ll let you know after a few weeks testing.
I already have one and thinking of buying another unit in order to use them for mixbus duties ? Is it worth it … buying the RND MBT would be wayyy more expensive…

I am kind of curious how these units would sound on a full mix, and what the saturation would add to it, with or without all the tracks being processed with these units. Neve hardware opens up the high end, but the transformers certainly do so too. I think this could be a wonderfull hardware to give the mix a little bit mojo and spice it up a bit. the rest could be easily done in the box, but in my experience saturation is best on hardware. Digital transformer processing is never as great as the real thing. Since tape saturation isn't a thing for many people, getting some warmth and saturation from outboard gear is really making digital signasl sound good
I would really like you to do the same performance via the Audient console. This review is great. I do, however, see a wonderful opportunity for an additional show and tell here

Hi Warren, in tracking to your DAW, would you use this while recording or would you tend to record totally dry first and then send it back out through this Neve? Obviously if you record with EQ and compression on the way in, there’s no going back! Or would you just use this during recording as a subtle preamp so that it just fixes a few issues without really altering the sound drastically?

I have two shelfords, 2 portico channel strips, 2 LA-610's. I sold all other pres and strips. I was going to add 2 britstrips by heritage or BAE pre / eq and get pairing with SSL bus +. Probably sell the LA-610's. From a quick listen these Newton's sound different than the Shelfords. I almost think these might be different flavor than sholfords and portico sounds. I see they are stripped down versions but the pre's also sound different? I think getting some flavor of 1073 and API would be nice. However for the same price as the Heritage Britstrip (which seems like a cheaper version of the shelford with a more 1073 pre sound) I should get these and some API's. How close are the pres to the shelford and is the Newton better quality than the Britstrip? Will the Britstrip be closer to the 1073 they are modeled after?

I have issues with the pricing. They say it'll be around 2 k, which sounds good. But I do wonder how 2 k is possible for a unit that does Pre, EQ and Compressor all in one, without sacrificing something. One doesn't buy RPD if one wants to sacrifice anything, right? A simple Neve 1073SPX mono costs 1.789 €, the Neve 1081 Classic horizontal even costs 3999€. Both of these are PreAmp + EQ. So how come you can get most of that plus a compressor for 2k? Surely it must be a compromise of some sorts, right? Personally I will probably get the Neve 1081 once I can afford it (IF I can afford it one day). If they'd make a pure Pre-Amp for 700 Bucks that does the same thing as the '73 or '81 I'd buy it in two heartbeats. PS: The smaller version, the Neve 1073N Mono Mic Pre, EQ (no comp) costs 2059.
@Producelikeapro
Жыл бұрын
So much of the pricing is taking by casing etc. AS someone who's been involved in designing gear I can tell you that a case can be a HUGE part of it. So, it doesn't;t just get a certain percentage cheaper because a certain amount of gear is removed. What they've done is concentrate on the things that people use all the time and want. It sounds superb and I'm very impressed! That's all that matters to me, how it sounds!

A stereo setup of these will still set you back almost $4000. I think I'll have to stick with my JHS Colour Box a while longer.

Stereo set of Shelford is nearer $7k to $8k so these are good value for ‘the basics’ and most used features. Pair of used P2Cs also much more at nearer $5 to $6k

Yes, at the mix stage, there’s tons of way to shape your sound afterwards. All comes down to your process, do you want to shape the sound on the way in? Commit?

Man, I am a drummer and I couldn't stay... next time please, please ask a real drummer to do even a "simple beat". This poor guy, who is not a drummer, is just murdering the drums.
