Rupert Everett's varied acting career has involved starring in Hollywood films as diverse as My Best Friend's Wedding, Shrek 2 and The Importance of Being Earnest. Rupert has a rigidly conservative background and feels that much of his own life has been a reaction against it. Following the recent death of his father six months ago, he wants to investigate the paternal side of his family.

Rupert visits his mother Sara to find out more about his father Tony's early life. He discovers that Tony's father Cyril worked in Nigeria for the Colonial Service. Sara has a photograph of Cyril as a two-year-old and tells Rupert that the family believe he was brought up by two aunts in Hammersmith. Rupert wants to find out more about Cyril's life and what he was doing in Nigeria. Rupert tracks down records which chart Cyril's career in the Service and discovers just how important a role he held in Nigeria. But what about Cyril's childhood? Rupert decides to search the online census records and unearths some very unexpected information. This is the start of a rollercoaster investigation into fathers and sons which Rupert describes as like an Ealing comedy, with its twists, turns and surprise relatives popping up. Rupert reflects on the ripple effects of broken relationships across the generations. On social mobility, both up and down, broken rules, abandonment, rebellion, convention and secrecy.

It's so odd when you discover that your maybe static idea of your elders doesn't correspond to family lore. He's wonderfully philosophical about it.

Absolutely! I discovered my "proper" grandfather had been married and divorced TWICE in the 1920's, before marrying my grandmother. He had a daughter from his first marriage who was kept a secret to extended family. Knowing my gma knew about this child all along was another shock- maybe even the reason he didnt see his daughter. I wasn't sure whether to be appalled at how my beloved grandparents hid truth (gpa only gave money to the child's mother once a yr, never any more of a relationship) or happy that I found 2 new half first cousins!
That inheritance wasn't tiny. He could have made sure that his common-law wife was looked after AND made sure his son wasn't in dire need. It's a great pity that he lacked that spark of fatherly concern for his own child

she was already looked after her family home is currently work 12 million! She was extremely wealthy and abandoned her out of wedlock child

I absolutely love Rupert's eyes.
I don't think it was mid life crisis of Fred. He was lonely and far away from his family. Rose was there at the moment. She was an actress so I imagine she was attractive.
Confusing the terms "ancestor" and "descendant" in the description there?
Would his lover Rosemary, have passed on all those possessions to his son if she knew she was dying? Did Rose have children with Fredderick?
No, Rupert. He just let himself fall under the stupidest saying “Men will be men” and one which women let happen. He was a cheater and left his son fatherless.

He sounds awfully bitter there... This poor guy had nothing to do with it and was kind enough to share family photos. :-(

Yes you love who you love but clearly this was a case of abandonment.
