Here are some tips for running this engine. After learning the best operation it starts and runs well. It is very well made, I'd be pleased if I had built it.

As a child in the early fifties I can still remember the neighbor's farm using this type of engine to run his dairy barn generator. It fascinated me then and still makes me smile. Thank you. Jim

It's 2020 and I've run across a few still being used in irrigation systems and on oil wells.
5:00 A scaled up version of this engine was/is commonly used in China to power a multi-function two wheel tractor and they sound like this! The engine is cooled the same way, water is poured into the top of the engine and it boils away, topped up when needed. I lived in China for about 10 years with my first trip in the early 1990's and these two wheeled tractors connected to another two wheeled frame were everywhere putt putting along hauling everything.
I love how fires more often when you put a load on the engine, and less when it idles.

That's how hit-and-miss are supposed to work, they're RPM based so if you put more load on them they slow down quicker and fire more often. For a long time they were THE option for shed power generation.
@Nighthawke70
5 жыл бұрын
That is how flyball or flybar governor engines operated. If RPM's drop below a certain preset, the flyball assembly pulls back together, making a bar close the exhaust valve, causing the engine to fire.
@henryhenry903

Nighthawke70 actually most mechanical governors control either the throttle plate (gasoline engines) or fuel rail (diesel engines) if they controlled the exhaust valve that engine would be extremely hard on fuel and would burn exhaust valve seats constantly
@henryhenry903

Isaacs Random Videos they spark every time the piston reaches tdc compression stroke the difference is whether or not there’s any fuel to ignite with that spark, that engine will have a trigger reading a set timing point that will make it spark every time it passes the trigger
nice to see more stuff on your bench, particularly the wren; looks great!
Very nice engine seen your other builds all fascinating how you do everything 👍👍👍
FWIW: I lived in Dade County, Florida from 1988 to 1995. Sometime during those years my wife and I went to a fair [?] of some kind in Homestead, Florida. I do not remember exactly what this fair was about. What I DO remember is there were old engines of various types for on display. At least one of them was a full-size hit and miss engine, and it was running. That was the first time I ever knew these engines even existed.
I love this type of engine. Grew up hearing them running on oil leases in SW NY state in the 70's and early 80's.

A very neat demonstration model. Not many (if any) reached Australian shores... Most home generators I have seen and used were 4 stroke diesel and paired with 240VAC generators producing 4, 7, or 10kva, the exhaust was sent to a 200 litre (45 gallon oil drum) buried 6 feet under the ground to become an effective silencer... I am 77 and worked as a plantation manager in Papua New Guinea from 1970 to 1998 growing coconut nucifera (Pacific Island tall) to make coconut oil and Theobroms tree varieties to produce cocoa for chocolate... I would love a model to reside with me on my coffee table and run it regularly...

TY for posting . I've allvvays been curious about H&M engines & have read they vvere much more common from the turn of the century until the 1940's & used to povver a lot of appliances out in areas that didnt have electricity & vvere a vital & common part of everyday life . Over the last century vve've made so many technological leaps every decade that systems like this get forgotten about unfortunately. That this engine is air cooled but has an area to add vvater to to cool it during longer runs is a great idea, I vvish all 4 stroke engines vvere capable of this . TY again for the demo & still suprised @ hovv lovv the rpm's could go & still keep vvorking.

Bigger weights work nice on this unit.
A nice litte engine runs well!
I recommend standard gas + oil mixture, like the one you use for chainsaws with just a lil bit more oil in the mixture, like instead of 50:1 something like 30:1. Using lighter fuel fools the spark plug and creates a lot of build up in the piston + cylinder.
lovely presentation, thats a lot of anodising.
I've seen larger engines like this running, never knew they were called "hit and miss", but it kind of makes sense. Interesting to see how the governor slides a catch across to hold the value open until it slows down enough to release and cause it to fire again.
@Wingnut353
5 жыл бұрын
That specific mechanism is hit & miss... many similar engines have a more modern governing mechanism I've seen them both ways it will sound smoother with a modern govenor. So, hard to say if what you saw was hit&miss... unless you remember the distinctive hitting and missing sound which you can hear when it hits, then looses RPM for a bit then hits again. Here in the US at least around here (NC) we have farm days etc.. where people bring their old engines, tractors etc.. and run them, there's a big stationary10hp diesel one lunger that runs a cotton gin also shakes the ground a bit when it fires.
@Pete856
5 жыл бұрын
@@Wingnut353 The engines I've seen at shows etc. run like this one, were they only fire as required....so I'd say they were hit and miss. Obviously modern engines use governors to limit fuel on each and every power stroke to maintain a set rpm.
So cool !
Looking forward to winning... Hehe holding thumbs

We have an old engine show every year in the small town 30 miles from us. Most of the people that live there work in our town. You can buy and restore hit and miss engines or buy them from people getting out of it. They have built a mock town complete with railroad and everything there. Call it the Henry Ford Museum of the North. I wouldnt buy that banggood modern version. The original is more fun. We have many farmers around that used them so the show usually gets alot of them. My favorite are the steam tractors. Our family owned one years ago to farm for potatoes.
These are really interesting engines. Have you ever considered building one from scratch?

@@twizz420 I rarely had access to electrical outlets at college, my first job was out in marshland, and a small engine would have been brilliant for that. Also, when you need a phone charger in class or at work it would be pretty funny. You could have it as a phone charger, or a pencil sharpener. And yes, I do have a power bank, in fact I have multiple power banks.If I go out on my bike to a big meet up, or event I will sometimes use my helmet camera, which can drain 3 power banks, just to recharge once. So this would be fantastic for that.

@NCF8710

@@dave-in-nj9393 An alkaline battery should not leak at all. An insidious property of these batteries is that they will leak while still providing power. This is evident when used in TV remote controls. By the time you realize that the batteries are getting weak (reduced range), they have already started to leak and cause damage. It is prudent to remove the batteries from a device when you are through using it. This, however is not practical when the batteries are used in standby devices such as remote controls, thermometers. digital multimeters, etc. Also, Duracell is not the only culprit. I have had Eveready Energizers and house brand alkaline batteries leak too. I will not use alkaline batteries in any device worth more than the batteries themselves. I use rechargeable NiMH batteries (Eneloop) or Eveready Ultimate Lithium batteries in valuable devices. I also use lithium ion batteries in devices that can handle their higher voltage such as high power LED flashlights. I have not had any of these batteries leak and cause damage.

Hit & Miss: 2 stroke fires every revolution; 4 cycle fires every 2 revolutions; H&M is 4 cycle, but governor holds exhaust valve open during over speed (intake valve spring closed, vacuum open), so sound is random pops inserted in a lot of whoosh whoosh whoosh.

@epiphonium

I had to go look that up. 2stroke is counting up and down as 2 strokes and that is one rotation. 4 stroke is counting the same way but makes 2 rotations. Gets way more complicated with multi cylinder engines.

This is an absolutely amazing engine! I am a big fan of all engines, big or small, and I have a couple 2 stroke weedwackers I am fixing up that I found in my neighbors' trash. I have always wanted a desktop size internal combustion engine model that is fully functional. And this engine for $215.99, I would say that is very well priced, because usually an engine like that would be a whole lot more expensive! As soon as I get a job and have enough money, I am DEFINITELY gonna buy one of these. This engine is like a work of art, it is amazing!

You could sell a few small engines and buy one. I do the same thing. Buy and fix old lawn equipment then resell it. I use the money to buy RC Planes, boats, cars. I had a scale steam engine at age 13. I traded it for all my hotwheels stuff.
@nascarsimracing1
5 жыл бұрын
@@scottfirman Yes! I was thinking of starting a craigslist business where I fix lawn equipment. It seems like lots of people just throw out their gas powered lawn tools that won't start, when the problem is just that the engine needs a simple carburetor adjustment. That's all my weedwackers needed to fix the issue my neighbors stated with both, which was that they wouldn't start, or would bog down when throttled. But, I don't really want to sell engines, because I fall in love with my engines, and once that happens, I just can't get rid of them. I think when I am older, I am gonna have a huge collection of engines, because I will have gotten soo many and just won't be able to get rid of them without shedding a tear. Also, I think that's really cool that you had a scale steam engine at age 13! I'm 16, and I have always wanted a scale internal combustion engine, but other kids my age want iphones, and xboxes and stuff like that. I heard a saying that "kids need more toolbox, and less xbox" and I totally agree with that. Spring has come, and everyday I come home from school, and go straight to the garage, where i play with my weedwackers, starting them and revving them just to hear the sound of them, and I seriously can't wait until the grass starts growing so that I can start the mowing season of 2019. Now, back to the thing about selling engines, even though I quickly become attached to my engines, I think I would like to try and find some engines, maybe at the scrap yard, or at curb sides, wherever i can find them, fix them up, and then sell them. That would be alot of fun, and it would help me save up for this amazing desktop sized scale model hit & miss engine. Thank you for the idea! Have a nice day!
Finally! A hit/miss engine that WILL fit my Honda! LOL :)
I love this little sucker.
How to describe this in one word: fancy
