Running Stairs - New Training Impact On Home Soil

Спорт

Let's talk about training! Okay, at least a training session. I explored my home soil area in the past weeks and what I found was a really nice and step stairway through the vineyards close to my door. Find out in the video how and why I do my run training there and how the session looks like!

Good to see sportsmen doing 'normal stuff' without all these gadgets and technology. At the end it is all about the impact the training has on your body and mind so that you are prepared to compete. It is hard to believe that this could be the case if you do not break the routine.

Hi Sebi. I've avoided hills and stairs especially because of issues I've had with my Achilles. I know you have too so how do you manage that? What advice do you have for how to NOT aggravate any tendinopathy?

It’s interesting because I did the same thing. I tried to avoid any hills if possible. At the beginning of last year my new coach suggested the exact opposite. I did a lot more hills, my coach even shuttled me back down... Technique is very important here, but if it is not in an acute state I would actually try do run uphill, maybe start on a treadmill with 5% incline.

@@SebastianKienleTriathlete Ok but only because you said so :) I'll also of course ease into it and not just do a HM @ 5% ;)

Hi Sebi, like u in the past i was struggling with achilles tendon problems. Hope your tendons are ok now but...do u think session like this or running uphill is dangerous for 'ours' achilles ?? are there session u still avoid to preserve your tendons? thx a lot...

  • @SebastianKienleTriathlete

Hi Fabio, both of my achilles are fine now. It’s difficult to give an advice without knowing your special case. But I think training on the stairs can actually be quite beneficial since it works similar like exzentric load training. I have good experience with running uphill but don’t do it if it is in an acute state.

@@SebastianKienleTriathlete Thank you so much for your kind answer Sebi. At the moment my achilles are quite fine ('in the last few years i suffered an insertional tendonitis and a 'classic' mid portion tendonitiss) but i have to admit that i'm scared to get injured again...so i' usually avoid running uphill or trails run (that i love) if there are steep climbs. I think i will try something more now...

  • @SebastianKienleTriathlete

I suggest to try stairs that are in a good condition and uphill on the treadmill first. Trails are not necessarily bad, the achilles „likes“ force, just not from the side, so stabilizing and running uphill might be too much. And I would be more careful running down on a trail than up.
