Just a stupid experiment I did with a tube from an old CFL, a starter from a burned out PL bulb, and an F8T5 fluorescent ballast.
Жүктеу.....

Why did I never think of that? I've done it the other way round though, running a normal straight fluorescent tube of a CFL ballast!

But you have to make sure that the tube is connected at all times, or you will trigger the ballast's EOL protection and cause it to self-destruct.

Nice! I wish more CFLs were preheat ballasted, and not (the crappy) electronic ones.

Those last way longer than electronic one, one can last up to 50 years

@@GERALD_786LOL no. Spiral CFLs WERE preheat in the early 2000s. I believe I had a GE one. And they only lasted a few years of regular use. Probably bad caps, so they still suffer all the electronic problems. They lasted WAY longer than LEDs, like any decent CFL, but not long term at all. Meanwhile, I still have a Walmart CFL that has been weathered for probably 12-13 years and it still works. Newer CFLs are not instant on, they have an electronic ballast that sort of "pops" them on minimally and they warm themselves up mostly within a minute and the rest within a few minutes. And these bulbs are lasting longer than preheat and nearly instantly give a minimal amount of light. A great compromise to a now outcasted technology.

P for plugin or P for preheat? I might add a GX23 base to it so it will work in PL fixtures, and then it would be a true plugin CFL.

The ONLY ( best ? ) use for CFL's is their SUPER EFFICIENT black light units ... Even with modern LED technology these guys just beat it ..( I have one , it's amazing ) .... DAVE™🛑

Since this works, I'd like to know what ballast I could experiment with my dead 6500k 13w Feit CFL?

Probably a 15w or 13w one would possibly work. Most CFLs that I tried this with had issues starting on preheat, and would usually not start. But when I tried the same CFL tubes on an F32T8 electronic ballast, they worked perfectly. Must be a gas mixture thing then, so know it might not work.

You are correct, Mike Oxlong. It has the ballast, and the tube all built into one.
