Running 42.195km on my 42.195th birthday

Marathon my Age: My decimal age on March 2nd, 2022 was 42.195, which by no coincidence is also the length of a marathon in kilometres. To celebrate being alive, based on the actions of two people almost 43 years ago, I decided to run the famous distance around my district, retracing my history via schools, homes, memories and odd experiences that have shaped me, mum and dad over this marathon-chunk of time.

This video is the definition of "It's not about the destination, its the journey that gets you there." The bloke sets out with the goal of running a set distance for his decimal birthday, but it ends up being a nostalgia trip (which as an outsider was so wholesome to see by the way.) and in the end he went over the bloody number anyway!

just ran my first marathon in Brighton, UK. I still can't decide if I hated it or loved it, time went so quick, yet i was in an awful place at about mile 18-22, completely cramped up both my legs and couldn't run at all. Got overtaken by a person dressed as a minion. I thought of you during that period, you've always inspired me to a be a better person. Your mindset on life is so pure, it helped me channel whatever pain I had into a positive. I didn't stop going forward, I just couldn't run without more damage being caused. But I kept going forward. I thought 'What can I do if I can't jog for 1000 meters' as I hit the final straight. I hadn't even ran more than a half marathon before. But I crossed that line running and smiling, thanks to you Beau!

I am letting you do the running for me as well. My big plan pre - retirement was to walk across Canada hop on a ship go to someplace, walk across that etc. etc. until I eventually made it home. By the time retirement arrived arthritis had stolen that dream. There are days now where the distance from bed to bathroom seems like an Everest attempt. So new plan, I have for the last few years been warming a chair and playing guitar for several hours every day. I actually do still dream about walking some nights. I have also become much more of a musician than I had ever hoped to be. Cheers from the left edge of Canada. ~ulrich

One of my favourite things about Beau and his relationship with running is that he simply ENJOYS running, running for the sake of it, he absolutely loves it and relishes in it. So many runners get so caught up in trying to "improve" as a runner. In a bid for faster splits, lower pace and performance, they forget to actually just have fun being fit and able. An 8 hour run wasn't "gruelling" (fuelled by bear and a quarter of it carrying a small tree mind you), it was simply fun. He almost sounded disappointed that the fun was over once he was done, like he didn't want the playtime to end. So great to see mate

Haven’t ran for over 40 years because one person didn’t understand the concept of “touch football”, but I’ve walked that distance several times. Even got my wife to do it too. Shouldn’t you be running your age in MILES?

Hey Beau, noticed you wear Altras. Seems like most people who run these long distances wear Altras. Which specific models have you found work best for you?

I just got my first pair of altras. Trying to get used to the zero drop. But the toe room is awesome.

@@timbrownblacksmithandknife5648 Nice. I am coming from barefoot style/zero drop shoes already. Looking for some cushion for extra long distances. Thanks for sharing your experience!
