Actually, back in the 70s, I saw Steve Kemp of the Tigers throw out Paul Molitor at 1st from LF. Steve Kemp took a line drive off the shoetops, and everyone else - Molitor included - waited to see if it'd be called a catch or a trap. Kemp just fired the ball to first. It was ruled a trap, and Molitor was out.

From what I can see, it's happened a few times. Kevin Elster did it with the Dodgers against the Angels in 2000. Paul Molitor also did it while playing for the Brewers against the Tigers in 1979. The only other time and the first time it happened was in 1950 when the A’s Elmer Valo did it against the White Sox.

Still the craziest outfield assists will always be Rick Ankiel throwing out Willy Taveras twice in the same game from center field at Coor’s Field and Bo Jackson’s assist from the warning track to home plate were the craziest outfield assists I’ve ever seen.

Ever since I was a child in the early 1960s, I've always thought when the announcers called out "🎉Base hit!" on a ball hit to the outfield but not caught before it hit the ground, they could be a bit premature. But except for some of those now-banned shift plays in recent years, I don't think I've ever seen someone thrown out at 1st on one. I do remember hearing one in a game on the radio once. It was a Phillies game in the mid-1990s, a weekend day game, and I believe it was against the Montreal Expos. Danny Jackson may have been on the mound for Philadelphia, and I think the Expos pitcher was the batter.

Other times I would just mess around to see how close I would’ve been if I took it seriously
