I started GM'ing in 1985. Back then it was AD&D, but after that I was introduced to Call of Cthulhu and the BRP system and have more or less never looked back. RQ is one of my favorite games after Pendragon and Stormbringer. Thanks for a good review!

Runequest and D&D aren't even comparable. Completely different games. You could easily use both systems for different styles of play.

RQ player since 1988. It's an amazing game! PROTIPS: 1) Don't let *anyone* double-team your PC if you can help it, no matter how *weak* they might be individually. That critical can come up at any time, you can only parry so many times, and the more foes there are on you, the greater their chance of getting one in on you. Naturally, you should double-team them whenever possible. 2) Deploy your magic effectively before the cutting starts. Going into battle in RQ without spiritual cover is like fighting a mechanized battle without air cover. And never take an enemy Shaman for granted- kill/drive them away *first*, if at all possible. That spirit popping up in front of you when you're trying to fight someone in the mundane world can really ruin your day. By the same token- got a bound spirit at your disposal? Send that sucker out to harass your opponents! Nothing ends the fight quite like having a possessed enemy walk off a cliff, stab themselves, or even attack their own friends... 3) If you manage to get range on your opponents, make sure to pelt them mercilessly with every missile weapon you have. Unlike with many other TTPRGS, in RQ missile fire is deadly effective against even tough opponents. If they don't have any way to respond as they move up on you, even better! 4) Javelins are an awesome weapon. They might not have the range of a bow, but they pack a serious punch. Especially if you get lucky and make that Abdomen, Chest, or Head hit! And if they get the drop on you, it can still be used in melee as a 1H Spear.

Rolemaster GM here but started with Stormbringer which is very similar to RQ. I now have RQ 3rd Ed. I am prepping to run a on-shot later this year using Griffin Mountain wilderness campaign. This video was very useful for an overview of combat. The one-shot might very well snowball into a full RQ campaign. Lets see how it goes with my playgroup. I think theyll love it, I 've jumped between D&D (player and DM) and Rolemaster since mid-80's. Feels like the perfect time to add RQ to the table!

I am another person who played Rune Quest in the 80's. It is a shock to a lot of people this was my first RPG, not DnD. I love this game and its setting and still have the first box set I got back then and it still reminds me of so many stories I played or ran.

It's kind of sad when you think about it: the grim wars of the 20th century got us to the point where we need explanation, that no being with a free will fights until death.

For crushing damage if your character has a heavy mace (1D8+2 damage) and has a damage modifier of +1D4, in case of crushing special damage, you would deal 1D8+2 damage +1D4 (STR+SIZ modifier) + 4 (max STR+SIZ) modifier. Not very impressive since the damage modifier is not very high but, picture a Troll with a +2D6 Strength + Size modifier, he would deal 1D8+2+2D6+12. Crushing damage is very efficient for strong creatures.

Forever GM here The main reason I'm migrating my party to RuneQuest is because D&D combat bores me to death, especially in 5e. Never feels like there's any risk or reward in combat and it's nearly impossible to die unless your GM is an idiot and forces you into encounters you can't handle, or you just do something really stupid and get yourself killed. That and shields just giving you an "armor bonus" always annoyed the hell out of me There's a reason that the sweet spot is level 7-13 in D&D... that's the only time combat actually feels interesting Sorry for the rant, also I love the video

Not to pull you away from RQG, but just for a little history / alternate suggestion, RuneQuest: Roleplaying in Glorantha is basically RuneQuest 2e modified a bit, because of some weird licensing problems. Meanwhile, Runequest 6e was made by a company called The Design Mechanism, and they've now turned it into a more setting-agnostic game called Mythras, which also includes a supplement called "Classic Fantasy" which really makes it D&D with RQ combat. TL;DR, if you really like Runequest combat but don't always want Glorantha, consider Mythras. I think it makes the complexity slightly more manageable without getting rid of what makes it awesome.

@@bud389 Sort of? This version of RuneQuest is EXTREMELY stuck in with it, far more so than older editions. It can't help but infuse the lore of Glorantha onto every page to the point where it feels like part of the rules themselves. (Plus I just think Mythras is laid out better, but if you want Glorantha, WOW is this the game for it.)

Hiya! :) Been playing RPG's since 1980, yeah. Tried Runequest in/around '83, but only a handful of 'sessions' by some guy who introduced me and my D&D group to it. I eventually bought/got (maybe it was a friends who gave it to me...yeah... probably that now that I think of it), the "Runequest Deluxe" boxed set that year, near Christmas. .. We attempted to play it a handful of times, none really "stuck" with us though; we were loving our B/X D&D, 1e AD&D, Star Frontiers, Gamma World, etc. But I have kept up with it to some degree. Picked up several versions along the way (even acquired an original 1e RQ Hardback, another gift from a different friend). I've always wanted to give it a "serious go" (re: multiple month, 1/week shakedown). .. At any rate, thanks for the info. Pretty much lines up with what I remember...more or less. :)

I've played RQ since 2nd Edition in the early 80's. Try out Mythras, an RQ offshoot that I think represents a real legacy of RQ style rules.

@@LogicianTim I think Mythras does combat better than RQ. I think RQ missed a tChaosium missed a trick when it released RQRP in Glorantha when it did not align Call of Cthulhu and Runequest.

Want to strike first? Get a spear. Want to, uuuh, NOT FUCKING DIE? Get armor. And a shield. You can parry stuff with a spear (or most other weapons), but you do not want them to suddenly break on you, plus you ain't gonna parry arrows.

So whit these rules, its never wice to move towards enemy in combat, because you use srike ranks by moving and because of that you are propably allways going to hit whit your weapon last becsuse moving takes you up in strike ranks, than your opponent you run to?

Began GMing RQ2 in 1981. Worked at it fanatically for ten years. Finally gave up. Broken combat system -- too deadly, too slow, not fun. Pendragon Pass is the way to go, in my opinion.
