There's an easy fix you can borrow from WFRP: instead of adding an extra roll for a hit location, just reverse the to hit roll to see where you hit...so a roll of 35 is a 53.

Heh. That story about the Stone Woman turning out to be related to...Ernalda, I'm guessing? Maybe Asrelia? ...is priceless. And very typical of the way the lesser deities in Glorantha are always on the lookout for new worshippers, even when it's mostly a pragmatic thing rather than great devotion. Most characters wind up being lay members of multiple cults over time, and maybe even initiates to closely allied ones. Really makes the mythic side of the background come alive.

Small but cool tip: You do not need a second roll to determine hit location if you just take your hit roll and reverse the dice order. Example: roll 1D100 - got a 19 (so I hit) - hit location is 91 (something like left leg or foot)

  • @richmcgee434

    @richmcgee434

    4 жыл бұрын

That will significantly change what body parts are getting hit frequently. Take your example reversed - few PCs hit on a 91, so whatever a 19 hit location is will almost never get tagged. Not saying you can't do it, but be aware that it plays merry hell with the odds of head hits, in particular.

Game sounds interesting, must admit I haven't heard much - if anything - about it before. So thanks for the introduction. Another note for you, Seth: We finally made it through the "oneshot" for Cthulhu Incivtus (took us three sessions of three hours each on average, problem with having very busy players). The players all had a little familiarity with CoC in general but little experience with the setting. However, that ended up being the strongest selling point for everyone. Roman era just hit home and we had a lot of fun with that, like finding fun traditions, encountering huge cultural disparities, learning that things alien to us might not be alien to romans (and vice versa) and hitting one's head on the fact that some things we take for granted today did not exist back then (specifically passenger ships, that was a bit of a speed bump for my players). I will run the same module again next Saturday, hope the other group likes it as well. One of the players was really sad that this was adapted in a game that was so inherently lethal because he was wishing for a long campaign with a set party afterwards. Matter of fact, noone died or went insane, the players were so careful (and a good bit of lucky with the dice as well) that nothing really happened to them. :) Stay healthy, everyone.

I owned the 3rd-edition game which was actually published by Avalon Hill in collaboration with Chaosium, and seemed to give a richer (or at least different) production value. There were 3 types of magic, each practitioner recognizing the reality and power of the other two but faintly dissing them as well: Spirit magic (shamans communing with spirits), Divine magic (clerics, almost sure to succeed but they must ask for spells from their gods correctly) and Sorcery (magic-user spells, slowly built up in skill but each spell is scalable to increase duration, range and power to fabulous levels). Spells might have a low chance to work if cast on the fly, but your chances could improve if you had the time for rituals to accumulate and properly store spell power. The game box had five booklets and offered a Glorantha setting summary but also notes on a fantasy Europe setting.

Fun fact; in the 1980's RuneQuest inspired the emerging Swedish roleplaying scene and a company made two games using BRP. Drakar och Demoner (Dragons and Demons, I know, totes original) which started as your stock fantasy game and then evolved into its own developed setting, and Mutant, a post apocalyptic game. Both games are still going strong, and it was only in 2014 that one of the games started using a different system. And Swedish DoD kept the duck people. Speaking of which, I would absolutely love to see you try out Mutant: Year Zero.

I'd love to hear more about what you thought about the system and how it worked. What exactly don't you like about the resistance table mechanic? Not streamlined enough? There's a lot about the adventure that I like (talking with Lannike's ghost, the sprul-pa, and the Stone Woman encounter), though I haven't run it. Regarding what you found disappointing: what about providing the PCs with the early option of going directly to the Greydogs to confront their leaders - only to find that a) Danakos was operating on his own initiative and had ticked off his elders, b) his band hadn't shown up, and c) then have an elder of some variety provide some very basic info about the hills that they suspect that Danakos went through and might be hiding in. Throw in a duel or fist fight with a couple of hothead young warriors trying to prove themselves; a little light action that gets stopped before it goes too far and provides a little more insight into life in Glorantha, at least among the Sartarites. Then the PCs can continue on while now acting on behalf of both clans to find and reign in Danakos (though this set-up would probably mean missing the Cathalo and Lannike scene.) Another possibility for injecting a quick early combat (and very close to what you suggested): tie the rock lizards in with discovering Lannike's corpse, i.e. the PCs find them beginning to feed on her (hopefully providing the PCs with extra incentive to spring into action, etc.) As for future quickstart adventures, supposedly Chaosium's coming out with a Runequest Starter Set before 2020 is out.

I think the design intent of the latest edition of RuneQuest was to make it as compatible as possible with the classic 2nd edition of the game. As such, there wasn’t a desire to include rules from Call of Cthulhu 7E. The games' respective settings are almost opposite in terms of theme and mythology, so they’d never really be used for crossover material and are each their own thing.

  • @richmcgee434

Prior to CoC 7th I have absolutely borrowed monsters from both games for crossover work in the past and had it work fine. Gorp and giant insects are dandy CoC critters, and Chaos justifies weirder things than servitors of the Outer Gods or flame vampires, and that's just to name a few. Wouldn't want to have Cthuhu dig himself out from under the Block or a Malia cult show up in Arkham, but there's enough things not tied to their home setting to be useful.

Strictly speaking BRP is based on RuneQuest rather than the other way around. The first BRP (by that name, anyway) was found in the Worlds of Wonder boxed set (1982), which introduced the use of that engine as a generic engine. And this game is directly aimed at existing RQ fans (the price point isn't really conducive to new tire kickers). The original version was a direct response to the perceived silliness of D&D and found its market first among people who felt the same way. "Armor doesn't make you harder to hit, it makes you harder to hurt!" I have many problems with this edition, mostly with the technical writing side. For the age of the system, there's really no reason that basic elements of the game system couldn't be better explained. The character creation system is very hard to follow, even for experienced RQ players. Rules are arbitrarily placed, so even where the rules are unambiguous once found, it's very hard to find them when you need them. And the index is a travesty; possibly the worst I've ever seen in any game that made any attempt at an index. But I love it anyway. As to the adventure, I mostly agree that it could use a bit more action, especially early on. But I think it's important to remember just how randomly lethal the system can be; a special hit to the wrong location can kill a character with a single hit. FWIW, as a player, it didn't feel especially railroady to me, particularly for a first adventure in a new system. It did a pretty decent job of giving examples of many of the basic mechanisms and demonstrations of how the clan-based society works. I think the adventure is pretty strong for what it is. (I wouldn't feel the same if it were used midway through an extended campaign.)

It wasn't terrific and maybe some of my fond memories are coming from that one "robot safari" adventure Space Gamer did for FW, but Chaosium's lack of a generic scifi RPG always felt like they;d missed an opportunity. Might be true of the quickstart, but I've been playing the system/setting since 1979 and you couldn't be more wrong about the system in general. You can do anything you want, and I had a plasma blaster in a game (gained by magic from another dimension) after about 1 year of GMing it. Any system with a lot of background material can be one where you try to play it close to the lore or vary from it. Having a lot of lore doesn't mean you have to follow it. I also recall one of the early adventures, Apple Lane, and comparing how different GMs played it out... plenty of variety. In any case, the system is by Steve Perrin, and has been adapted for many, many RPGs, including Seth's beloved Call of Cthulhu.

@@konberner170 You misunderstand me. I'm not talking about the system, I love the system, it's my FAVOURITE system - it's apotheosis for me being Mythras by the Design Mechanism (check out the amazing Lyonesse game that was just released...) It's the published material and style of play that I'm talking about. And regardless of 'witnessing' big Gloranthan events (which feels like tourism not gripping play), I don't want to play games where it all boils down to your character's obligations to his tribe. And if another campaign involves f***ing cows.... I want to - and do - play 'gritty Glorantha' in the Griselda stories style. Hopefully Robin D Laws upcoming epic Pavis and Rubble book will lean more heavily into that style of play: gritty, loose and player-centric . I have the full editions of CoC and Runequest and I experienced the same confusion with the rules. I would have also really preferred that Chaosium maintained CoC's rule styles. Beyond that, Runequest is fantastic. My favorite aspect is the ability to put players into wild scenarios involving petty god squabbles similar to those we find in real world mythology.

I think the error is on Call of Cthulhu for making serious changes rather than RuneQuest for not changing so much. Sticking an Advantage dice/Disadvantage dice mechanism in a modern edition of D&D or CoC abdicates responsibility for thinking about which tactical combat choices improve the roll by a little and which improve it by a lot. A table of Combat Modifiers like in earlier editions of RuneQuest makes more sense for the gritty, manual combat of a fantasy or bronze-age game. More to learn, but quit bellyaching and LEARN it!

Runequest is one of the games I picked up in the 80’s. My group played a seven year campaign starting in Prax as River voices Intiates of a river god. It is a crunchy game that I will probably run in a year or so. Chaosium makes some fun games.

Camera was a christmas present to myself. Much better than the crappy phone camera I'd been using. I'm about 38% competent with it. Bud's was one he wrote himself, so nothing to review. I just got to play and have fun, which was pretty cool. Masks... dunno. I mean it'd be kinda weird to only review the first chapter of a campaign, so I'll just have to hold off on that until the day (if) my group and I ever run the full campaign. That's a big if, as we have a lot of other stuff we're enjoying playing at the moment.

Love rune quest. This was my second role play game I bought in the very early 1980s after traveller. I have most versions but the latest is a beautiful system for telling a story with characters guided by their gods and passions. It is clear the system has taken alot of ideas from greg Stafford masterpiece Pendragon and helped realise Greg's long time wish to portray a bronze age world. I think Seth would simply love the the full rule book which is one of the most beautiful role books I have ever bought.

Passions are cool. Being able to draw extra bonuses, with the caveat that the GM might make you roll vs your passion if they think you are going against it. Stops them being free and easy "Feats". In Mythras "Classic Fantasy" (Basically the Runequest clones version of an AD&D clone... it's complicated... ) Alignments are Passions, so your alignment can actually have a mechanical impact on the game while one character may literally be "More :Lawful Good" than another...

I learned about Runequest through a game called "King of Dragon Pass". I absolutely loved the world in that game. It is very mysterious and it truly feels mystical, while also having enough humour not to take itself too seriously. I especially love how the games are the type who just "do stuff". Stuff like "steal the sky", "Lift the ocean", "forge something out of abstract stuff". Don't know how good of a representation that game is to the canonical setting, but it did make me very interested in this game

I really want to run a bronze-age style of game, just like your friend. However, I think I also know why he never followed through. I got the quick start rules for Runequest and did my best to parse them, but I just wasn't getting it. Worth noting, I haven't run or gotten to play a Call of Cthulhu game. However, I have 7th edition, along with some of the published adventures and am just aching to get a game going (got stuff already in the works with my group, so I have to wait for an opening). But after reading it (and playing through the solo adventure) I _get_ CofC 7E. I'm sure if I get around to finally running it I'll discover a lot of stuff I don't understand as well as I currently think I do, but I feel confident that I could find the answers and make it through. I do not feel the same about RQ. So, yeah, the quick start didn't help me any. But I've had some quick start guides before that weren't that great. So I bit the bullet and bought the core book. Granted, I knew I wasn't going to get a chance to run this anytime soon, but bronze-age is something I've wanted to do, and do well, for many years now, so it wasn't such a crazy thing to get it now and familiarize myself with it way, way ahead of time. So I read the core book. And I still don't get it. Not the way I usually can grok a system, more or less, on the first pass. I'll have a general idea of how it works, know the bits I need to dig into more on future passes, but all in all I'll have an idea of what it "looks like" as a system. I had to read Scum And Villainy (FitD) all the way through twice and take notes, but it did click like 70% on the first pass. I just don't have that with Runequest. I'm thinking that at some point here I'll take another pass through the core book. One thing I would _want_ to do, as brough up by Seth, is adjust the attribute/ability ratings to be inline with CofC 7E as well as include the higher difficulties for skills because it really is a more elegant way of handling it. And the bonus dice mechanic is pretty much all over now (under various terminology) so it is odd that it was left out of RQ. But before tinkering, I just need to get a grasp on the core. ... The depth of character creation is superb, though, I genuinely like that even if it is rather involved. And the narrative setting hits a superb tone, as well.

Never played Runequest, but always wanted to. I played Call of Cthulhu and the Conan RPG from Chaosium back in the day and enjoyed the more active combat system than D&D. I guess the difference could be compared to tab targeting vs action combat in modern MMORPGs.
