Run Through & Uncoupled Training Programs in the UK | Residency & Fellowship in UK | Research & OOP

In this next lesson in our RoadToUK Academy course on post graduate training pathway in the UK, Dr. Ibreez Ajaz (Internal Medicine Trainee) breaks down what it means to enter specialty training in the UK, and what terms such as 'run through', 'coupled', and 'uncoupled' mean when it comes to training. Within that, she talks about how different specialties (like pediatrics, internal medicine, cardiology, etc) can have either a run through or uncoupled pathway.
She also explains what residency and fellowship mean in the UK specialty training pathway, and how you can consider pursuing out of program opportunities for clinical training, research, clinical experience, etc.

    Hello I have a question please for histopathology being a run through program, after finishing the core training meaning ST1 and ST2 in this field from what I've read, I can choose to either stay in the UK and see if any opportunities for ST3/4 are available or I can continue my subspecialty elsewhere? Thank you:)

    if i choose for the uncoupled option, then do I need to apply for a new job every year to get into subsequent CT levels? I'm asking this because on the NHS job site when I search for a CT 1 job in general medicine, it says that the job is available for a fixed term of 1 year. So do I need to apply 3 times for a core training job to reach the CT-3 level and complete my core medical training. Kindly clarify my doubt.

    Thanks for the video! Here in Brazil ENT is a 3 year run-through speciality. If I decide to move to UK, will I start as a ST3 or in a non-training post? Do I need to be recruted as a doctor who just finished the Core Training? Thanks a lot!

    If you aren't over qualified for core training (more than 18 months experience in a surgical rotation outside of internship), you can apply for it. In order to apply for ST3, you'll need MRCS and the alternative competencies signed off, which can be done via a non training job, and you'd also get an idea of the UK system. Wow great video Dr. Ibreez 🙂 im wondering what happens if i dont get into cardiothoracic specialty for example, some people say i get stuck, but cant i train in Core training for an extra year or even two, until my chances of landing a place increase with hogher experience? 😊

  • @RoadToUK

    You'd be able to enter CST if you weren't overqualified, but aside from that, you could look for non training jobs.

    Hello Dr. Ibreez, thank you so much for making these helpful videos. I have a question, I am interested in internal medicine training also. After 3 yrs of imt can we take a few months break like 3-4 months break? And start our desired fellowship like cardiology, neurology, hematology etc after the few months break?

  • @RoadToUK

    @RoadToUK

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes you can, but that break would have to be in some form of employment if you want to stay in the UK. The only way around that would be if you have indefinite leave to remain (ILR). You can obtain that after 5 years in the UK.

    To enter into ST3, you'd need the alternative certificate of competencies signed to show that you have ST1 & ST2 level competencies. In order to achieve that, you'll have to work in the UK in a non training capacity for some time first.
