Run8's biggest advantage is multiplayer and the communities that have formed around it. Highball, the Depot, etc. are what keep me coming back. Being able to hop in a busy server with 20+ people working trains across hundreds of of railroad is the greatest achievement by any "train sim" to date

i m playing this game since v1 for 13 years. it has a lot of potential. actually this game has HUGE potential. If the developers manage to create some great graphics along the game and the option to do some tasks it will be the best one on the market.

I don't think they want to be the "best train game" on the market .. and all the torture that goes with it. They, rightly, don't want their simulated multiplayer world full of crazy Steam types looking to ruin other's online experience for a laugh. They set the bar just high enough to keep the train game casuals at bay. First sign? No refunds .. PERIOD.

I've never heard of this game, it looks alright.

For a realistic railroad simulator it's the only game in town. It's definitely a niche thing though

Run 8 doesn't have any tutorials or hold your hand at all. It's a big sandbox simulator and it's up to you to run your railroad how you see fit. There is a lot of documentation provided and that helped with the basics. I also searched KZread for how-to videos and learned a lot from others

They make a great sim but their website is less than ideal. You also have to buy one thing at a time which is a bit of a pain if you want say 2-3 of the $10 skin packs. One of my good friends gave me a copy of the Run8 game files so i could play, but whenever i start it, it always closes out when it says “Indy files” or something like that. His other friends did not have the problem though. It couldve been my computer. I dont know

If you don't register v3 you might hear an occasional pirate sound in the background. Not sure why but if I had to guess ... I think they would prefer that you paid for it.

I think I'm about ready to give Run8 a shot. I've been playing TSW and finding that I want a more realistic, sim experience, and don't really need all the gamey stuff along the way. I'm curious what the flow is in Run8 though. If you're not doing "missions" then do you just spawn at any given yard of your choice, find an engine and hunt for some cars? Or do you build your own train in another menu/editor and get goin?

Run 8 is a sandbox simulator so it's up to you to create the gameplay. You can load in an empty world and spawn whatever loco/cars you want or load the default Busy Barstow world which has yards and industries populated and start from there. Some nice folks have also provided worlds preconfigured on community sites such as The Depot Server forums. I highly recommend that site. There is a ton of free info there and great forums www.thedepotserver.com/ When I was looking into Run 8 I watched a lot of videos to get an idea of what was going on. The learning curve is steep and there's a lot of documentation that comes with the game to wade through. Here are some videos to give you an idea of what the game is all about. Unfortunately not. Run 8 is a closed game other than adding horn sounds. They have made a very realistic simulation and it's not made to be changed. There are ways to reskin things but it involves editing the game files and from what I understand is frowned on by the developers

Been playing Trainz since TS12 up to TRS19, that game is getting frustrating. Have been looking at Run 8 which seems to be more what I'm interested in - driving trains. Just wondering how steep of a learning curve would I be facing coming from Trainz to Run 8? Thanks for any/all replies. Cheers Bruce

I've not played Trainz so don't know much about it. The thing with Run 8 is it is a big simulation sandbox. It doesn't hold your hand or tell you what to do. The base game is a couple hundred miles of railroad at true to life scale and it's up to you to make it come alive. You have to make your own gameplay if that makes sense. There are also multiplayer communities that run servers if that's your thing. The learning curve is quite steep but there's plenty of help out there. I would recommend checking out The Depot. That's a big bummer. The dev team is terrible at communicating with the community, it's really my only complaint. V3 has some nice updates and I really like having Otto the automatic dispatcher. It's not, check the description for a link to their website. I only have the base game which is over 200 miles of route but they have a lot of other routes if you want to expand. The rolling stock and locomotive packs are just extra skins. All locos and cars are included but some will have a generic run 8 livery

Cool game

The game looks great and all (Gameplay wise) but I don’t wanna drive freight almost all day, it gets boring quick. I know they have one route that includes a Amtrak loco for commuter services but I want more passenger based routes for this game. It’ll be so much bigger if it had just that in my opinion cause I know many others want the same.

Yes, the graphics are dated. It's also a railroad simulator without peer. Graphics are not the focus. What you get instead is great physics, full air brake modeling, hundreds of miles of track, multi-player, dispatching, working industries, and more. All with thousands of rail units in the world. I've gotten hours and hours of entertainment from Run8 and had fun playing it with my friends. It's basically one guy developing the game, I'm almost surprised it's not more than $50. It's as cheap as a night out on the town with the Mrs and this lasts far longer lol. Each to their own I guess.

@@therealsnow I am sure there are plenty of people who will enjoy it greatly! :) Regarding the 1 developer "argument". I don't get how that would justify a higher price? If anything it would justify a lower price since he doesn't have to split the revenue with anyone at all! It is a big achievement to do all that on your own but it also means development will be slower compared to a bigger team, which in my opinion is an argument for a cheaper price. If you add up all the DLCs, the total price tag is pretty hefty, so I don't think asking for a way cheaper base game package is that weird. I am happy for anyone who enjoys the game, I am not commenting to ruin the fun for others or keep them from buying it! ;)

@@TheBod76 yeah I was on the fence about buying it for years. Being able to walk around and have multiple players all riding on the same locomotive is what sold it for me. You get a lot for the money imo, the base routes takes like 8 or 9 hours to drive a train from one end to the other. Most the DLC is just skins, you don't even need them unless the default Run8 paint schemes bother you.

I think all the payware actually harms railroad simulators in the end. Back when Microsoft Train Simulator (MSTS) was the king of train simulations, every time there was talk about a new simulator coming along, the most common comment was that the new simulator had better have backwards compatibility with MSTS or they wouldn't buy it. I just wasn't willing to sink any significant amount of money into a buggy simulator, but there were people who invested thousands of dollars into payware routes and locomotives and scenery, and they refused to leave MSTS for any new simulator unless all their payware would port over to the new sim. I eventually abandoned MSTS for Railworks, because MSTS and Open Rails just looked so dated. Run8 also looks as dated as MSTS. I want eye candy scenery _and_ good physics. I think Run8 has the same basic problem of too many people investing too much into payware, and they will stunt Run8's graphics potential because of the demand for backwards compatibility. I have been thinking about diving into Train Sim World, but I want a route editor and a little more emphasis on US freight rather than so many passenger train routes. It seems like for every freight route you get, you get 10 passenger routes. And enough with all the mountainous routes. How about some good Midwestern routes for a change, like Rock Island or C&NW or Illinois Central?

You cannot really compare this Simulator with Train Simulator, TSW, Open Rails, Trainz or ZUSI. Run 8 has very limeted content compared to these other Simulators. There arent any modding tools (like TSW) and you cannot build your own routes or import own train models. There are also no 3rd party addons like in other simulators. The whole game is mainly focussed on american freight trains. There are no electric trains or highspeed trains etc. Also there are only american routes, nothing from Europe or other parts of the world. No ICE, TGV or other famous high speed trains etc. Run 8 is only good for people that are interested in the trains and routes that are included in this game. I wouldent buy it, because its to limited for me (only american trains, no electric locos and high speed trains etc.)

@@KerboOnYT It does not even have electric or steam locomotives. I agree that the diesel locos and freight trains in Run 8 are better and more realistic than the same trains in other simulators. Its pretty much a standalone game with no modding or 3rd party content. At least the developers care about realisim and not like DTG just rebrand TSW 2 to TSW 3 to milk more money out of it.
