    Notice how Egais uses the footwork on each side step of the basic step of the Basic Movements. On his free foot each time a side step happens, the foot not stepping to side is on the inside edge of ball of the unweighted foot. with almost a dragging motion. This, in my opinion, allows for a good leg line and helps in the Cuban hip motion needed in this style (International) of rumba. This is what I had learned when I took a group lesson in International rumba quite some years ago.

    Note: On each step going back, be sure that you do not lean your back backward. Think ballet here - the hip to the head area are level even when you step back. You can help yourself by thinking about the "Castle walk" technique (after Irene Castle) when you walk back.

    The Alternative Basic will remind you, if you are a seasoned Latin dancer, of something out of the Compact Chasse in Cha-cha, but it is not a chasse, because even though it looks like a compact chasse action, there is no syncopated timing.

    Alternative Basic. Man starts with right foot to side - count 4, hip settle no steps - count 1, close left foot - count 2, transfer weight to right foot - count 3. Then repeat but start with left foot to side - count 4, hip settling no steps - count 1, close right foot - count 2, transfer weight to left foot - count 3. Lady’s steps are same, but she starts with left foot

    Thank you Egils. Curious about the man's lead w left foot, which is the way I learned to lead in the USA. But your other videos show you using your right foot as a lead step. Is that the international version, to lead w the right foot?

    Thanks Dean for your question. I usually teach international style dances. I think of Waltz as good example. Man starts with right foot forward when he does Natural Turn (Turn to Right). But when Man starts with left foot forward then he does Reverse Turn (Turn to Left). My experience says that Natural Turn is more easy for Beginners. Therefore usually I start with Natural Turn and only after Natural Turn is mastered we learn Reverse Turn. Hope it helps.

    arent you supposed to step on an even count forward, aka step forward(on 2) during basic?

  • @EgilsSmagris

    @EgilsSmagris

    5 жыл бұрын

    You are correct - in first part of Close Basic Man steps forward (Lady backward) on count 2. In second part of Closed Basic Man steps backward (Lady steps forward) on count 2. It is in our video here 04:13

    Marija, thanks for appreciating our videos! Our Rumba is so called international Rumba or Cuban Rumba. Square Rumba (American Rumba) is slightly different dance although music is same. Hope it helps! Egils

    Because we start with preparation step (41) and then continue with any figure on count 2.
