Rules Former Presidents Have To Follow

Ойын-сауық

When a President is in office, there are constant threats to their safety, so they must have the Secret Service around any time they go out in public. However, these threats don’t always subside when they leave office, so nearly all ex-Presidents continue to have a Secret Service detail for the rest of their lives.
This leads to many other rules that former commanders-in-chief have to follow, like not being able to drive a car or having their mail searched. There are plenty of things ex-Presidents have to do that aren’t related to security as well, so let’s take a look at some rules that former Presidents have to follow.

I used to work with a surgeon that belonged to Army/Navy golf course in Arlington. It just so happened that Obama was a member there, too. He’d golfed in a tee time either directly before or after Obama on a number of occasions. He said it was pretty unnerving having a Secret Service agent staring him down while he was trying to putt or hit a hard shot, but once on Father’s Day the surgeon was golfing immediately after Obama. The surgeon said that he said “Goodmorning Mr President.” to Obama and they struck up a fairly casual conversation. At the end Obama told my friends daughter to let him win that day because it was Father’s Day. Probably good advice because the surgeons daughter is now on a golf scholarship at a D1 school. I’ve also been in a restaurant in Florida when Jimmy Carter showed up. He about 4 Secret Service guys with him as far as I could tell. Wasn’t much of a concern. I was also in a formation during a military parade when we were casing the colors of the Berlin Brigade when I was in the Army. Much bigger deal. We had Clinton there whom was the sitting POTUS at the time, Helmut Kohl whom was the PM of Germany at the time, and Eberhardt Diepkin whom was the Mayor of Berlin at the time. Much higher security. We had to go through metal detectors about 4 hours before the ceremony began, and there were snipers on the roofs of many of the buildings in the area.

Around the 9:00 mark where they discuss presidents being able to opt out of lifetime secret service protection... that's an option that shouldn't be available. Reason being is that when a person becomes the president, they understand that everyone knows they're privy to countless confidential national security briefings. After they leave office, and opting out of lifetime secret service protection, they'd be an incredibly easy target for someone vying for that information, and if they're threatened with violence or even death if they don't provide the confidential information to those who've taken them, they'd likely release it which could immensely weaken the nation's security.

Great video. Giving up your privacy for the rest of your life is not something that's easy to do. It seems like the former POTUS' become accustomed to it and are even used to arguing with their spouse in front of the security detail. They spend 4 or 8 years in this environment and losing that protection may make them feel vulnerable. Plus, imagine being the first former POTUS to get into a road rage incident,? Lol. After a while it probably becomes normal and that feeling of security and not waiting in line or in traffic may make it all worth it.

I think that instead of letting former presidents opt out of getting secret service protection and hire their own private security, the government should offer more than one option for secret service detail. They can give the option of getting full protection, and then they can also give the option of getting partial/limited protection, where they let them do more things, and the president in question can choose what those things are. For example, I'd be fine with not driving a car ever again, but I'd hate never having any alone time, and I'm fine with agents snooping through all of my personal and private stuff, as long as they don't have any thoughts or questions about it, and are reading it for the sole purpose of securing my safety. Now, the can also still choose to not get any detail at all, but if you're like me, you'd probably opt to get the partial protection.

Richard Nixon at times drove a vehicle on public roads while he was president. I personally saw him driving a vehicle in Palo Alto, California after he was out of office. It was a big black Cadillac. There may have been Secret Service agents in the car, but he was at the wheel. Palo Alto is where Stanford University is located. Many possible reasons why he could have been there. The location was on Alma Street past San Antonio Road in the northbound direction. Drove right by him. He looked straight ahead.

Because those things aren’t really a big deal if it means being president of, arguably, the most powerful nation on Earth, making you the most powerful person on Earth. The huge amount of prestige that comes along with the job is a perk too. Not to mention the fact that becoming president was probably their life goal, so it would seem silly to no longer want that just because of the rules in place when you leave, especially because the rules imposed on you while still in office are probably way more restricting.
