    Your comment about sights reminded me of something funny my dad shared with me. He was drafted during WWII, had been a squirrel hunter all his life. During rifle training the guy next to my dad was consistently hitting bulls eyes on the first day at the range. The range instructor stopped and praised the guy. He said, "Gee sarge, its easy with this rifle, it's got some sights on it. It turned out his rifle at home didn't have any sights.

    I own a RUGER AMERICAN In 308 and really shooting this rifle. In 308 the recoil is really mild and can shoot it all day long with no problems. The action on this rifle is a dream and allows really fast follow up shots. I wish ruger would make more accessory's available for this rifle its a keeper.

    That's not even close to how powerful they are. Movies often have the misconception that metal and hard objects are bulletproof, but thick strengthened steel blocks will often look like they've been through a meat grinder after 3 shots from a .308

    Oh, my god, I'm heart-broken that you no longer have "respect" for me. :-) I'm crushed. You might want to avoid drinking and posting. No iron sights CAME with this rifle, which is why I thought I might just bow to the demand over the years and finally get a darn scope to have around, especially since I had to buy some sights and get them installed anyway before I could do a video with the rifle. The scope was easier. Why I actually answer a troll, I'll never know. :-)

    I am from austria and also a proud owner of this fine rifle, completed with a bipod and optics, and it´s a joy to shoot this gun. The only thing which annoys me is the not so fluid and very scratchy feeling when chambering a new bullet. Btw - it´s always a good idea to let the barrel free flowing with a bipod, and not leaning it towards a branch :P What´s also important to mention is the special trigger on this gun, which is also very nice in this price range. Nice to have this small integrated magazine, with one in the barrel, in sum 5 rounds to fire before reloading. Concern to the miss rate in the end of the vid - my experience with this rifle is, when the barrel gets hot, it can bend a little bit on one or the other side, and stops free floating, which changes the aiming/hitting behaviour. I alway check the barrel after a few shots with a piece of paper to see, if the barrel is still free floating or needs a cool down.

    I got one for Christmas in .243. This way I can leave my Mauser at home in it's wood stock beauty in 100% stock condition. Since this RAR has a plastic stock weather does not matter and nicks and scratches are not an issue.It is super light weight and while not ideal for bench shooting or nice tight groups it is perfect if you have to carry that thing all day. My Dad got mine on clearance at Walmart for $276 kind of hard to beat at price. When you look at the price, the size of the cylindrical bar stock action, the beefy bolt, the non-propitiatory non-built in scope bases, the magazine etc.....I think this might be the next Remington 700 in terms of low cost doner gun just for the action. It's bedding block design is simple and genius. Because it is a cylindrical bar stock action it will be just as easy to true up on a lathe as a Remington 700. I will admit I am not keen on the plastic in place of the bottom metal but truth be told it is prob. stronger then alloy bottom metal used on a lot of rifles.

    The rifle and scope combination are just about perfect for hunting anything in North America. Most would say you would be under-gunned for the great bears of the North but good shot placement with a quality bullet would do the job in a pinch. The Ruger American has turned out to be a terrific rifle and that leupold 3x9 with the European style reticle is a great scope. I was thinking the misses later in the video were not that far off but seemed to be moving around a little. If I was at the range and having that happening I would check to see if the scope bases had worked themselves loose. I have had that happen before. I live in New Mexico where the spaces are pretty wide open, so a good scope tuned in is imperative for hunting here. Anyway thanks for the video.

    My apologies if someone has already mentioned this in the 1800+ comments below -- that's a free-floated barrel. You should support the rifle on the forearm of the stock or your otherwise defeat the purpose of free-floating the barrel, which is to avoid introducing adverse qualities to the natural harmonics of the barrel.

    In my experience, the Ruger American .308 is an excellent inexpensive rifle. I consistently get half inch groups at around 100 yards using Remington Core-Lokt ammunition and a Vortex Crossfire 2 scope. The only complaint I have is that, after 20 shots or so, my shoulder becomes very sore and I wake up with bruising the next morning; and I'm considerably larger than most men. I'm not a hunter and will never shoot a bolt action rifle as much as my AR or GLOCK but I'm a big fan of quality in my firearms. I have a friend in Alabama who runs a hunting camp and if you have the money he supplies all his customers with model 70 Winchesters in 30.06 and a deer to take home as well as professional guides along with serving everyone breakfast, lunch, and dinner....basically a camp for real hunters and city folks like myself and after several phone conversations he stated for the price point and what I'm trying to accomplish you can't go wrong with the above mentioned Ruger as well as a decent scope for under 1000 dollars. This man has been doing this stuff for over 50 years and since I have no interest in shooting Elk or Black bear in North America I decided to go with the .308 as well....Great video!

    Never rest the barrel on your shooting platform. Especially if it's a free floating barrel like most rifles have. It throws off the vibrations and accuracy by a large margin the further out you're shooting.

    I can't say that Remington 700's have a problem. I have owned more than a dozen of them from .222 to .300 Mags and have NEVER had any of these rifles going off by themselves. I currently own a Remington 700 Classic in .30-06 and have killed several deer with it with No Problems what so ever.

  • @topherd1011

    Definitely not saying Remington can't make a great firearm. I'm sure they do. But that's a serious issue if there are a good many 700 series rifles going off without even touching it and if it only costs Remington 10 cents per rifle to fix, and they don't and they ignore it for years and years and years, which they did, while men women and children were being killed through their negligence and chase after the bottom line, then I think I can find other better options other than a 700 series.

    CDubs HasIt I love my Ruger American in 30-06 but in all fairness I saw where at least one of those Rem. 700's had the trigger modified by a non-gunsmith. Those little parts of the trigger mech. are probably shaved pretty good at the factory for weight. So someone comes along and shaves more off to the point that maybe the trigger becomes unsafe. There is a matter of close tolerances from the factory to keep in mind.

    I have 2 Ruger Americans. One is the Ranch in the 7.62x39 and the other is a Predator in the 22-250. All I can say about them is the fact that both are quite accurate. I consistently get 1 inch or less groups at 100 yds. I have had 2 issues. 1. The Ranch rifle uses the same magazine as the Mini-30. It's metal and the only time I ever shot foreign made ammo, they had a steel case and it was damn near impossible to eject the brass and load up the next round. Evidently the steel case and the steel magazine did not get along very well. With brass or coated case ammo, I have had no problems. 2. I ordered another magazine from Ruger for the American 22-250. It was worthless and didn't work well at all. I called Ruger and discussed my problem and they sent me the magazine referred to as the Ruger American multi-caliber magazine and it works fine.

    hickok45 You are a much better shot than I am, but I have no problem standing on my hind legs and hitting 250-475 yard targets. I would never rest a barrel directly against a tree. If you have to rest, use your hand to insulate the rifle from the rest. Also, a sling would help, especially with a free-floated barrel. I literally cringed when I saw you rest that barrel on that twig. I bet the Ruger rep did too. All that said, I truly enjoy all your videos.

  • @davew368

    @davew368

    +Mike “Desert Hunter” Hale Does it mess with accuracy if you rest just the fore end on a tree? I've done that for years on my little squirrel gun but it's not free floated. I did it with my mod 70 deer gun also...but its not free floated. I don't want to give that crutch up if I pop for a free floated deer rifle. Most of my shooting is with open sights so I don't have much experience with a real nice scoped gun.

  • @dobypilgrim4164

    @dobypilgrim4164

    8 жыл бұрын

    Rest your hand on the tree branch and the rifle on that. You will shoot even your squirrel rifle better. Never rest the barrel on anything whether free floated or not. You change the harmonics of the barrel and it will hit at a different POI. Thus accuracy is affected. Resting the forearrm on something hard is just not conducive to good accuracy either.

    Savage.... very accurate, best trigger... can't go wrong, period -- by the way you defeat the purpose of free floating a barrel by setting it on a branch, get a set of shooting sticks.... 4 or 5 times, then the barrel heats enough to change the poi....
