Rufus Wainwright marks his sixth studio album with All Days Are Nights: Songs For Lulu, to be released April 20th on the Decca Label Group.
The album was written and produced by Wainwright with two songs produced and one co-produced by Pierre Marchand, who also mixed the album. The two last collaborated on Rufus' Poses album.
The album is hugely personal, deeply emotional and all channeled through Rufus fingers, his voice and a piano. Rufus admits recording All Days Are Nights: Songs For Lulu was one of the most difficult things he has ever done. After hiding behind a 70-piece orchestra with my opera you can blame everything on the tuba player. With this album, when the curtain is raised its me on my own, says Rufus.
Strapped with a resounding emotional heft and steeped in beauty, the intense 12-track record opens in arresting fashion with Who Are You New York?, Rufus ode to the city. Les Feux dartifice tappellent, which is the final aria from Rufus debut opera, Prima Donna, is another highlight along with Zebulon, a majestic song about one of Rufus high school sweethearts.
Also featured are three Shakespeare sonnets which Rufus has gorgeously crafted in his very own inimitable style. They are selected from 24 pieces of music that Rufus wrote for a theatrical production, Sonette with director Robert Wilson in Berlin last year.
Set to be one of the highlights for 2010s musical calendar, Rufus Wainwright will recreate the intensity of All Days Are Nights: Songs For Lulu on an 11-date solo UK tour in April followed by European and North American legs. The shows will spotlight Rufus with just a piano and microphone, replicating the setup of his studio process.
"It's an opportunity to have this slight moment of intimacy with me, which I know everybody wants, laughs Rufus.

How is it that no one told me there was Rufus out in the world? Now I discover at an advanced age and must play catch-up. How is it I love Rufus so much? At least the young Rufus. My goodness.

My gosh I love this man. I discovered him my sophomore year of college and I just went crazy over his records for probably about 7 months--literally tried to listen to other things but couldn't. He is just SO good, and the kind of artist that isn't being born these days... I love indie rock and all of that so much, but this is just talent bolstered by hard work and building musical chops. Piano lessons! Gah, I love it.

Can tell hes is still dealing with the loss of his mom. We all know how loss changes us, and I think it has changed his music, and might in the future. Always wanted to just hear him and the piano on a album, and I got my wish. Great interview:)

Rufus don't worry, you're still stealing the eyes - and the breath - of men and women ! Everywhere you go and with everything you do you are still amazing souls! Shakespeare would have been proud of you - and probably a little in love with you too! I just adore your opera Prima Donna and now Lulu. Thank you so much for your solid perseverance and your uncompromising pursuit of Art!

It is very rare to find an artist who is not influenced by popular trends and the demands of the music industry's marketing machine. I truly believe he will go down in history as one of the all-time musical greats, such an amazing talent is a privelege to find and experience. My life is truly enriched by his brilliantly crafted writing and performances.

The emotion in this album is so intense, it's hard to even start to go into it. STOCKYARD magazine had the one review I've seen so far that was (almost) up to the task of writing about it... Mr. Wainwright has given us another beautiful piece of art.
