It’s a difficult one. In my view the crux of the debate here is ‘do intermediaries impartially facilitate the most financially efficient moves at the request of their clients, or do they unsettle relationships between players and clubs in order to facilitate moves for their own financial gain’. It’s likely a case of both being true. Clubs themselves are also guilty of holding onto ‘assets’ rather than living, breathing players that they’ve taken the time to develop. they might be useful in the future (financially or in terms of performance) so the club will say what they need to in order to keep the player, even if a move would be advantageous for their long-term development. Sometimes the final decision was the right one, sometimes not but it isn’t something anyone can predict with much certainty. I’m a Chelsea fan and personally have no problem with Rudiger’s move. I can understand the board not wanting to break the wage structure but can also understand a 29 year old defender’s desire to cash in on the big contract he had rightly earned. I also think intermediaries are useful in this situation because the most efficient outcome was achieved with their help - Rudiger went to the club which valued him most highly

It's a hypocritical attitude to blame agents for wanting to get the best deals for themselves and their players. What else did you expect? And who doesn't do exactly that in whatever field they are in? In an ideal world, agents would not exist but they are a symptom, not the sickness. And clubs have not been innocent in this and agents are at least partly a result of how clubs used to treat players.

well you dont resign players 4-5 months before their contract ends, they had years to resign him. if a club really wants a player the deal is offered before the final year of the contract starts. that way if a player does not want to sign and is delaying the decision the club can think about whether he is stalling them in order to get them to make a better offer or in order to go on a free and take a nice bonus on top. then the club decides whether to make a higher offer or sell him (like mane). so chelsea had a lot of opportunities to resign him during his time there. and 27 for a central defender is fantastic, contracts signed at that point cover the generally best part of defenders career, 27-32/33.

For everybody wondering, Saif is a professional middleman. An agent works with the player day to day on things he may need. An intermediary does the deal and nothing else. Rudiger and Paqueta for example, are not signed to Saif

@@MrDunkycraig yep. The idea that he "makes the deal happen" is just bizarre - either that or football clubs are run by utter idiots. If I want to but your car I'm happy for use to speak and see if we can agree a price. I don't need some guy running back and forward between us with the various offers, only so he can take a chunk of the money in the end.

@@MrDunkycraig as he said, he made West Ham aware that Paqueta was available and in budget. Essentially his job is to know who’s happy to relocate. What league they’d like to relocate for and the fees involved. If working for a player it’s to try and find clubs who’d be happy to add that individual. Most agents don’t need / use intermediaries however a lot of independent agencies do or agencies without strong links in a certain part of the world. For an example a Brazilian agent might need assistance in Europe

I liked this conversation. It was provocative but also well conducted. The truth can be provocative at times but it takes grace to handle and dole conversations.

Your not a person to call out names, but the first thing you did was called out Simon for something he said 4 months ago with the information he had at that time.... so what Saif basically said was that a player who's contract is running out at a club can demand the same amount of money they want from another club, that's just pure greed. Why should a club have to pay agents or intermediaries to resign a contract.

Why do clubs need to pay agents? What do you do when you purchased your biggest asset? Lets say you want to purchase a house, the biggest purchased for most of us, we need an intermediary an "agent" it'll be stupid to go into a deal of that caliber without a professional in your side agree? Then whats the difference between that and singing a deal with another club, one of the most important deals in your career and life, it'll be stupid to go in without a professional on your side. See? This is why they need to be in the game you can hate all youbwant but these are facts.
