Ruby Wax + Julia Samuel talk grief, mindfulness + mental breakdowns

In 2021 we welcomed the amazing Ruby Wax to Good Grief. From the Royal Shakespeare Company to primetime TV; from a master’s degree in mindfulness based cognitive therapy from Oxford University to best-selling author; from interviewing the president who shall not be named to delivering a ground-breaking TED Talk. And from a mental health campaigner to being awarded an OBE for services to mental health.
Ruby’s brought the same mold-breaking establishment-questioning and pioneering energy to everything she’s done.
She is also a Visiting Professor in the School of Mental Health Nursing at the University of Surrey as well as holding an Honorary Doctorate from the School of Psychology from The University of East London and University of Staffordshire. She has also been awarded a City Lit Lifetime Fellowship, and was recently appointed Chancellor of Southampton University.
In the field of mental health, Ruby’s brought support for mental health to a whole new audience discussing complex neurological theory in an accessible and often hilarious way but always with a serious point that we need to reframe the conversation and remove the stigma that mental health illness still carries. Ruby helps us understand how we can take control of our overstressed and over critical minds.
Ruby is the author of And Now for the Good News and A Mindfulness Guide for Survival, both available on our virtual bookshop: www.goodgrieffest.com/bookshop/
Ruby is in conversation with Good Grief stalwart Julia Samuel MBE, one of the UK’s leading psychotherapists, podcast host and author of the bestselling books This Too Shall Pass and Grief Works.

Most people don’t analyse feelings. Ruby is a star. Helping so many 🎉

Fantastic webinar. I only wish my friend discovered Ruby’s books. Alas, she ended her life in June. She had a wonderful crazy sense of humour but told me, she felt like she’d ‘fallen off life’s merry go round’. Keep up the good work.

Sorry for your loss ... and I agree there is healing in Ruby's work ... it would be great if everyone could be saved from despair, loneliness and hopelessness... we will keep lighting candles to spread light into any darkness...

So much I'm struck by. I'm an introvert that's developed useful extroverted qualities. I'm a very funny, successful high functioning anxiety riddled, contained mess, who feels misunderstood, because my authenticity is clouded by who I think others want me to be. You know, in a nutshell. Others think i've got it made. What I tell them is "the grass might look greener it still needs mowing" eeesh...ain't it a game huh?

20:05. Whenever you're in your body your cortisol levels go down. As😂 opposed to jumping out of your skin or being beside yourself et cetera.
